¿es cierto? Parece que sí. Justo bajo mi ventana hay tres tíos viejos con coronas suspendidos en el aire y, junto a ellos, hay otro tío con dos caras que está haciendo un ridículo espantoso. Pero son las luces de neón lo que me hacen caer en la cuenta; sí señor, de nuevo está aquí La Navidad para cerrar el año. En Relevant, nos gusta creer que es mejor dar que recibir y, con ese propósito, hemos creado una bolsa de suculentas golosinas para llenarte el calcetín. Estos regalos tan bien confeccionados los fabrican enanos desnutridos y los envuelven gnomos sin permiso de trabajo. No te voy a contar lo que te espera - al fin y al cabo, en Navidad es fundamental la intuición. Lo que sí puedo decir es que cuando metas esa mano inocente vas a encontrar cosas suculentas y tentadoras - y puede que hasta un poco asquerosas (como nuestra versión léxica de comer demasiado chocolate, por ejemplo; La Navidad no sería Navidad sin un poco de miseria ¿no?). Dicho esto, ponte las mallas rojas de leer y prepárate para una aventura mágica y reconfortante... Espera un segundo, estoy pensando en Disney. Bah, qué más da... ¡feliz año nuevo!

It’s all the neon lights that clinch it, though; yep, it’s the festive season again as yet another year draws to a close. Here at Relevant we like to think it’s better to give than to receive and to that end we have a great mixed bag of goodies to fill your stockings, all lovingly crafted by a sweatshop staffed with malnourished elves and wrapped up by gnomes in need of work permits. I’m not going to tell you what to expect - after all, Christmas is about the anticipation. What I can say is that wherever you dip your lucky fingers you’ll find something to delight or enthral, and maybe even sicken (our lexical version of eating too much chocolate, if you like; Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without some misery, would it?). That said, put on your red reading tights and prepare yourself for a magical, heart-warming journey... Wait a minute, I’m thinking of Disney. Ah bugger it... happy new year y’all!FR

the Congo and modern electronics el Congo y la electrónica moderna

El Congo se ha tambaleado de un conflicto al otro: los últimos enfrentamientos han atraído la atención sobre la enorme riqueza potencial del país; estos conflictos se suman a la primera y segunda guerra del Congo (la segunda de las cuales empezó en 1998 y ya ha matado a más de cinco millones de personas).

Puede que la harmonía social y política haya abandonado el Congo pero los intereses de países extranjeros quizás no. El Congo cuenta con la segunda reserva del mundo de cobalto, un elemento esencial para fabricar baterías de litio como las que se utilizan en los teléfonos móviles y demás aparatos electrónicos. También existe el “Coltan”, o Colombita-tantalita, cuyos extractos se utilizan en todo tipo de artilugios, desde ordenadores portátiles a frenos ABS.

El 64 por ciento del Coltan del mundo se fabrica en el Congo oriental, en concreto en las colinas de Mushangi, en la región de Kivu del Sur – una zona montañosa que marca la frontera con la vecina Ruanda.

La región de Kivu ha sido una zona muy agitada en la última década, ya que los minerales han proporcionado una fuente estable de riqueza a los distintos pretendientes de sus minas (de las cuales los últimos han sido el ejército rebelde de Laurente Nkunda. Hay sospechas bastante fundadas de que los beneficios de la venta del Coltan y de otros minerales se destinan directamente a financiar la guerra del ejército rebelde contra las facciones Hutus y las autoridades gubernamentales del Congo.

Las minas de Kivu son mayoritariamente de tajo abierto y la mayoría de sus empleados trabajan sin las medidas necesarias de precaución, ya que lo hacen con las manos desnudas para extraer los minerales que interesan. En el caso de la extracción de oro en la región de Kivu, el mercurio líquido se vende a los trabajadores para separarlo mejor de otras impurezas. El mercurio es altamente tóxico y muchos de los mineros más mayores ya han sufrido consecuencias físicas o neurológicas.

El Coltan se extrae de los laterales de las minas, normalmente incrustado en trozos más grandes de roca comprimida y tierra. Los trozos se inspeccionan y se descartan si no hay señales de las motas gris oscuro que se buscan. Cuando se encuentra, es el mismo minero el que lo extrae y lo almacena. Casi todos los trabajadores jóvenes desconocen el uso que se le dará a lo que recolectan. Una vez se haya recogido una modesta cantidad de esta sustancia, el minero llevará su botín a una oficina cercana y bien

custodiada. Aquí se inspecciona su Coltan, se pesa y se intercambia por una pequeña cantidad de dinero, aproximadamente diez dólares* por unos cientos de gramos, que un trabajador puede tardar días en acumular.

Cada semana el Coltan se recoge en bolsas más grandes y se prepara para el transporte. Las remesas se envían por avión en viajes extremadamente peligrosos hacia los pueblos cercanos. Las fuerzas de la oposición centran su presión en detener el tráfico de Coltan, lo que convierte el viaje en un enorme riesgo. Los pilotos pueden recibir hasta £1500* por un solo viaje. Una vez recibidas, las bolsas de Coltan se vuelven a inspeccionar y se compran a unas 50 libras esterlinas* por kilo antes de transportarlas a la refinería. Las refinerías locales pueden producir unas cinco toneladas al mes; una cifra respetable que, sin embargo, no logra saciar la demanda mundial ni por asomo. El Coltan es una sustancia milagrosa, ya que su capacidad para absorber calor ha supuesto un enorme recorte en el gasto del mercado de la electrónica, pues permite la utilización de unos materiales que, de no ser por este elemento, sobrecalentarían el producto y lo harían inservible.

Hay muchos inversores en el mercado del Coltan. Ruanda es el país que más beneficio obtiene, ya ha acumulado 250 millones de dólares* de beneficio en un año y medio, procedentes exclusivamente de la extracción de Coltan en el Congo, Uganda, Burundi; además, se sospecha que hay otros vecinos africanos involucrados. El interés extranjero incluye compañías de los estados Unidos, Alemania, China y Bélgica. El Coltan posteriormente se convierte en condensadores de capacidad y otros artilugios para venderlos posteriormente a fabricantes de electrónica como Nokia, Motorola, Compaq, Alcatel, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Lucen, Ericsson y Sony. Muchas de estas empresas fabrican directamente para empresas de telefonía móvil como O2, Orange o Vodafone. Por último, los distribuidores les compran sus productos para venderlos al público.

The Congo has reeled from a history of conflict, with the most recent clashes bringing attention to a country of massive potential wealth, coupled by the suffering of the first and second Congo wars (the second of which began in 1998 and has laid rest to over five million people).

Political and social harmony may have left the Congo, but foreign business interest has not. The Congo boasts the second largest deposits of Cobalt on earth, an essential component of the manufacturing of Lithium Ion Batteries, which are widely used in our mobile phones and personal electronic devices. Coupled with this is ‘Coltan’ or Columbite-tantalite, the extracts of which are used for everything from laptops to ABS brakes.

Sixty-four percent of the world’s ‘Coltan’ is produced in the eastern Congo, specifically the Mushangi Hills of the South Kivu region, a mountainous area hugging the border and Rwanda beyond.

The Kivu region has been an area of extreme turbulence over the past decade. Its minerals have provided a steady source of wealth for the various claimants of its mines, the most recent being the Rebel Army of Laurent Nkunda. It is strongly suspected that the proceeds from the sale of Coltan and other minerals are directly funding the Rebel Army’s war against Hutu factions and government authorities in the Congo.

The mines of Kivu are mostly open-pit, with young male workers operating without necessary precautions, bare handed, to extract the relevant minerals. In the case of gold in the Kivu region, liquid mercury is sold to workers in order to more hastily separate the gold from other impurities. Mercury is highly toxic and many of the older miners have suffered from severe physical and neurological problems.

Coltan is chipped from the sides of the mines, usually imbedded within larger clumps of compressed rock and earth. The chippings are then inspected and cast away if no signs of the familiar dark grey specks can be seen. If present, the raw Coltan is picked out and gathered by the miner. Almost all of the young workers are ignorant to the use of what they are collecting. Once a modest amount of the mineral has been collected, the miner will then take his cache to a closely guarded office nearby. Here his Coltan is inspected, weighed, and exchanged for a small sum, approximately ten dollars* for a few hundred grams. This can often take days to accumulate.

Each week the Coltan is gathered into larger bags and made ready for transport. If available, the consignment is flown on extremely dangerous journeys to nearby towns. Opposing forces focus pressure on stopping the Coltan trade, making the flight a huge risk. The pilots can receive up to £1500* for a single journey. Once received, the bags of Coltan are checked further, and bought for around £50* per kilo before being transported for refinement. Local refiners can produce around five tonnes per month, a healthy figure, but one that only scratches the demand of the world market. Coltan is a wonder substance. Its ability to absorb heat has shed huge costs for the electronics market, allowing them to use other materials which through overheating would render their products useless.

There are many investors in the Coltan market, Rwanda being the highest reaper of profit, accumulating $250* million in a year and a half directly from the exploitation of Coltan in The Congo. Uganda, Burundi, and other African neighbours are also suspected in involvement. Foreign interest includes companies from the United States, Germany, China, and Belgium. After purchase the Coltan is converted into capacitors and other devices to then be sold to electronics manufacturers such as Nokia, Motorola, Compaq, Alcatel, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Lucent, Ericsson and Sony. Many of these companies are manufacturing for the commission of mobile phone service providers such as O2, Vodafone, and Orange. Retailers then buy their products to be sold to the general public.

CHARLAMOS UN RATO POR TELÉFONO CON EL MISMÍSIMO PROTAGONISTA, COMPARTIENDO PENSAMIENTOS Y VISIONES...

A principios de los 90 tenías muchas influencias de la

escena Jungle. Cuéntanos un poco, ¿qué es lo que te

hizo meterte en esta aventura musical?

Supongo que fue una combinación de factores. La

música que escuchaba por aquel entonces - sobretodo

en emisoras de radio clandestinas - casi me lo impuso.

No fue para entrar en el negocio de forma comercial, sino

sencillamente venía de un sitio en el que disfrutaba tanto

de la música que me llevaba a lugares desconocidos. Creo

que ese fue el mayor catalizador para meterme en esto.

Por supuesto, no tenía ni idea de que acabaría haciendo

lo que hago, ¡pero supongo que eso nunca lo sabes! Vas

haciendo y de repente hay algo que conecta con la gente;

no es algo que dictes o controles tú mismo.

Una vez dijiste “Escribir música es como meditar” y

con títulos de canciones como “Lean Forward/Learn”

(Inclínate/Aprende), “Changes/Forgive” (Cambios/

Perdón) o “Living differently” (Viviendo de forma

distinta)... ¿estás queriendo transmitir algún mensaje

o pensamiento, o son nombres al azar?

Es difícil hablar de la música espiritual o de la difusión de

un mensaje porque, de alguna manera, creo que todos

queremos transmitir algo; quizás lo escuchemos y quizás

no, pero ese ya es otro tema. Cuando se trata de escribir

y ponerle nombre a una canción, yo me remito a lo que

significa para mí. Eso es algo completamente personal y

seguramente difiera mucho de lo que percibe cualquier

otro que la escuche. Así que parte de los mensajes en mi

música son intencionados, pero son para beneficio propio,

para mi comprensión y aprendizaje propios... No se trata

de “Tengo algo que decir, que lo oiga todo el mundo”, yo

sólo me comunico con mi mundo interior, algo interno

e incontrolable que parece interactuar con la conciencia

de muchos otros. En mi opinión, decir que una canción

significa esto o aquello es algo abstracto, ya que no puedo

ni imaginarme lo que hace que alguien piense o sienta...

pero me siento privilegiado y doy gracias de que lo que

hago pueda aportarle algo a la gente.

¿Crees que los artistas y músicos tienen la

responsabilidad de trasladar estos mensajes positivos

a su público?

Mientras sean sinceros consigo mismos y con lo que

hacen, ¡por mí bien! Con frecuencia, lo negativo y lo

realista no difieren demasiado... Tenemos que tener

cuidado porque la música y las frecuencias de sonido son

muy influyentes. No es algo que me tome a la ligera, no

preparo canciones en 5 minutos ¡y ya! Escucha eso. Es mi

vida y todo lo que soy en ello, intento crear música por

razones benéficas más que por razones egoístas.

¿Qué te mueve? ¿Qué te inspira y te hace reaccionar, en

la vida y en la música?

No existe la separación entre mi vida y mi música...

básicamente me inspira todo lo que veo y oigo. En cuanto

a la música, me inspiran nombres como: Roots, Manuva,

King, Tubby, Sizzla, Nittin Sawhney... ¡podría seguir un

buen rato! Nunca me he enfrascado mucho en un estilo,

he estado metido en muchos géneros... lo que hago es

una mezcla a lo bestia de todo lo que he escuchado a lo

largo de los años. A veces, sólo escucho algo en términos

puramente líricos, otras me inspiro en la actitud del que

lo hace...

