Taking advantage of NOAA-Marine Sanctuaries Condition
Reports and CONANP’s INDIMAPA to create a tool for
improving the management strategies of Network sites.
The working group will hold thematic meetings each year to
develop and perform MPA condition evaluations and other
beneficial projects identified by the Work Group.
12
First meeting in Veracruz in September-October
2017.
Objectives:
• Share the methodological frameworks of NOAA-
Sanctuaries (ecosystem evaluation) – INDIMAP
(management effectiveness).
• Combine methodologies to develop an integrated
evaluation protocol.
• Identify the first MPAs to evaluate.
The second workshop planned for January-February
2018 will carry out the evaluation of the first MPAs
selected with the adapted methodology.
The methodology will be replicated in additional
MPAs in years 3 and 4 of the Project.
13
Products:
• Report of ecosystem condition at MPA sites.
• Identify strengths and weaknesses of MPA conservation strategies.
• Propose appropriate MPA management actions based on these
results.
• Design a toolkit for long-term evaluation and improvement of MPA
ecosystem and management performance that can be applied to a tri-
national Mexico-US-Cuba MPA Network.
• Create a state-of-the art atlas showing the habitats and communities
represented and protected by the Network of MPAs in the Gulf of
Mexico.
• Establish a tri-national agreement between Mexico, US and Cuba to
formally recognize the Gulf of Mexico MPA Network.