¿Qué hay de otros campos de acción? ¿Has visto libros,

películas o documentales que te hayan hecho pensar?

La verdad es que leo bastante y estoy bastante metido

en el tema de las frecuencias, no sólo como audio,

sino en términos de la vida misma como frecuencia.

He averiguado que hay frecuencias en ciertos tipos de

comida, hierbas y plantas. Abarca muchos campos...

¿Cómo se origina DMZ? ¿Qué tal es trabajar junto a

Coki? ¿Qué os “ofrecéis” mutuamente?

Somos amigos desde que éramos muy pequeños, así

que sucedió de forma espontánea. Se trata de que la

gente se una, como solía pasar hace años en los sellos

independientes. Da la casualidad de que estamos metidos

en lo mismo, por lo que juntarnos fue algo natural.

El año pasado tuvimos el placer de escuchar tu sesión

en La Macarena (Red Bull Music Academy). Además,

hace poco te vimos en la ya famosa noche B. LOW.

¿Qué te parece el público español? ¿Cómo ves la

evolución de la escena Dubstep aquí?

Conozco a la gente de B.LOW, Moonshine and Subsound,

a los de Chorizo Show (Sub.fm)... y la verdad es que la han

liado bastante: traen a gente importante de todas partes

y lo están haciendo muy bien. No es fácil estar ahi cada

semana y mantener al público motivado... yo me dedico a

esto, así que sé de lo que estoy hablando.

Ya he estado aquí cuatro veces y me encanta; también

estuve en el cartel del Primavera Sound de hace dos años

y del Sonar del año anterior. ¡8.000 personas!

¿Algún otro lugar con el que hayas tenido una

conexión especial?

Me encanta Japón; ¡los japoneses son uno de los

pueblos más agradables que jamás he conocido!

También Nueva Zelanda...

Cuéntanos tu peor pesadilla y tu sueño más anhelado.

¡El Mundo es como una pesadilla ahora mismo!

Mi sueño más anhelado es que la gente entienda las

cosas mejor y tenga más paciencia; no me parece mucho

pedir...

MALA ha tenido una influencia tangible en el sonido y la evolución de la música Dubstep; además, es el 50% del equipo de producción de Digital Mystikz y del sello DMZ, el cual organiza las conocidas noches bajo el nombre de DMZ Club Night (junto a Coki y Loefah). Su inspiración se palpa al escuchar su música, ya que cada beat sale de lo más profundo del corazón. Las canciones de MALA lo son todo y un poco más...

WE HAD A CHAT OVER THE PHONE WITH THE MAN HIMSELF, IN WHICH HE SHARED SOME THOUGHTS AND INSIGHTS...

Back in the early 90s, you were highly influenced by

the Jungle scene. Tell us about those times, and about

what made you get into this musical journey?

I guess it’s a combination of things, the music I was

listening to at the time, mainly on pirate radio stations,

compelled me to want to get into it, not in a commercial

way or wanting to get into the music business, simply

coming from a place where I was enjoying music so much

that it took me to places I never experienced before...That

was my main catalyst in wanting to get involved in music.

Of course, I didn’t know then that I’d be doing what I’m

doing now, but again... you never really know! You just

do your thing and suddenly something resonates, it’s not

something you can dictate or control.

You once said “Writing Music is like Meditating”,

and with track names like “Lean Forward/ Learn”,

“Changes / Forgive”, “Living differently”... Are you

somehow delivering messages or insights, or are they

simply random names?

It’s difficult to speak about making spiritual music or

have messages because I think, up to certain extent,

we all carry some sort of insight, whether we listen to

it or not is a different thing... When it comes to writing

and naming a song I go down to what it means to me,

it’s totally personal, and probably separated from what

another person listening to it would think. So, there are

messages in my music which I put purposely, but for

my own benefit, my own teaching or understanding...

They’re not “I got something to say, come on everybody

listen to me”, it’s just me communicating with my world,

an uncontrollable internal thing that seems to interact

with other peoples’ consciousness. To say a song means a

certain thing, to me is something abstract, I can’t possibly

imagine what makes somebody think or feel... but I feel

privileged, and I’m thankful, that what I do can bring

something positive to people.

Do you feel artists/musicians have a certain

responsibility in having to carry these positive insights

to their crowd?

I think, as long as they’re real to themselves and true about

what it is that they do, then fair enough! Many times

being negative doesn’t change from being real... We have

to be careful, because music and sound frequencies are

very influential. It’s not something I take lightly, 5 minutes

and there we go! Listen to that. This is my life and I put

everything I am into it, so I try to do music for beneficial

reasons rather than for selfish ones.

What things move you, inspire you and make you

react, both in life and music?

There isn’t a separation between my life and music... I’m

inspired by pretty much everything I see and hear. In terms

of sound, names like: Roots Manuva, King Tubby, Sizzla,

Nittin Sawhney... I could go on and on forever! There has

never been something I’ve listened to continuously, I get

into many different genres, what I do is a heavily dosed

mix of everything I’ve been listening to over the years.

Sometimes, I just listen to something in pure lyrical terms,

others simply for the attitude of who’s doing it which may

inspire me...

What about in other fields? Any books, films or

documentaries you’ve watched lately that may have

got your attention?

I do read quite a lot, and I’m personally very interested

in frequencies, not just as audio, but as in Life being

frequencies. I’ve found out how there are frequencies in

certain foods, herbs and plants. It goes into many different

paths... (*Read more on Mala’s blogs on his MySpace

How did DMZ get started, and how is it working with

Coki, what do you “offer” one another?

We’ve been close friends since really young, so it happened

naturally. It’s all about the union of people, that mentality

that used to happened years ago at the independent

labels. We just happen to do the same thing, so it made

sense that we got together to do it.

Last year, we had the pleasure of enjoying your session

at Macarena Club in BCN (Red Bull Music Academy);

also, very recently at the well-known night B.LOW...

How do you feel about the Spanish crowd, and how do

you see the scene growing over here?

I know these guys from B.LOW, Moonshine and

Subsound, the Chorizo Show crew (Sub.fm)... and they’ve

basically taken it on, beyond the rest of the world, inviting

big names; they’re doing it really well! It’s not easy to be in

and out every week keeping up the crowd... I do it myself,

and I know so. I’ve already been here about four times and

I love it; I’ve also played at Primavera Sound 2 years ago,

and Sonar the year before that, 8.000 people!

Any other places you’ve been to you feel specially

connected to?

I love Japan; Japanese are some of the nicest people I’ve

ever met! Also, New Zealand...

Tell us about your worst nightmare, and your highest

dream.

The world is a bit of a nightmare at the moment!

My highest dream would be that people understand and

have more patience; I don’t think is too difficult to do...

MALA is truly influential on the sound and evolution of Dubstep music. One half of the production team Digital Mystikz and the DMZ label crew, which runs the popular DMZ Club Night (with Coki and Loefah). His inspiration shows when you hear his music, deep-hearted into every single beat. MALA’s tunes are everything and beyond...

Why is it so hard to stomach?¿Por qué es tan dificil de digerir?

What are the images that spring to mind when someone mentions the now ubiquitous phrase ‘climate change’? Does your mind project Armageddon style slides behind your eyes; images of famine, drought, natural disasters, of people being helplessly swept away on nature’s vicious tides? Or just of the poster for that film Al Gore made? The UN secretary general, Ban Ki-Moon, recently called climate change ‘the defining challenge of our age.’ Our, being us, the human race; from politicians to activists to the legions all over the world, going about our daily business as if we’re convinced that this place in which we inhabit, THIS here... the ground which we tread every day can never feasibly change. It’s home after all, right?

So what to do about it? Humans have always sought to pin down and create an ‘enemy’ when it comes to confronting threatening situations. Be it Bin Laden plotting in his cave, Bush swaggering on the golf course, or Hitler grimacing in a history text book, humanity’s default setting in confronting hostile circumstances is to create a scapegoat, a tyrant, something which you can see and react to. This is exactly why climate change presents us all with such a bizarre and unprecedented challenge: not only is it an invisible enemy, but it is something that we, ourselves, have created.

All over the world, in international organizations, amongst heads of state, and in alternative think tanks and conferences, the fate of the planet is being discussed (over tea and cake I would imagine.) However, as we have been embroiled in that good ol’ free market economy for gawd knows how many years, experts tend to base their predictions, technical reports and plans for climate change recovery and preparation on one thing. You guessed it kids... MONEEEY! Cold hard cash.

Just a coupla things about that strategy, guys.

The consequences of climate change will be, partly, on human communities, and therefore things like disaster

prevention plans and emergency aid can be thought of in monetary terms. Though the main effect climate change has is upon the earth itself, its eco systems, its flora and fauna, without which none of us would be here in the first place. They teach that in school, right? It’s fundamental that people in power realise that what we are dealing with here is something far more momentous than boshing up a few solar panels in a few strategic places and hoping for the best. Combating climate changes requires a more integral approach, and for every one of us to change the way we consume, the way we live our daily lives, and to comprehend to what extent we have taken this home of ours for granted. (For more info ask your local hippy clan - they’re down with this kinda chat.)

So by now I’m sure you’ve all heard the end-of-the-world stuff about the year 2012. Hollywood’s even made a blockbuster out of it. The theory is based around the Mayan calendar, and their ancient philosophy and wisdom. Although I’m not about to take it all too literally and head down to a nuclear bunker for all eternity, I do think the Mayan predictions hold some sweet grains of truth. They emphasise this time as being one of change, of re-evaluation, a shift of the planet to a new age.

One idea that stays with me, (and enables me to end this article on a positive note, hurrah!) is the importance stressed by the Maya of our generation in the years leading up to 2012, particularly the young. The intellectual, technological and innovative power the human race has right now is nothing short of mind blowing. Yeah, it’s important that the guys up top take the focus off money completely as a means to every end, and to focus on the planet, and the people. But no less important is the internal power each of us has, in changing how we think, act, and influence others. The future, truly, is in our hands.

¿Qué imagen te asalta cuando alguien menciona el concepto mágico “cambio climático”? ¿Proyectas diapositivas a lo Armagedón? ¿Te sobrevienen imágenes de hambruna, sequía y desastres naturales; de personas barridas sin remedio por las mareas caprichosas de la naturaleza? ¿O sólo te viene a la cabeza la película de Al Gore? El Secretario General de Naciones Unidas, Ban-Ki-Moon, acaba de declarar que el cambio climático es “el reto que marcará nuestra era”. Nuestra, siendo nosotros los humanos - de políticos a activistas a todos los pueblos - los que vivimos vidas cotidianas como si tuviéramos la seguridad de que el lugar en que habitamos - sí, este de aquí -, y el suelo que pisamos no pueda cambiar jamás. Al fin y al cabo es nuestro hogar, ¿no?

Y entonces, ¿qué hacemos? Los humanos siempre han tenido que identificar un “enemigo” y visualizarlo para afrontar situaciones conflictivas. Sea Bin Laden tramando algo en la cueva, Bush pavoneándose en el campo de golf, o Hitler leyendo un libro de historia, al final, la predisposición innata del ser humano para enfrentarse a las situaciones conflictivas es la de encontrar a un chivo expiatorio, un tirano, algo tangible que golpear. Y esa es la razón para que el cambio climático nos parezca un reto de una complejidad sin precedentes; no sólo es un enemigo invisible, sino que lo hemos creado nosotros solitos.

Organizaciones internacionales de todo el mundo, jefes de estado, comités de sabios y conferencias alternativas dialogan sobre el destino del planeta (con un trozo de pastel y un té al lado, me imagino). Sin embargo, como llevamos tantísimos años en esa súper economía de “mercado libre”, los expertos tienden a basar las predicciones, informes técnicos y planes para la recuperación del planeta en una sola cosa. La habéis acertado chavales... ¡DI-NE-RO! Dinero frío y sucio.

Sólo un par de apuntes acerca de la estrategia:

Las consecuencias del cambio climático en parte afectarán a la comunidad de los humanos y, por tanto, los planes de prevención y de emergencia pueden concebirse en términos económicos,

aunque el efecto más evidente que tiene el cambio climático se encuentra en la mismísima Tierra - en los ecosistemas, la flora y fauna, sin los que no estaríamos aquí en primer lugar. ¿No es eso lo que enseñan en el cole? Es esencial que los gobernantes se den cuenta de que lo que tenemos entre manos es algo que requiere bastante más esfuerzo que la simple colocación de unos cuantos paneles solares en lugares estratégicos a la espera de que todo mejore. Combatir el cambio climático requiere de un enfoque mucho más integral para que todos cambiemos nuestro consumismo y nuestro modus vivendi y comprendamos hasta qué punto hemos dado por sentado que el lugar en el que vivimos es eterno (Para más información, buscad a los hippies de vuestro barrio - entre ellos es una conversación recurrente).

Supongo que ya habréis oído campanas sobre aquello de que el mundo se acaba en el año 2012 (hasta Hollywood ha generado un superventas de ahí). La teoría se basa en el calendario maya y en su filosofía y sabiduría. Aunque no es que me lo tome al pie de la letra y no me encamine hacia un bunker antinuclear para pasar el resto de mis días, creo que las predicciones mayas tienen ciertos matices de verdad. Ponen énfasis en que estamos en una época de cambios, de revalorización, en un giro del planeta hacia una nueva era.

La idea que no me abandona (y que me permite terminar este artículo con una pincelada positiva, ¡hurra!) es la importancia que le dan los mayas de nuestra generación a los años que preceden al 2012, especialmente los jóvenes. El poder intelectual, tecnológico e innovador que la raza humana posee en la actualidad es para tirarse de los pelos. Está claro que es importante que los que llevan la batuta dejen de concentrarse en el dinero completamente y se centren en la finalidad, en el planeta y en sus habitantes. Pero no es menos importante el poder interno que todos tenemos para cambiar nuestra forma de pensar e influenciar a otros. El futuro realmente está en nuestras manos.

A Brazilian man apparently attended his own funeral in the middle of last month; He was badly identified as being the disfigured victim of a car crash by four of his family members, when he had in fact been out all night drinking a rum liquor called “pinga” with some friends of his. He turned up at his funeral after it had already started the next day, just in time to put a halt to it all!

EL GRAFFITERO KELLY TOWLES reside y trabaja en Washington desde hace once años. Sin embargo, el hecho de que viva en la capital de EEUU no significa que su trabajo tenga relación con la política. “A mí me encanta hacer sonreír a la gente con mi trabajo; a menudo siento que si mezclas la política y el arte a la fuerza, la intención pierde su esencia. Creo que hay muchos temas sobre los que se puede crear una obra sin que pierda capacidad de impactar”.Kelly describe DC como la ciudad en la que se siente cómoda, a la par que frustrada. La ciudad es famosa por ser un sitio donde se habla mucho; al fin y al cabo, es la ciudad de la política. Sin embargo, aquí es capaz de encontrar la inspiración necesaria y de devolverle a DC un poco de sí mismo, un poco de su imaginación. A base de trazar personajes coloridos en el paisaje urbano, a Kelly le gusta que los espacios ignorados cobren vida; por eso pinta murales en edificios decrépitos, reclamándolos como lugares útiles. El propósito de Kelly es provocar una reacción, incluso una sonrisa. Y con esa sonrisa, quizás cambiar la percepción general de una zona. Al atraer algo de atención positiva a un sitio concreto, existe la esperanza de que a la gente le empezará a importar. El arte de Kelly sirve como un catalizador para el cambio positivo, tanto en la ciudad como en las personas.“El aislamiento social y el aprisionamiento emocional son las dos cosas en las que me centro con mi trabajo; cómo afronta la gente la sociedad de hoy día y el arsenal emocional con el que cada uno está equipado”. Kelly lo hace con sus personajes: atípicos pero cercanos, muy vitales y, lo más importante, interesantes. Sus encantadores personajes crean son capas de una misma historia. Esta tapicería vibrante, colorida y llena de personajes me recuerdan a las películas etéreas y prismáticas del director Jean-

Pierre Junet, al que se refiere Kelly para describir el poder de la imagen: “La Ciudad de los Niños Perdidos” es pura excitación visual... “La primera vez que vi la película no había ni subtítulos, pero la entendías igualmente. Así es como intento hacer mi trabajo, sin subtítulos”.En la calle, sólo tienes un instante para captar la atención de alguien, su interés. El trabajo no debería ser silencioso; debería armar mucho ruido y hacer pensar a la gente que pasa. Kelly lo intenta con mucho éxito. Sus jóvenes personajes saltan de la superficie y juegan con el espectador; parece que estén en movimiento y te dejan vagar a un sueño diurno.Las influencias sudamericanas de Kelly radican mayoritariamente de Perú - la tierra de su prometida - un lugar que visita un par de veces al año. Kelly me cuenta que Perú cuenta con muchos escritores emergentes cuyas obras son intrigantes y originales. Gente como Chuck Close, Foon Sham y Egon Schiele ejercieron su influencia sobre Kelly, quien tuvo que replantearse sus propios conceptos y procesos.Los artistas que le inspiran en la actualidad son Swoon, que pasó de hacer grafitis a crear ciudades flotantes (infórmate sobre ella, sus grafitis son increíbles y las ciudades flotantes son muy interesantes); Mike Giant, un artista de calidad, además de graffitero y tatuador; y Kill Pixie, un graffitero australiano que en al actualidad está centrado en trabajos con tinta y acrílico.Todo acaba alimentando el trabajo de Towles, sus cifras, la historia... Las influencias se reflejan claramente en su trabajo pero sigue manteniendo un estilo propio. Y uno de estos días invernales de D.C. fríos y grises, espero pasar por delante de uno de sus murales.

GRAFFITI ARTIST KELLY TOWLES has been living and working in Washington DC for eleven years. However, the fact that he lives in the US capital doesn’t mean his work is interlaced with politics. “I am a big fan of making people smile with my work; a lot of the time I feel that if you force politics in your art, just to do it... it loses its soul. I think there are a lot of issues people can do art on and still make an impact”.Kelly describes DC as the city he feels comfortable in, but at the same time a city he feels frustrated with. DC is known for a lot of talk; it’s the city of politics after all. Yet he’s able to find inspiration there and give DC a little bit of himself back in return; a piece of his imagination. Weaving colourful characters into the city’s landscape, Kelly likes to bring life to ignored spaces, painting murals on decrepit buildings, reclaiming them as places with a purpose. Kelly’s purpose is to capture a reaction; maybe even a smile. And with that smile perhaps a change in the way an area is perceived. By bringing positive attention to a location, there is hope that people will begin to care. Kelly’s art serves as a catalyst for positive change in both the city and the individual. “Social isolation and emotional captivity, these are two of the major things that I comment on with my work. People dealing with the society in which we live, and the emotional arsenal that each person is equipped with.” Kelly certainly does this with his characters, which are awkward yet relatable, vivid and, more importantly, interesting. His charming characters create layers that unravel into a story. These vibrant tapestries of colour and characters remind me of the dreamy prismatic films of director Jean-Pierre

Jeunet, which Kelly uses to describe the power of image: “City of Lost Children is just a visual hard-on... The first time I saw the movie it didn’t even have subtitles and you still understand it. This is basically how I try to make my work... you don’t need subtitles.”On the street, you have one glance to catch someone’s attention, to get their interest. The work should not be quiet; it should be loud and throw images into the minds that pass. Kelly attempts and succeeds at this. His youthful characters jump from the surface, playing with the viewer. They feel like they are in motion, leaving you to drift off into a daydream. Kelly’s South American influences stem mostly from Peru, the home of his fiance, a place he visits a couple times of year. Kelly tells me that Peru has a lot of new writers who are creating intriguing and original pieces. Artists such as Chuck Close, Foon Sham, and Egon Schiele were influences, challenging Kelly on his own concepts and processes.Current artists who inspire him include Swoon, who went from being a graffiti artist to creating floating cities (check her out, her graffiti is amazing and the floating cities definitely interesting), Mike Giant, a fine artist, as well as graffiti and tattoo artist; and Kill Pixie, an Australian graffiti artist currently focusing on works done in ink and acrylic. It all feeds into Towles’ work, his figures; the story. The influences can clearly be seen in his work, yet his style remains his own. And one of these cold, grey winter days when I am in DC, I hope to pass one of his murals.

THE PAINTINGS ON THE WALLS OF MY TOWN STARTED TO CATCH MY ATTENTION WHEN I WENT TO COLLEGE; I REMEMBER SOME FACES OF TWO OR THREE COLOURS BY POSEYDON AND ROSTRO WHICH TOTALLY FASCINATED ME. FURTHER ON, I MADE SOME BAD FRIENDS AND THESE INCITED ME TO PAINT; WE BOUGHT SOME SPRAYS AND WENT TO THE WALL BEHIND THE FOOTBALL PITCH IN MY TOWN AND TRIED TO PAINT SOMETHING I HAD DRAWN. THE RESULT WAS A DISASTER, SO THE NEXT DAY I WENT TO RETOUCH IT AND MADE IT WORSE.SINCE I BEGAN I HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO COME ACROSS PEOPLE LIKE ME, OR MORE MOTIVATED THAN ME, AND THEY HAVE ALL INFLUENCED ME ONE WAY OR ANOTHER AND THAT HAS HELPED ME ATTAIN A CERTAIN CONSISTENCY IN WHAT I DO.

VIVA EL DRAP ART, ya lleva seis años en el CCCB, Barcelona, basándose única y exclusivamente en el arte reciclado. ¡Sí señor! Solamente utiliza materiales desechados, aunando un concepto a la vez ecológico y atractivo. A lo largo de los años ha conseguido inspirar a las masas a explorar las posibilidades que ofrece el reciclaje. Y, al hacerlo, también contribuye a salvar nuestro pequeño planeta.

No sólo es un lugar de encuentro para que las mentes creativas se expresen y experimenten con los residuos de un sistema que decide que algo ya no sirve, sino que también se intenta hacer reflexionar a la gente acerca de cómo integrar estas ideas en nuestras vidas y hogares.El tambor de una lavadora, por ejemplo - una de las muchas partes de este electrodoméstico, que en su día sirvió para limpiar - se convierte en una moderna lámpara de salón; los desechos de madera de los que suelen prescindir los talleres, se barren de las calles y adoptan la forma de un sillón con estilo. Este tipo de muebles se merecen un lugar dentro o fuera de tu casa, ¡sin mencionar que estarías reposando sobre algo muy ecológico!

Está claro como el agua que ha pasado un año más, que posiblemente estemos un año más cerca de la destrucción completa de la atmósfera, que tenemos que cambiar los hábitos muy rápidamente. El planeta en el que vivimos TODOS no puede soportar la excavación continua y el amontonamiento en vertederos. La sociedad del usar y tirar en la que parece que nos encontramos ha conseguido destruir - y sigue destruyendo – la belleza natural que nos legaron nuestros predecesores evolutivos. Y es una pena.

“Queremos reducir las emisiones un 10% al año”, declaró Francesc Baltasar i Albesa, Consejero de Medio Ambiente y Vivienda de La Generalitat de Catalunya.

Se está trabajando en un sinfín de charlas y planes ecológicos pero, como todos sabemos, la política lo pudre todo y al final la responsabilidad de reaccionar antes de que sea demasiado tarde recae en nosotros.

Durante el festival Drap Art la gente se une para mostrar y compartir ideas que contribuyan a un mundo mejor. El festival evita un mensaje demasiado

contundente y no sólo resulta agradable para la vista, sino también para nuestra mente y para los montículos de hierba en los que se sienta la gente a meditar sobre su existencia. Nos lanza un mensaje astuto, revolucionario e inspirador. Resalta la importancia del reciclaje y da información, algo esencial para poder progresar.

Los acontecimientos como este se tienen que repetir más a menudo para que la gente experimente de primera mano que el reciclaje puede ser tan divertido como práctico, dándonos la oportunidad de ilustrarnos con cine, conferencias y audiovisuales ecológicas que complementan a los talleres y performances tradicionales.

En el 2009 participarán más de 100 artistas de todo el mundo que compartirán sus ideas únicas de cómo hacer algo nuevo de lo viejo, divertirse con la basura y seguir buscando el cambio.

Durante el festival expondrán Bel y Bel con el “Sofa Seat 600” - un sofá sacado del asiento reciclado de un viejo Seat 132 -; Elisa GARROTE y su zapato de

piel de naranjas; Aranau Miquel y su conversión de bañeras en sillones innovadores; y nuestro diseñador creativo de la revista - el mismísimo Fabián Andino, aka Subcomandante - con sus ROLL-ON-TOYS

TÚ también puedes marcar la diferencia; es muy fácil, sólo hay que olvidarse de lo que te han incitado a creer. No tienes que cambiar tu vida entera de un día para otro sólo para ayudar. He aquí algunas pinceladas para contribuir algo a nuestro fabuloso mundo:

- Recicla y tira cada tipo de basura en su contenedor- Guarda y reutiliza las bolsas de plástico, o cómprate una bolsa de tela (la podrás encontrar en la mayoría de los supermercados)- Los cartuchos de tinta tardan unos 450 años en descomponerse. Se pueden rellenar y los cartuchos de láser se pueden volver a fabricar. La empresa Each One Counts recicla los cartuchos y además recauda fondos para fines benéficos.

HURRAH FOR DRAP ART! Now into its 6th year in CCCB, Barcelona, the Drap art Festival consists of purely recycled art. That’s right! Created from nothing more than discarded materials, its’ simple concept is both environmentally friendly and attractive. Over the years it has succeeded in drawing artists in to explore the possibilities of recycling, and in doing so, has helped in the effort to save this little planet of ours.

As well as providing an outlet for creative minds to express and experiment with the wasted materials which the system has decided are no longer worthy of use, they also try to open people’s eyes to how we can integrate these ideas into our lives and homes.

A washing machine drum for instance, once one of the many parts of a machine to aid cleaning, transformed to light our lives once again as a modern day living room lamp; scraps of wood, often dumped by hardware shops, are scooped off the streets and morphed into stylish armchairs. This kind of furniture is definitely worthy of a place inside your home, not to mention that it’s a extremely eco friendly way to support your bottom!

It’s as clear as day that as we move into a new year, another year closer perhaps to the complete destruction of our atmosphere, that our habits need to change, and fast! The earth that we ALL inhabit cannot take the continual pressure of mining and dumping. The throw-away society that we seem to have adopted has and is still destroying the natural beauty that was left to us by our ancestors. And it’s a shame.

Major climate talks and Eco plans are being worked on, but as we all know the political arena is a mess, so it comes down to us to take responsibility before it’s too late.

During the Drap Art Festival, people come together to show and share ideas for a better world. The festival omits a strong message that is not only kind on the eyes, but also kind on the mind, and kind on the grassy knolls where

people sit and ponder existence. What it tells us is clever and inspiring.

It highlights the importance of recycling, and also provides information; the key to our progression.

Events like this need to be done more often, so that more people can experience first hand how recycling can be fun as well as practical; where we get the chance to be enlightened through environmental cinema, conferences and audiovisuals which run along side the traditional exhibition workshops and performances.

2009 will see the participation of over 100 artists from around the world who will share with us their unique ideas about how old can be turned into new, how rubbish can be amusing and how change can be sought.

On display at the festival will be Bel y Bel with the “Sofa Seat 600”, a sofa recycled out of an old Seat 132, Elisa GARROTE GASH and the shoe made out of orange peel, Arnau Miquel recycling bath tubs into innovative armchairs and

our very own creative magazine designer Fabian Andio aka SubComandante with his family of ROLL-ON-TOYS.

YOU can make a difference too; it’s very easy; forget what you have been led to believe. You don’t have to change your whole life overnight in order to help.

- Separate your rubbish and dispose of it in the correct bins- Save and re-use plastic bags or buy a long life bag (stocked in most super markets)- Ink cartridges take approximately 450 years to de-compose. They can be refilled and laser cartridges can be remanufactured. Each One Counts will recycle your cartridges and raise money for charity at the same time.

El mundo de internet evoluciona muy rápido, cada día hay nuevas herramientas, nueva webs y nuevas aplicaciones, es muy dinámico, por eso hay que estar al día.

La idea nació hace 2 años. Me encanta el buen sonido y escuchar música online; hablando con la gente vi que muchas personas no sabían donde escuchar música en la red, ni siquiera los Djs sabían muy bien cómo promocionar sus mixes. No hay muchos blogs que hablen sólo de esto, así que pensé que era una buena propuesta.

Internet está lleno de música de calidad, aunque a veces cuesta encontrarla ¡Es un sinfín y un verdadero trabajo de investigación! Todavía me queda un montón por descubrir, pero estoy abierta a recomendaciones y propuestas.

Me gustaría que goodsoundOnline llegara a ser lo más completo posible y tuviera una interfaz más dinámica. En un futuro, también deseo buscar colaboradores para tener novedades semanalmente. Y además, poder sacar goodsoundOnline del mundo virtual y organizar fiestas o festival con artistas y net-radios.

Hay varias radios online o plataformas que ofrecen una excelente selección musical y una interfaz muy bien pensada como son Play.fm, Soundcloud.com, Mixcloud.com, BBC1, Magneticradio, etc. Se pueden incluso escuchar radios africanas Mytruspot.com, Radiopalmwine.com, jamaicanas 876radio.com y turcas Dinamo.fm. Una manera de

viajar descubriendo sonidos nuevos.La música no tiene fronteras y pienso que ésta ha de ajustarse a los nuevos medios, creando nuevos productos. La gente seguirá comprando música, pero en formato para descargar. Los artistas tienen que estar muy presentes en internet aunque, siempre sin olvidar escenarios y clubs, para que el público aprecie el vivo...

Para su desarrollo, hay que hacer mucho networking en webs de música, como Soundcloud, Podomatic, plataformas de promoción, etc. Si quieres crear un programa de radio, debes proponerlo a varias radios online ya que, sobre todo las pequeñas, buscan programas nuevos regularmente. Fnoob.com, por ejemplo, es una nueva especializada en música electrónica que está buscando Djs y shows. Twitter, Facebook y Myspace son también buenas herramientas para promocionarse.

De las muchas propuestas que ofrece goodsoundOnline, destacaría los podcasts de Fabric, el club londinense, que invita a un artista a presentar la música que es importante para él y los de Resident Advisor, de Tsugi.com. Soy fan de Play.fm, Total web 2.0 y su enorme selección de programas, mixes y live. Además, en goodsoundOnline, se pueden encontrar los links de 40 Dj sets y lives del Sonar y off Sonar que propone la radio austríaca.

Awdio.com es también un excelente sitio para escuchar música en directo de clubs y festivales de todo el mundo.

Por último, quisiera compartir una pequeña selección de radios online que suelo escuchar: Righton.fm, Basic.ch, Wmfu.org, R-evolucio.org, Samurai.fm, Sub.fm, Rinse.fm, Citysounds.fm, Lounge-radio.com, Caribbeanvibesradio.com y Hotmix108.com.

goodsoundOnline.net is a blog where you can discover radio programmes, online radio stations and podcasts. It’s all free, with no intrusive publicity and with plenty of good, non-commercial music.

Laurie Bender – “I’m the web designer; I work for a big company which doesn’t allow me the freedom to express myself. However, with my own projects, like goodsoundOnline, I can share useful information that hasn’t been developed just to be sold. The world of the Internet evolves very quickly; every day there are new tools, new web sites and new applications. It’s very dynamic, which is why you need to be up to date.

The idea came about two years ago. I love really good sounds and listening to online music. Having spoken to a lot of people, I saw that there are many who don’t know where to go to listen to music on the net; not even DJs know how to promote their mixes all that well. There aren’t many blogs that talk just about this, so I thought this would be a good idea.

The Internet is full of quality music although it’s sometimes difficult to find. It really is an interminable investigation job! There is still loads I have to discover but I’m open to recommendations and suggestions.

I’d like goodsoundOnline to be as complete as possible, with a more dynamic interface. In the future I also hope to find collaborators so that every week we can get something new. Plus, I’d also like to take goodsoundOnline out of the virtual world to organise events and festivals with artists and Internet radio sites.

There are various online radio sites or platforms that offer an excellent selection of music and well thought out interfaces, such as Play.fm, Soundcloud.com, Mixcloud.com, BBC1, Magneticradio.com, and so on. You can even listen to African sites Mytruspot.com, Radiopalmwine.com, Jamaican sites 876radio.com and Turkish sites Dinamo.fm. It’s a way of travelling around and discovering new sounds.

Music has no frontiers and I think this is something that needs to be adapted to new media, creating new products. People will continue to buy music, but in downloadable format. Artists need to be very present on the Internet, although they can never forget clubs or the stage because the public really appreciates live performances...

In order for that to develop, there has to be a lot of networking with the music sites, like Soundcloud and Podomatic, promotion platforms and so on. If you want to create a radio programme, you need to propose your idea to various online radio sites since they, especially the smaller ones, are regularly looking for new programmes. Fnoob.com for example is a new site specialising in electronic music which is looking for DJs and shows. Twitter, Facebook and Myspace are also good tools for promoting yourself.

Of the many aspects offered by goodsoundOnline, the ones that stand out are the Fabric podcasts (Fabric is a London club and the show invites on an artist to present the music most important to them), and the podcasts of Resident Advisor of Tsugi.com. I’m a fan of Play.fm and Total web 2.0, with its enormous selection of programmes, mixes and live performances. As well as that, on goodsoundOnline you can find links to 40 DJ sets and live performances from Sonar and off Sonar put forward by Austrian radio.

Awdio.com is also an excellent site for listening to music coming live from clubs and festivals from around the world.

Nos cuenta de su presente, Ivi Lee, frontman y alma mater de la formación.

¿Cómo fue el contacto con Mad Professor?Llegamos a él a través de MySpace. Nos contestó para que nos jntaramos en Buenos Aires, ya que venía a tocar. Escucho el disco y entendió que éramos una banda independiente que no tenía para pagarle sus honorarios, pero me pidió los tracks. Empezó a trabajarlos y me iba mandando mezclas. Cuando vino este año, lo invitamos a hacer fechas en vivo y al vernos tocar terminó de cerrar el sonido de la banda. Nos dijo que teníamos que ir a mezclarlo a Inglaterra, y dos meses más tarde viajé ahí con George (guitarrista). Justo un par de semanas antes le había empezado a mandar mensajes a Lee Perry, y antes de partir nos contestó el manager diciendo que estaba interesado en colaborar.

Con Lee Perry fue un viaje dentro de otro viaje ¿No es así?Fue muy loco, porque estando en Inglaterra surgió la posibilidad de ir a su casa-estudio en un pueblo de Suiza. Le llevé un palo santo porque a nosotros nos va la Macumba como a él y conectamos. Después bajamos al estudio donde probamos sonido y me dijo que saliera que se iba a

preparar. ¡Ahí estaba, en un parque nevado en medio de la montaña esperando que Lee Perry me dijera que entrara a grabar! Hicimos una toma que le gustó y luego le dijimos que cantara en otro tema también y lo hizo. Se integró a la banda como si nos conociera desde siempre.

¿Qué aporta Nairobi al Dub local?¿Y si cambio la pregunta?... ¡¿Qué aporta Nairobi al Dub mundial?! Nos gusta lo local y vamos por todos los barrios a tocar. Pero al mismo tiempo, la idea es viajar constantemente y llevar esto más lejos. Tenemos tantas músicas en la cabeza por desarrollar, que creo que la experiencia de cruzar fronteras es nutrir el cancionero de la banda.

¿Cómo suena Wu Wei?Es muy importante que se transmita energía y vibración, que se pueda percibir que somos un grupo latino, si bien en este disco los ritmos que tomamos no lo son típicamente. Lo clásicos del Dub es hacer temas blandos y de siete minutos, nosotros tocamos temas fuertes y de un minuto y medio. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

We spoke to front-man and alma mater of the group, Ivi Lee.

How did you contact Mad Professor?Through MySpace. He responded, saying we should get together in Buenos Aires, since he was going to be there. He heard the album and understood that we were an independent band who weren’t able to pay royalties, but he asked for the tracks. He started to work on them and began sending me mixes. When he came this year, we invited him to some live performances and seeing us play he was fully able to capture the sound of the band. He told us we had to mix in England and two months later that’s where I went, along with George (the guitarist). Just two months before I had started sending messages to Lee Perry and before we left his manager got in contact with us, saying Perry was interested in collaborating.

Working with Lee Perry was like a journey within a journey, isn’t that right?It was crazy, because being in England gave us the chance to go to his home-studio in a village in Switzerland. We took him a piece of palo santo, because like him we are into the Macumba (meaning African rituals, often religious) and in this we connected. We went to the studio where

we tested the sound and then he told us to leave for a while he began to prepare. There I was, standing in a snow-covered park in the middle of the mountains waiting for Lee Perry to invite me in to record! We recorded a take and he liked it and later we asked to sing on another too and he did. He became a part of the band, as if he’d always known us.

What does Nairobi bring to local Dub?What if I change the question… what does Nairobi bring to world Dub? We like the local stuff and we play in all neighbourhoods. At the same time, however, the idea is to travel constantly, going further and further. We have so much music in our heads, ready to develop, that I believe the experience of crossing frontiers feeds the song-creating force of the band.

How does Wu Wei sound?It’s very important to transmit energy and vibration and that you can tell we’re a Latin group, even if the rhythms we play on this album aren’t exactly typical. In Dub, classically you have these quite bland themes that go on for seven minutes but with us we play hard tracks lasting about a minute and a half.

Y PARA SEGUIR FESTEJANDO EL BUEN MOMENTO DEL QUINTETO ACABAN DE PARTICIPAR EN EL FESTIVAL DE GLASTONBURY, CONVIRTIÉNDOSE EN LA PRIMERA BANDA ARGENTINA QUE TOCA EN ESTA “CUMBRE DE LOS FESTIVALES EUROPEOS”.

IN ARGENTINA, A COUNTRY WHERE REGGAE HAS BECOME A TREND IN THE LAST 10 YEARS (BEING GENEROUS), DUB GOT OFF TO A SLOW START. GRADUALLY, HOWEVER, IT HAS BECOME A FAMILIAR SOUND TO THOSE LIVING THERE. CURRENTLY, HOLDING THE REINS OF THIS SOUND ARE NAIROBI, AN INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNISED GROUP WHO IN TWO YEARS HAVE ACHIEVED FIGURES OFTEN DIFFICULT TO ATTAIN IN THE WORLD OF ALBUMS. MAD PROFESSOR WAS THE PRODUCER BEHIND ‘WU WEI’, THE DEBUT ALBUM IN WHICH LEE ‘SCRATCH’ PERRY COLLABORATED ON TWO TRACKS WITH HIS INDUBITABLY SHAMANIC VOICE. IT’S A GOOD MOMENT FOR THE GROUP, WHO HAVE ALSO JUST PARTICIPATED AT THE GLASTONBURY FESTIVAL, BECOMING THE FIRST ARGENTINE GROUP TO PLAY AT ‘THE GREATEST OF ALL EUROPEAN FESTIVALS’.

Uno de los temas del 2009 que más van a sonar en lo que nos queda de año. Tarrus Riley demostrando una vez más su calidad y que es uno de los mejores artistas actuales con más recorrido por delante y por detrás. Junto a la voz suave de Demarco, endulzan este tema apologista.

One of the anthems of 2009 that’s going to be heard more during what’s left of this year. Tarrus Riley demonstrates his quality once again and shows us that he is one of the best current artists with a great deal both behind and ahead of him. With the smooth voice of Demarco, this apologist tune is sweetened.

Para los que no conocen el trabajo de Mai, rapera que despunta en el panorama barcelonés, ha publicado su primer álbum en solitario con Intromi2sión. Rap hardcore, duro y de la calle y la mayoría de las bases oscuras, poderosas y eminentemente electrónicas. Una de las cosas que realmente me gustaron es la abundante presencia de arreglos del DJ, algo que se ha convertido en una rareza en muchos álbumes de hip hop moderno. En cuanto a las voces y las letras, no decepcionan; tienen buenos flows y letras interesantes, además de un montón de colaboraciones...

For those who don’t know Mai, she is one of the top girls in the rap game in Barcelona, and with Intromi2sion she has delivered her first solo album. It’s hardcore rap; it’s rough and it’s from the street; the beats are for the majority heavy and dark, and quite electronic. One of the things I genuinely appreciate on this album is the numerous interventions from her DJ; something that seems to have become rare on a lot of modern day hip hop albums. As for the rapping it’s all up to industry standard, good flows and some interesting lyrics, plus a nice little bunch of features...

Si tuvieras que poner este CD en tu colección de discos, estoy bastante seguro de que estaría justo entre el último de Hip Hop y el primero de Dubstep. Ben Sharpa, surafricano de origen, ha elaborado un álbum muy original, con letras de calidad e historias potentes que contar. Las bases son muy electrónicas, a excepción de un par de ellas que son más de Hip Hop tradicional. Sin embargo, clasificaría la mayoría de los ritmos como Dubstep. Buen álbum, ¡te lo recomiendo!

If you had to place this album somewhere in your record collection, I’m pretty sure it would be smack in between the last hip hop one and the first dubstep one. Ben Sharpa, originally from South Africa has delivered a very original album here, with good lyrics and some interesting stories to tell. His beats are just about as electronic as they can get, other than a few that sound slightly more like your traditional hip hop; but I would describe most of the rhythms as being dubstep. A good album, check it out!

Los ritmos son agradables y muy “sampleados”, algo que los amantes del old school van a agradecer de veras. 21 tracks deep, this mixtape has been mixed together by Ill Thought Process, and to give it a little “heavyweight dimension” he’s dropped in a load of samples from Rocky for a little champion advice, heh heh! The beats are nice, very sample-based; something that old school hip hop heads will definitely appreciate. The rapping by Nature Kid & Runamuks is up to scratch, you can expect some nice flowing and some good punch lines on here... and there is one really good reason why you should all get this mixtape... Konshens, otro de los artistas que en los 2/3 últimos años nos ha enamorado con sus letras, para demostrar que es uno de los youth que va a salir con más fuerza. De los pocos artistas actuales que conservan el toque Roots que tanto nos gusta.

Konshens, another artist whose lyrics we’ve fallen in love with over the last 2/3 years, shows that he is one of the youth movement who are going to come out punching the strongest. Of the few current artists preserving the touch of Roots we like so much.

¿Qué pasa por tu cabeza cuando estás ahí en lo más alto y lejos de todo? Pienso lo afortunado que soy por estar disfrutando de mi hobby a la vez que trabajando. Disfruto mucho del paisaje en días soleados y aprovecho al máximo cada metro de descenso. Me siento realizado.

¿Qué momento mágico compartirías?Uno de los que recuerdo con mayor pasión fue en 2007, en las Montañas Rocosas de Canadá, tuve el placer de saborear un “First Descent”: Descender por donde antes nunca nadie lo ha hecho.Hasta 12m de nieve, en una de las mayores nevadas en 20 años, que acumuló nieve en lugares escarpados vírgenes. Así que, previo ascenso en helicóptero a la cima y con una tensión considerable por riesgo de avalanchas, descendimos; la bautizamos “Spanish Glow”.

Danos tu punto de vista acerca de la escena profesional local de Snowboard. ¿Qué estaciones y atletas destacarías?Soy muy crítico. Podría estar mucho mejor. Muchos atletas que tienen aptitudes y nivel para destacar se preocupan más de si otros tienen o no patrocinadores, usando la crítica destructiva en vez de plantearse una estrategia de futuro para poder dedicarse a esto. En mi opinión, hay mucho nivel desperdiciado y sobra envidia; y te lo dice alguien que no es el mejor en nada, sino un currante incansable.

Respecto a estaciones, involucradas al Freestyle, destacaría Boi Taull Resort, por su implicación en un proyecto futuro de un snowpark, con espacio “Pro” para entrenar y evolucionar. Otro es la pista indoor Madrid Snowzone, con una gran cantera de riders locales y un espacio freestyle donde entrenar a

diario, 365 días. También apuestan por áreas Freestyle: Cerler, La Molina y Formigal.Entre jóvenes atletas a destacar, Gorka, Olai y Gery, los primeros dos hermanos asturianos con mucho futuro, y el tercero un catalán que también dará que hablar. Además del gran papel, en la modalidad Half Pipe, de nuestra futura olímpica Queralt Castellet, con resultados históricos en snowboard femenino.

¿Existe ya una Tabla ProModel Fidel Alonso? ¿O hay perspectivas de que la haya?¡Ya me gustaría! Te contaré un secreto (ahora que nadie nos oye): Hace tiempo tuve una propuesta del Team Manager de uno de mis antiguos sponsors, iba a crear una marca de tablas Snowboard y pensó en mi para fabricar una ProModel con mi firma en España; dada su confianza para que tuviera ventas nacionalmente y debido a mi contacto cercano con los aficionados, mi website, buen trato con puntos de venta... Había muchas posibilidades, pero desgraciadamente ahí quedó. ¡No lo descarto! Es complicado, algunos riders europeos que son mucho mejores que muchos de aquí, ni la tienen ni la tendrán, por lo que implica y el “nivelazo” que hay que tener.

¿Alguna competición importante próximamente?La crisis también ha influido en las competiciones y este año los calendarios están sufriendo continuos cambios, estoy a espera de retoques. La idea es completar el Circuito WSS, que puntúa tanto para el Tour Mundial como para el Ranking Nacional, y otros eventos importantes, exhibiciones, sesiones de fotos de acción, etc. También viajaré de nuevo a dos o tres lugares lejanos durante la temporada para reportajes fotográficos y de TV.Probablemente visite algunas de las estaciones del Pirineo para competiciones.

¿Qué importancia le das a la preparación física, tanto para el aficionado como el profesional de snowboard?¡Muchísima! Desde que Edu Serrano, mi preparador, gestiona el entrenamiento de mi cuerpo he notado mucho los resultados, a todos los niveles. El aficionado de fin de semana, o el que sube una semana con la familia o los colegas, se sorprendería si dedicase un mínimo tiempo a prepararse con ejercicios básicos, ¡lo recomiendo! Imagina esquiar o surfear sin agujetas, menos lesiones, más aguante...En cuanto al entrenamiento de élite, en el centro donde me preparo (cadena Holiday Gym), aprovechamos todo el material de fitness y musculación, más el uso de las salas, para potenciar y preparar el cuerpo para la temporada.

¿Qué música escuchas? ¿Alguna película o libro te han marcado últimamente?Me gusta de todo, desde flamenco a Hip Hop, Rock... Cuando estoy con la tabla llevo un buen surtido, según mi estado de ánimo. Últimamente escucho “Vetusta Morla”, lo último de Eminem y algo de “El Barrio.Los libros que me han marcado están lejos de las típicas novelas de suspense o ciencia ficción, son más prácticos para la vida y conocidos, como “La Buena Suerte” o “¿Quién se ha llevado mi queso?”, te hacen reflexionar y abrir la mente.

¿Alguna otra pasión?El Golf me ha enganchado obsesivamente desde hace dos años. Y lo que pille: Fútbol, Paddle... Intento pasar el mayor tiempo posible con los míos.

What goes through your head when you’re up there so high and far away from everything else?I think about how fortunate I am to be enjoying my hobby at the same time as working. I love the landscapes on sunny days and I take full advantage of every metre when I descend. I feel complete.

Share with us one of your more magical moments.One that I remember most passionately took place in 2007, in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, where I had the pleasure to taste a ‘First Descent’. This is when you go down a slope where nobody else ever has.There was up to 12 metres of snow, following one of the biggest snowfalls in 20 years; the snow had amassed in steep, untouched places. So it was we went up first in a helicopter and then, with considerable tension due to the risk of avalanches, down we went. We baptised the descent the ‘Spanish Glow’.

What’s your opinion in regards to the local professional snowboard scene? What are the places and practitioners that stand out?I’m very critical so I could spend a lot of time on this. A lot of athletes who have the skills and level to stand out tend to worry more about who has sponsors or not, using deconstructive criticism rather than putting forward a future strategy that will allow them to dedicate themselves to the sport. In my opinion there’s a lot of wasted talent out there and there’s too much envy; this is from someone who sees himself as being the best, but as someone who sees himself as an indefatigable grafter.In respect to the resorts, those involved with Freestyle, the Boi Taull Resort stands out, for it’s involvement in a future snow-park project, with a ‘Pro’ area for training and development. Another is the indoor slope at Madrid’s Snowzone, with its big group of young local riders and a freestyle area where you can train every day, 365 days a year. I’d also recommend Cerler, La Molina and Formigal for Freestyle areas.Of the younger athletes, some of those of note are Gorka, Olai and Gery, the first two being brothers from Asturias with a great future ahead of them, and the third a Catalan who will also be talked about in times to come. Then, in the Half Pipe area, we have our future Olympic representative Queralt Castellet, who’s had historic results in the female snowboard section.

Is there already a Fidel Alonso ProModel Snowboard or is there talk of one soon?I’d love that! I’ll tell you a secret (now that nobody is listening): some time ago I received a proposal from the team manager of one of my old sponsors; they wanted to create a brand of snowboard and had thought about me for the manufacture of a ProModel with my signature in Spanish on it. They were confident of national sales thanks to my close contact with aficionados, my website... it was a good deal with selling points... There were a lot

of possibilities, but sadly it never went further than that. I’m not dismissing it, though! It’s complicated; some European riders who are a lot better than many here don’t have their names of boards and never will, for reasons including what that sort of branding implies and, obviously, the necessary high level you’d have to have in order to merit it.

Are there any important competitions coming up?The economic crisis has had its effect on competitions and this year the calendars are suffering continual changes. I’m waiting on amendments. The plan is to complete the WSS Circuit, which counts as much towards the World Tour as the National Ranking. There are other important events like exhibitions and action photo shoots, etc. I will also be travelling once again to two or three far-off places during the season for photographic and television reports.I’ll probably visit some of the resorts in the Pyrenees for the competitions too.

How important is the physical preparation, whether you’re a snowboard professional or an aficionado?Loads! Since Edu Serrano, my coach, started managing the training of my body, I’ve noticed the results a lot, on all levels. The weekend aficionado, or the guy who takes his family or friends up for a week, would be surprised at the results of just a little time dedicated to some basic warm up exercises. I totally recommend it! Imagine skiing or surfing without cramps, with fewer injuries and more resistance...In so far as training goes for the elite, at the centre where I train (the Holiday Gym chain), we take full advantage of all the fitness and muscle-toning equipment, plus the use of special rooms where you can prepare the body and your potential for the season.

What music do you listen to? Is there a film or a book that has meant something to you recently?I like everything, from flamenco to Hip Hop, rock... when I’m on the snowboard I take a good selection, depending on my mental state. Lately I listen to ‘Vetusta Morla’, the last Eminem album and something from ‘El Barrio’.The books that have left their mark on me are far from the usual suspense or sci-fi novels; they’re more practical in terms of life and knowledge, like ‘La Buena Suerte’ (Good Fortune) or ‘Who Moved my Cheese?’ These books make you reflect on life and open your mind.

What else are you passionate about?I’ve been obsessive about golf for the past two years. I catch a little football and swim... I try to spend as much time as possible on my own things.

The bags that they claim as alternatives are as follows:RAFFIA BAGS: manufactured from braided polypropy-lene. THESE BAGS ARE NON-BIODEGRADABLE AND CANNOT BE RECYCLED (due to the complexity of their composition). They come from Asian countries and thus the pollution caused by their manufacture and transport is immensely superior to that caused by the traditional polythene bags manufactured in Spain.BIODEGRADABLE BAG: these consist of approximately 90% petroleum composites. They are biodegradable

but not if you throw them into the sea or on the ground; they only decompose on compost heaps. These bags are ideal for selective collection of organic material for industrial composting (which doesn’t exist in Spain).NYLON BAG: plastic, with the same problems accorded the raffia bags.

With this information, we conclude that this campaign can be reduced to a purely marketing-orientated strategy with economic ends. They cannot support or give examples

from their own publicity and neither do they offer a convincing, rational solution to the problem, as has been the case with some Nordic countries who, after removing plastic bags, had them replaced with paper ones. We could debate about which of those is the most ecological too, plastic or paper, but, well, we’ll leave that to the politicians. For the moment we have enough to do not being swayed by these nefarious publicity campaigns, as well as becoming more conscious once again about the importance of recycling.

Este mes vamos a cuestionarnos una de las últimas campañas aparentemente “con fines ecologistas” que ha lanzado una gran empresa de supermercados y de la que no vamos a decir su nombre par tal de no darles más publicidad de la que ellos mismos ya se han encargado de darse mediante este polémico spot.

Dicha campaña, ha sido concienciadamente realizada para que pareciera estar reivindicando el mal uso que hacemos los consumidores de las bolsas de plástico, alegando en su estrategia, que por tal de reciclar y cooperar con el medio ambiente, a partir de ahora, cuando vayamos a comprar al supermercado, en vez de darnos “gratuitamente” una bolsa de plástico, tendremos a nuestra disposición bolsas de otros materiales según ellos más biodegradables, ecológicos y nada gratuitos ya que son de pago por el usuario.

La campaña fue bastante agresiva y clara en cuanto al mensaje que querían

difundir, vuelvo a decir, aparentemente: Las bolsas son “caca”, y tardan en descomponerse alrededor de 400 años, por lo tanto, a partir de ahora ya no se ofrecen más bolsas “caca” de plástico para colaborar con el medio ambiente.

Este ha sido el mensaje que, alto y claro, se ha estado pronunciando a través de varios medios durante unas semanas. Pero, como dice el dicho, no todo lo que reluce es oro, y detrás de esta publicidad, como no, siempre hay una estrategia para nada ecológica y sobre todo muy económica.

La realidad es que, no por fabricar más bolsas de plástico significa que seamos menos ecológicos – en parte –, sino que, el hecho de NO reciclar estas bolsas, es cuando no somos ecológicos.

Como bien sabemos, o deberíamos saber, existe un contenedor de color amarillo que sirve precisamente para reciclar el plástico, donde las bolsas de los supermercados entrarían dentro la clasificación de “plástico reciclable”. Pero otra vez, el marketing nos hace esclavos y cómplices de sus artimañas por tal de llevarnos por el camino que ellos quieren, sin mostrarnos lo que realmente consiguen con esto: embolsarse millones de euros gracias a la retirada de las bolsas de plástico y a su vez, la venta de otras más “ecológicas”.

Y aquí llega nuestra verdad: Lo que no dicen en su spot es que las bolsas de plástico de toda la vida:*1. Proceden del petróleo, como la totalidad del resto de productos del plástico, y como el 90% de la materia prima que compone las famosas bolsas biodegradables de fécula de patata.*2. España es líder en Europa en la producción de bolsas de plástico, por lo que el será enorme el impacto que tendrá la reducción de este producto sobre la economía española. Más de 6000 familias viven de la producción directa de esta bolsa, y muchas más de su distribución y comercialización.

Y que las bolsas que proponen como alternativa, se componen de:BOLSA DE RAFIA: fabricada con polipropileno trenzado.NO ES BIODEGRADABLE, y NO SE PUEDE RECICLAR (Por la complejidad de su composición). Procede de países asiáticos, por lo que la contaminación producida en su fabricación y transporte es inmensamente superior a las tradicionales bolsas de polietileno fabricadas en España.BOLSA BIODEGRADABLE: estas bolsas llevan en su composición aproximadamente un 90% de compuestos del petróleo. Son biodegradables, pero no si uno las tira al mar o a la tierra; solo se descomponen en ambientes de compostaje. Estas bolsas son ideales para la recogida selectiva de materia

orgánica, cuyo fin fuese el compostaje industrial (cosa

que en España no existe).BOLSA DE NYLON: plástico. Misma problemática que la de rafia.

Con estos datos, llegamos a la conclusión de que este spot se reduce a una pura estrategia de marketing con fines económicos, pues ni tan siquiera pueden dar apoyo y ejemplo de su propia campaña publicitaria, así como tampoco siguen una solución convincente y razonable como puede ser el caso de algunos países nórdicos en los que tras retirar las bolsas de plástico, las han cambiado por bolsas de papel, nada que ver entre ellas el material del que están hechas. Aunque puestos a debatir, también podríamos hacerlo sobre cuál es mas ecológica si la de plástico o la de papel, pero bueno, esto ya lo dejamos para los políticos, que nosotros ya tenemos suficiente con no dejarnos engatusar por estas campañas publicitarias nefastas, y también en concienciarnos una vez más para reciclar debidamente.

This month we’re going to take a look at the latest, apparently ‘ecological’ campaign launched by a large supermarket business – whose name we’re not going to mention so as not to give them any more publicity than they themselves have accrued from their polemic advertisement.

Said campaign, which has been made coincidentally to look like a telling-off to consumers about their misuse of plastic bags, alleges that the business’ strategy, in terms of recycling and respecting the environment, means that from now on when people purchase items in these supermarkets they will no longer get a ‘free’ plastic bag. Instead they will find bags made from other materials which, according to the business, are more biodegradable, ecological... and no longer free.

It was a pretty clear, aggressive campaign in terms of the message they wanted to transmit, which was that, I repeat apparently, plastic bags are ‘crap’ and take some 400 years to decompose and that to collaborate with environmental concerns they would no longer be offering these ‘crap’ bags.

This message has been loudly transmitted via various media during a number of weeks. But, as the old saying goes, not all that glitters is gold. Behind the campaign, unsurprisingly, lies a strategy which is not ecological but rather economical.The reality is not, at least in part, that manufacturing plastic bags implies

we are less ecological. It is rather the fact that we do NOT recycle these bags that means we aren’t ecological.

As we all know, or should know, there are already yellow containers on the street which serve for the recycling of plastics, where supermarket bags, classified as recyclable plastic, can be placed. However, once again, marketing makes slaves and accomplices of us all, manipulating us into taking the path they favour, without showing us what they really mean to achieve through these moves: namely millions of Euros, thanks to the parallel removal of plastic bags and the sale of more ‘ecological’ ones.

Here comes the truth. What they don’t mention in their ad about plastic bags is this:*1. All plastic bags come from petroleum, like all plastic products, and 90% of the prime material that make up these famous biodegradable bags is potato starch.*2. Spain is the European leader in plastic bag manufacture, which means that the impact on the Spanish economy of the campaign to reduce the use of plastic bags will be enormous.

“El proyecto nace de nuestra pasión por el Hip Hop desde siempre, pero además, Quiman (Mc Gato) había viajado antes a Guinea para hacer su tesis antropológica sobre éste movimiento en África, apoyado por la universidad de Barcelona y centro cultural de Malabo. Estuvo hablando con chicos que hacen Rap ahí y tras estar en contacto durante tiempo, vimos la posibilidad de crear este reportaje y reflejar así el por qué de la creciente difusión del movimiento Hip Hop por todo el mundo. Qué les da el Rap a estos chavales y qué aportan ellos al Rap. Estamos satisfechos de haber podido mostrar realmente cómo son y quisiéramos que pueda ver la película cuanta más gente mejor, no sólo amantes del Rap. No hay que olvidar que los guineanos todavía ven a España como parte de su país (de hecho lo fue) y siguen nuestra cultura.

Tuvimos dificultades, sobre todo, políticas y legales. En Guinea Ecuatorial no existe democracia real, es falsa y encubre una dictadura militar, la cuál está absorbiendo todo el dinero que entra ¡que es muchísimo! principalmente del petróleo. El gobierno no quiere que se vea la realidad del país, nunca se habla de política en los medios.

Fuimos ahí sin permisos y sin avisar, sólo a los chicos, así que estuvimos gravando siempre de incógnito y en barrios sobre todo marginales, en el centro era imposible. Camuflando cámaras y cintas en la aduana y con temor, incluso fuimos arrestados y acusados de espías.

Teníamos de antemano la idea de lo que queríamos transmitir y lo del concierto ahí, pero íbamos improvisando secuencias, según las circunstancias y el talento de los chicos que elegíamos sobre la marcha.

A nivel contenido y a la hora de editar, la dificultad estaba en que teníamos que censurar algunas palabras de los chicos, para protegerlos ya que no se pueden defender y podrían tener muchos problemas. Todo siempre un poco velado, insinuado o cantado, las canciones les permiten explayarse a gusto y sin repercusiones (o al menos, no creemos que haya).Aquello es pequeño y las noticias corren, era difícil pasar desapercibidos.

BARRIO X (o Ela Nguema): Los chicos del Rap le bautizaron así, es un nombre potente y para ellos X es sinónimo de parar el “mal rollo”, las armas y a la policía ¡que no entre!

Lo positivo del lugar: Lo poco que tienen lo comparten: la comida, los medios, las ganas... ¡Todo!

Lo negativo: Sólo hay luz una vez al día, no hay agua corriente (hay que ir a buscarla a una fuente y lavan en un río sucio), enfermedades, viven 6 personas en sólo 10 metros cuadrados...pese a todo, siguen adelante y tienen ganas de hacer Rap. Como los chavales de aquí, tienen ilusión por las cosas y ahorran para comprarse zapatillas de marca, pero sus condiciones son pésimas. Lo que da impotencia es que en Guinea entra capital, se exporta un barril de petróleo por habitante al día, pero a un precio bajísimo y todo el beneficio es para el presidente. Desde que exportan, la esperanza de vida ha bajado y la mortalidad infantil ha subido.

En este barrio se intenta vivir un poco al margen de esta realidad, no veo posible una revolución en Guinea, su carácter es demasiado afable. Hablan de ello y de de armas, pero intentan hacer su vida, sin martirizarse”.

Con frases como “A muchos les duele que seamos el mañana” ¿Cómo ves a estos MCs, como filósofos o “terroristas de la palabra”?

“Un punto intermedio; en el caso de Guinea, creo que más filósofos. Esta generación de chicos de 16-20 años, se están dando cuenta de que, tarde o temprano, las cosas van a cambiar. Llegará su momento de tomar el relevo. No les veo como terroristas, transgreden, pero sin afán de escandalizar, simplemente una necesidad imperiosa de hablar y soltar lo que llevan dentro, de ser escuchados. ¡Ahí los terroristas son otros!

Actualmente, se empiezan a poder expresar a través del arte, el mundo se está globalizando y todo es obvio. El presidente mismo empieza a percatarse de que ha de volverse más tolerante, así que los castigos son menos. Hace 20 años era muchísimo peor y los de 35-40 años tienen tanto miedo que no quieren hablar. Los jóvenes ansían hacerlo. Muchos de los que han cuestionado el régimen están fuera del país o en la cárcel. El miedo sigue, pero la libertad crece.

Hace poco, salió un álbum recopilatorio de Hip Hop de Malabo que incluía 2 temas muy políticos, la reacción de los de las generaciones más mayores al escucharlos era increíble, se reían y decían “¡jóvenes locos!”, pero con admiración.

Para ellos venir aquí es casi imposible, pero las relaciones Malabo-BCN continúan; en breve, se celebra ahí el campeonato nacional de Rap y Quiman irá para gravar un CD del evento. También les estamos gravando unos video-clips”.

“The project came about because of our life-long passion for Hip Hop but also because Quiman (MC Gato) had travelled to Guinea before. He went to do his anthropological thesis about this movement in Africa, supported by Barcelona University and the cultural centre of Malabo. He was talking to guys who did Rap there. We had the possibility of making this report, which was a way to reflect upon the growing diffusion of the Hip Hop movement around the world. What does Rap bring to these guys and what do they bring to it? We’re happy to have been able to show how the people there really are and we wanted as many people as possible, not just Rap lovers, to see it. You mustn’t forget that a lot of Guineans still see Spain as part of their country (which in fact it was) and that they do follow our culture.

We had difficulties, mostly political and legal. In Equatorial Guinea a real democracy doesn’t exist; it’s a false one, headed by a military dictator, which is absorbing all the money that comes in from petroleum (which is a lot!). The government doesn’t want anyone to see the reality of the country and the media never discusses politics.

We went there without permission or notification, just the boys, and we were recording incognito in these marginal neighbourhoods - it was impossible in the centre. Camouflaging cameras and tapes and, pretty afraid by that point, we were even arrested and accused of spying.

We already had an idea beforehand of what we wanted to transmit, about the concert there, but we also had to improvise according to circumstances and the talent of the guys who we picked up as we went along.

In terms of content and editing, the difficulty was in censoring some of the boys’ words, to protect them, since they weren’t able to defend themselves and would have had to face a lot of problems. Sometimes veiled, insinuated or clearly sung, the songs permitted them to reflect upon things as they wanted, without repercussions (at least we don’t think there were). It’s a small place and news travels; it was difficult to pass by unnoticed.

BARRIO X (or Ela Nguema): the Rap boys baptised the place this way; it’s a powerful name and for them X is synonymous with the heavy shit, the weapons and the police (who don’t enter the neighbourhood!). The positive thing about the place, you might think strangely, is how little they have to share: food, means, desire... which is everything!

What’s negative is that there is only power once during the day, there’s no running water (you have to go and get it from a well and they wash in a dirty river), illness is rife and 6 people have to live in a space which is only 10 square metres. Despite all this, they keep going forward and have a strong desire to rap.

Like lads in Europe, they look forward to things and save up to buy brand-name shoes but they live in awful conditions. What makes them feel impotent is that capital does enter Guinea, which exports a barrel of petroleum per inhabitant every day, but all the profit goes to the president. Since the beginning of exportation, life expectancy has lowered and infant mortality has risen.

In this neighbourhood, people try to live on the margins of this reality; I don’t see a revolution taking place in Guinea since the character of the people is perhaps too affable. They talk about it, and the weapons, but they try to live their lives, without becoming martyrs to it.”

With phrases like ‘it hurts many of us to wake to a new morning’, how do you see these MCs, like philosophers or ‘word terrorists’?

“Somewhere in between; in Guinea’s case, I’d say they were more philosophical. The generation of boys between 16 and 20 are realising that sooner or later things are going to change and that their time will come to take over. I don’t see them as terrorists; they transgress, but without the aim of scandalising – it’s simply an imperative need to speak and to release what’s inside... and to be heard. In Guinea, it’s the others who are the terrorists!

Lately they have begun to express themselves through art; the world is globalising and everything is visible. Even the president has begun to notice that there’s a need to be more tolerant and so punishment is becoming less harsh. It was a lot worse 20 years ago; those aged between 35 and 40 were too scared and didn’t want to speak. The young generation are anxious to speak. Many of those who have questioned the regime are out of the country or in jail. There is still fear but liberty is growing.

Not long ago, a compilation Hip Hop album from Malabo which included two very political tracks came out. The reaction of the older generations at hearing it was incredible; they laughed and said ‘crazy young people!’, but they said it with admiration.

For them, to come over here is impossible, but relations between Malabo and Barcelona continue; in short, the national championship of Rap will take place there and Quiman will go to record a CD of the event. We’re also recording some video-clips for them.”

Me he pasado por el gimnasio de K-1 de L’Hospitalet de Llobregat para conversar con el

campeón de Tae Kwon Do conocido en todo el mundo, Paco Jimenez Delgado. Durante

sus años en activo, Paco ha recogido un número impresionante de premios, como el de

subcampeón del mundo en 1987, campeón de Europa en 1990, y campeón de España

tantas veces que ni siquiera nos lo puede decir con exactitud! Aparte del Tae kwon do,

Paco practica también otras artes marciales como el Hap ki do, el kickboxing y el Thai

boxing. También ha sido la primera persona en introducir el K-1 en España. El K-1 es una

combinación letal de varias artes marciales, la cual es bastante popular hoy en día.

No obstante, para Paco el Tae kwon Do será siempre su base de la cual se han desarrollado

todas las otras modalidades que practica. “Taekwondo” es un arte marcial originaria de

Korea, y es el deporte nacional en Corea del Sur; tae (태, 跆) significa “golpear o romper

con el pie”; kwon (권, 拳) significa “golpear o romper con el puño”; y do (도, 道) quiere decir

“manera,” “método,” o “arte”. Así que se podría traducir como “Método del pie y el puño”,

o “el arte de golpear con los pies y los puños” . “La filosofía detrás de éste arte marcial se

puede resumir en dos frases extraídas del libro de estudios, “Seré un campeón de justicia y

libertad”, y “Construiré un mundo mejor y más pacífico”. Estas filosofías son enseñanzas

muy importantes transmitidas por Paco y su gimnasio en general. Para Paco, la fortaleza

mental detrás de las artes marciales, es mucho más importante que la fortaleza física.

El centro de K-1 que Paco lidera, con su esposa e hijos en la línea de sucesión, ha sido

un lugar fantástico para visitar. Hay posters de recientes campeones en todas las paredes,

colocados al lado de los trofeos que éstos han ganado con gran honor. Se percibe al visitar

este lugar, que es más una comunidad que un gimnasio con niños de edades que empiezan

desde los 4 años, entrando y saliendo del lugar, siempre parando para saludar a Paco y

contarle de sus recientes aventuras. Para mi ha sido como sentirme en un lugar seguro, en

el medio de un barrio que precisamente es famoso por no ser tan seguro. En tiempos en

los que la gente pasa demasiado tiempo jugando con la consola, navegando por Internet

o saliendo a la calle en busca de un espacio para la libre expresión, el gimnasio es el tipo

de lugar que se necesita en un área que ofrece pocas opciones para las más jóvenes en

I went over to check out the K-1 Gym in the barrio of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat to have

a chat with the world-renowned Tae Kwon Do champion, Paco Jimenez Delgado. In his

years of competing he has collected an impressively long list of awards. A couple of

them being sub-champion of the world in 1987, then champion of Europe in 1990, as

well as being the champion of Spain (so many times he can’t remember how many!). He

practices a number of martial arts apart from Tae Kwon Do; Hap Ki Do, Kickboxing and

Thai Boxing to name but a few. He was also the first person to introduce K-1 to Spain.

K-1 is a lethal combination of various martial arts that has become extremely popular.

However for Paco, Tae Kwon Do will always be his base, and from where all the others

sprang. “Taekwondo” is a Korean martial art and the national sport of South Korea; tae (

태, 跆) means “to strike or break with foot”; kwon (권, 拳) means “to strike or break with

fist”; and do (도, 道) means “way,” “method,” or “art.” Thus, it can be loosely translated

as “the way of the foot and fist” or “the way of kicking and punching.” The philosophy

behind the martial art can be loosely summed up in two phrases from the students’ book,

“I shall be a champion of justice and freedom” “I shall build a better and peaceful

world”. These philosophies are things that Paco and his gym bring to their classes. For

Paco, ones mental strength behind the martial art is more important than ones physical

strength.

The K-1 centre, run by Paco with his wife and children not far behind, was an awesome

place to see. There are posters of champions plastered all over the walls with awards

they have won proudly next to them. You can tell at once that it’s more of a community

centre than a gym with kids as young as four running in and out of the place, always

stopping to say hi to Paco and to tell him what they have been up to. To me it feels like

a safe haven in the middle of quite a tough barrio. In a time where people spend far too

much time playing video games, surfing the Internet or hitting the streets in the hunt for

self-expression, the gym is the kind of place you want in an area that scarcely caters

Formas extrañas cruzaban mi mente como si fueran aviones de combate iluminando la oscuridad. Estaba medio dormido en una enorme piscina llena de nada, sintiéndome inmóvil a la par que ingrávido, sin sujeción aparente. Tras desaparecer, estas formas volvieron como si hicieran equilibrio sobre el mismísimo eje de mi mente. Los colores, hechos añicos, se alejaron dando vueltas como un grupo de bailarines que se tambalean en la noche para acabar retrocediendo como si estuvieran asidos por gomas del tamaño de un espagueti.

Acabaron por chocar y formaron un solo triángulo deslumbrante en el centro de mi campo visual. Pero en cuanto se hubieron fusionado, empezaron a descomponerse, esta vez en fragmentos todavía más pequeños. Se produjo una intensa explosión de luz y me desperté pensando en triángulos, esta vez más que nunca.

Pensé en la portada del disco de Pink Floyd Dark Side of The Moon; en las pirámides; en el misterio de las Bermudas; en los Illuminati; en los coches de tres ruedas; en los deltas de los ríos y las matemáticas. Es curioso lo que la mente puede hacer a primera hora de la mañana... en cualquier caso, me sentía intrigado. La ducha fría me sacó de mi aturdimiento pero mis sueños no me abandonaban.

Hasta que no vi a un amigo al cabo de un rato, no logré aclarar mis visiones. Él me contó que muchos veían formas geométricas en estado somnoliento, y que esa gente estaba presuntamente conectada de una forma u otra al mundo de los espíritus. Delante de mis narices se aparecían imágenes nítidas de gurús tarareando, chamanes en trance y clarividentes histéricos. Me asaltó una punzada de entusiasmo al pensar que quizás poseía alguna habilidad sobrehumana de la que nunca había sido consciente.

Me sentí entusiasmado y confuso a la vez. Seguía sin saber qué relación tenían las formas imaginarias de mi cabeza con los triángulos de mi sueño y, más en concreto, la relación que tenían con la magia que poseen estos maestros espirituales.

Primero caí en la cuenta de que los triángulos tenían tres puntas y tres costados. De cajón. La conexión tenía sentido, no sólo los clarividentes, chamanes y gurús veían ese tipo de triángulos en sus trances, sino que el número tres era - y por lo que sé sigue siendo - el número mágico.

Así que empecé a investigar el número; salía en todas partes. Primero con Platón, que lo veía como la simbología del triángulo; incluso llegó a pensar que el mundo estaba hecho de triángulos. Y, si Platón cayó en la cuenta de esto - pensé - el número y la forma deben haber estado muy presentes en los libros de historia. Así que seguí con mis pesquisas y descubrí que en la mitología griega los elementos tenían tendencia a venir en múltiplos de tres (sirva de ejemplo Cerbero, un perro con tres cabezas).

También era curioso que le habían seguido los cuentos populares: Los tres cerditos, los tres deseos, los tres osos y los tres ratones negros. Y en la religión tampoco puedes evitar fijarte, más que nada porque está por todas partes. En la antigua Babilonia, Anu, Bel y Ea eran los tres dioses principales que representaban respectivamente el cielo, la tierra y el abismo. Lo mismo sucedía con el dios egipcio del sol: Khepri (amanecer), Re (mediodía) y Atum (ocaso). Los cristianos tienen La Santa Trinidad: El Padre, El Hijo y El Espíritu Santo. Jesús resucitó al tercer día y aparecieron tres hombres sabios.

Entonces, le eché un vistazo a la astronomía y me tuve que preguntar... ¿es casualidad que seamos el tercer planeta del sistema solar? Todavía tengo que descubrir el significado tras eso. Descartes hablaba de dualismo, del genio maligno; no decía nada del número tres. Así que depende de mí. Está claro que he recibido la llamada del chamán. En un futuro cercano estaré sentado en lo alto de un triángulo redondeado (es decir, una colina) debatiéndome sobre este misterio. Cuando queráis podéis pasaros por aquí con preguntas existenciales... y sándwiches.

Strange shapes darted past my mind like

luminous fighter jets in the darkness. I was half awake, motionless yet floating, apparently unsupported, in a vast pool of nothingness. Having disappeared, the shapes returned as if swung on an axis

from the centre of my mind. Splintered colours spun away like reeling dancers in the night, then recoiled as though attached by spaghetti-like lengths of rubber band.

Eventually, they collided to form a single triangle in the centre of my vision, magnificently bright and brilliant. No sooner had they merged, they began to break apart, this time into smaller fragments. There was a short burst of intense light and I woke up, thinking, more than I have ever

thought before, about triangles.

I thought of Pink Floyd’s cover to Dark Side Of The Moon, of the Pyramids, of Bermuda and all its mystery, the Illuminati, three wheeled cars, river deltas and mathematics. Strange what the mind is capable of first thing in the morning… Anyway, I was intrigued. A cold shower

wrenched me from my daze, but the dream did not leave me.

It was not until I met a friend later that my visions were brought to some light; he told me about others who had seen geometric shapes in dreamlike states, and that such people were thought to be connected in one way or another with the spirit world. Vivid images

of humming Gurus, entranced Shaman and hysterical clairvoyants played teasingly at the forefront of my mind. I felt a twinge of excitement that I might have stumbled across some superhuman ability of which I was previously unaware.

I felt both excited and confused however. I was still unsure of the reason why the imaginative figures from my mind were related to the triangles in my dream, and furthermore how these triangles were tied to the magic possessed by the likes of

those spiritual masters.

My first realisation was that all triangles had three points and three sides. Blaringly obvious, the connection made sense, for not only did clairvoyants, gurus and shaman see geometric shapes such as triangles in their trances, but the number

three was and, as far as I’m aware, still is the magic number.

So I started to research the number; it cropped up everywhere. First with Plato, who saw it as symbolic of the triangle; he even considered the world to have been built from triangles. If Plato had thought this, I guessed,

both number and shape must have held large significance in history books. So I looked further and found that in Greek mythology figureheads tended to come in multiples of three, like Cerberus, for example, a three-

headed dog.

It was curious also that folk tales followed suit; there were the Three Little Pigs, The Three Wishes, The Three Bears and The Three Blind Mice. In religion you couldn’t fail to miss it since it was everywhere.

In ancient Babylon, Anu, Bel, and Ea, were the three primary gods, who represented Heaven, Earth, and the Abyss. Similarly, there were three aspects to the Egyptian Sun God: Khepri (rising), Re

(midday), and Atum (setting). In Christianity you have the Holy Trinity of God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Jesus rose on the third day and there were three wise men.

I then looked at astronomy and had to wonder… was it just coincidence that we were living on the third rock from the sun? I have yet to discover what all this means. Descartes talked

of dualism, of the ghost in the machine; he didn’t mention anything about threes. So I guess it’s up to me. Clearly I have received the Shaman’s calling. For the foreseeable

future I shall be sitting on top of a rounded triangle (or a hill, if you like) pondering this mystery. Feel free to drop by with existential questions... and sandwiches. Cut in

triangles, of course.

Así que empecé a investigar el número; salía en todas partes. Primero con Platón, que lo veía como la simbología del triángulo; incluso llegó a pensar que el mundo estaba hecho de triángulos. Y, si Platón cayó en la cuenta de esto - pensé - el número y la forma deben haber estado muy presentes en los libros de historia. Así que seguí con mis pesquisas y descubrí que en la mitología griega los elementos tenían tendencia a venir en múltiplos de tres (sirva de ejemplo Cerbero, un perro con tres cabezas).

También era curioso que le habían seguido los cuentos populares: Los tres cerditos, los tres deseos, los tres osos y los tres ratones negros. Y en la religión tampoco puedes evitar fijarte, más que nada porque está por todas partes. En la antigua Babilonia, Anu, Bel y Ea eran los tres dioses principales que representaban respectivamente el cielo, la tierra y el abismo. Lo mismo sucedía con el dios egipcio del sol: Khepri (amanecer), Re (mediodía) y Atum (ocaso). Los cristianos tienen La Santa Trinidad: El Padre, El Hijo y El Espíritu Santo. Jesús resucitó al tercer día y aparecieron tres hombres sabios.

Entonces, le eché un vistazo a la astronomía y me tuve que preguntar... ¿es casualidad que seamos el tercer planeta del sistema solar? Todavía tengo que descubrir el significado tras eso. Descartes hablaba de dualismo, del genio maligno; no decía nada del número tres. Así que depende de mí. Está claro que he recibido la llamada del chamán. En un futuro cercano estaré sentado en lo alto de un triángulo redondeado (es decir, una colina) debatiéndome sobre este misterio. Cuando queráis podéis pasaros por aquí con preguntas existenciales... y sándwiches.

PATRONES DE PENSAMIENTOS EXTRAÑOS Strange

shapes darted past my mind like luminous fighter jets in the darkness. I was half awake, motionless yet floating,

apparently unsupported, in a vast pool of nothingness. Having disappeared, the shapes returned as if swung on an axis from the centre of my mind. Splintered colours spun away like reeling dancers in the night, then recoiled as though attached by spaghetti-like lengths

of rubber band.

Eventually, they collided to form a single triangle in the centre of my vision, magnificently bright and brilliant. No sooner had they merged, they began to break apart, this time into smaller fragments. There was a short burst of intense light and I woke up, thinking, more than I have ever

thought before, about triangles.

I thought of Pink Floyd’s cover to Dark Side Of The Moon, of the Pyramids, of Bermuda and all its mystery, the Illuminati, three wheeled cars, river deltas and mathematics. Strange what the mind is capable of first thing in the morning… Anyway, I was intrigued. A cold shower

wrenched me from my daze, but the dream did not leave me.

It was not until I met a friend later that my visions were brought to some light; he told me about others who had seen geometric shapes in dreamlike states, and that such people were thought to be connected in one way or another with the spirit world. Vivid images

of humming Gurus, entranced Shaman and hysterical clairvoyants played teasingly at the forefront of my mind. I felt a twinge of excitement that I might have stumbled across some superhuman ability of which I was previously unaware.

I felt both excited and confused however. I was still unsure of the reason why the imaginative figures from my mind were related to the triangles in my dream, and furthermore how these triangles were tied to the magic possessed by the likes of

those spiritual masters.

My first realisation was that all triangles had three points and three sides. Blaringly obvious, the connection made sense, for not only did clairvoyants, gurus and shaman see geometric shapes such as triangles in their trances, but the number

three was and, as far as I’m aware, still is the magic number.

So I started to research the number; it cropped up everywhere. First with Plato, who saw it as symbolic of the triangle; he even considered the world to have been built from triangles. If Plato had thought this, I guessed,

both number and shape must have held large significance in history books. So I looked further and found that in Greek mythology figureheads tended to come in multiples of three, like Cerberus, for example, a three-

headed dog.

It was curious also that folk tales followed suit; there were the Three Little Pigs, The Three Wishes, The Three Bears and The Three Blind Mice. In religion you couldn’t fail to miss it since it was everywhere.

In ancient Babylon, Anu, Bel, and Ea, were the three primary gods, who represented Heaven, Earth, and the Abyss. Similarly, there were three aspects to the Egyptian Sun God: Khepri (rising), Re

(midday), and Atum (setting). In Christianity you have the Holy Trinity of God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Jesus rose on the third day and there were three wise men.

I then looked at astronomy and had to wonder… was it just coincidence that we were living on the third rock from the sun? I have yet to discover what all this means. Descartes talked

of dualism, of the ghost in the machine; he didn’t mention anything about threes. So I guess it’s up to me. Clearly I have received the Shaman’s calling. For the foreseeable

future I shall be sitting on top of a rounded triangle (or a hill, if you like) pondering this mystery. Feel free to drop by with existential questions... and sandwiches. Cut in

Gracias a una ingeniosa investigación llevada a cabo por los chicos de la Sección de Mecánica Cuántica secreta de Relevant (SMC), hemos tenido acceso a unos equipos de última generación y, francamente, son bastante guapos. La última creación de genio científico ha sido nuestro CompresordeTiempo©, el cual hace exactamente lo que pone en la caja: coge el tiempo y... ¡lo comprime!

Así que, dependiendo del uso que se le quiera dar, una semana puede durar un minuto, una década sólo un año o, si se quisiera, se podría disponer de todo el tiempo del mundo para visitar cada una de las casas del mundo/deslizarse por la chimenea/entrar utilizando la llave que ingenuamente se ha colocado bajo la maceta junto a la puerta principal/abrir una ventana a la fuerza/aparecer de forma mágica en el salón y dejar un regalo... podrías comprimir todo ese tiempo en una sola noche.

Con el CompresordeTiempo©, el SMC básicamente ha conseguido la Noel-Tecnología, dándome la tan ansiada oportunidad de poder ponerme al fin ese fantástico abrigo rojo - nada parecido al traje con pelo que te estás imaginando; este traje es un traje de Papá Noel postmoderno de Matrix, hecho del cuero rojo más resistente; un cuero tan añejo que el material orgánico del que se compone ha vuelto a cobrar vida, ha evolucionado y seguramente se acabaría comiendo el pelo de verse las caras con él - y adentrarme en los cielos nocturnos en mi silenciosa y voladora Harley (gracias de nuevo, SMC) portando regalos para unos pocos afortunados.

Excepto que “afortunado” probablemente no sea la mejor forma de describir lo que la gente de mi lista va a sentir por la mañana. Y es que mi lista “traviesa, pero agradable” ni siquiera tiene una sola columna y la mayoría de las cosas que contiene mi saco de Papá Noel no son de las que te gustaría desenvolver una mañana de Navidad, a menos que sufras de insuficiencia crónica del intestino grueso y necesites un poco de inspiración.

Hasta ahora ha sido una noche divertida. He dejado un poquito de caca envuelta en papel brillante para todos los miembros del comité de La

Alianza de Estándares de Anuncios Europeos (EASA, por sus siglas en inglés). Por si te lo estás preguntando - seguramente lo estés, ya que jamás habrás podido comprobar que existen - son la gente que nos protege a nosotros, los valiosísimos consumidores, de las mentiras que las grandes empresas utilizan para manipularnos y obtener el dinero que se nos ha asignado arbitrariamente para distraernos de todo lo que nos rodea (aunque este tema en concreto, parafraseando a Bill Hicks, es más de reunión clandestina de medianoche en el muelle). Llámame blandengue, pero creo que el nivel de implicación de La EASA merece ser reconocido.

También he dejado caer una cabeza de caballo amputada en la cama de Berlusconi; he plantado la semilla que algún día provocará la excomunión chocante y humilladora de Tony Blair de la iglesia católica (estoy poniendo mi granito de arena para evitarle un futuro particularmente siniestro a la humanidad - ver el número 17 de Relevant); y en la oficina del Consejero Delegado de McDonald’s he dejado dos kilos de comida de gato podrida envuelta en la vejiga de una oveja vieja.

¡Y la noche acaba de empezar! Todavía hay que acudir al jovencito George Bush (le voy a inyectar un pigmento químico especial que le hará negro antes de finales de marzo; Lady Gaga (he invocado a un diablillo del infierno para que le meta un dedo en el ojo), Tom Cruise (que va a conocer a un auténtico extraterrestre, excepto que éste le va a señalar constantemente y se va a reír), y una cuidada selección de otros peleles y chalados varios que merecen una bofetada en la cara o una buena patada en el culo. Jamás pude pensar que dar sentaría tan bien.

Y, sí... La Navidad de este año va a ser realmente feliz. ¡Jo-Jo-Jo-Jonzo!

Thanks to some nifty research by the guys at Relevant’s secret Quantum Mechanics Division (QMD), we have access to some pretty state-of-the-art -and frankly far out - equipment. The latest piece of scientific genius has been the TimeCompressor©, which does exactly what is says on the box. It takes Time... and Compresses it.

So, depending on the setting you give it, a week can take a minute, a decade a year, or, if you wanted to, you could take the time needed to visit every household in the world, slip down a chimney/enter using the spare key foolishly kept under the flowerpot beside the front door/force open a window/materialize magically in the living room and leave a gift... you could take that time and compress into one night.

Basically, what QMD have given us with the TimeCompressor© is Santa-Tech, which gives me the long wished-for chance to finally don that great red coat - none of your fur trimming, mind; this is the post-modern Matrix Santa coat, wrought from the toughest red leather, leather that’s been around so long the organic material from which it was fashioned has come back to life, evolved sentience and would, if faced with fur trimming, most likely eat it - and head out into the night sky on my customised flying stealth Harley (thanks again, QMD!), bearing gifts for the fortunate few.

Except fortunate probably isn’t how I’d best describe what the folk on my list are going to be feeling in the morning. See, my ‘naughty and nice’ list doesn’t even have a nice column and most of what I have in my Santa-sack isn’t anything you’d want to unwrap on Christmas morning unless you were suffering from chronic bowel-blockage and really needed some inspiration.

It’s been a fun evening so far. I’ve left a brightly-wrapped parcel of poop for everyone on the board of the European Advertising Standards Alliance. In case you’re wondering (which you probably are since you won’t have actually seen any evidence of their existence) those are the people that protect us, the valued consumers, from being exposed to the lies big business uses to manipulate us into giving it the money we’ve been arbitrarily apportioned to distract us all from evolving (that particular subject though, to paraphrase Bill Hicks, is for a more clandestine midnight meeting by the docks). Call me an old softy, but I thought the EASA’s degree of dedication to duty deserved to be recognised.

I’ve also dropped off a severed horse’s head in Berlusconi’s bed; planted the seed that will eventually develop into the shocking, and humiliating, excommunication of Tony Blair from the catholic church (doing my bit to help prevent a particularly dark future for mankind - see issue 17); and I’ve left two kilos of rotten cat food wrapped in an old sheep’s bladder in the fridge of McDonalds’ chief executive.

And the evening’s only just begun! There’s still young George Bush to go (I’m going to inject him with a special pigmentation chemical that will turn him black by the end of March), Lady Gaga (I’ve summoned an imp from Hell to poke her face),

Tom Cruise (he’s going to meet a real extra-terrestrial; except this one’s going to point at him all the time and laugh), and a whole host of other gonks and nut-jobs deserving of a slap in the face or a kick up the arse. I never knew giving could feel so good.

Yep, this year, it really is going to be a very merry Christmas.
