Technical Data & Application InstructionsPRODUCT DESCRIPTIONELASTUFF 120 is a two-component, 100% solidspolyurethane elastomer coating containing no moca orfillers, such as clay or mica. It is designed for protectingsurfaces subject to abrasion in aqueous solutions orenvironments, including water, salt water, various slur-ry systems, and numerous acid and base solutions. It isequally effective under dry abrasive and/or corrosiveenvironments.

ELASTUFF 120 is a highly crosslinked polymer coat-ing, yielding a dense, tight finish. Its non-porous sur-face and excellent hydrolytic stability makeELASTUFF 120 an excellent barrier to corrosion. Thehigh tensile strength of ELASTUFF 120 contributes toits resistance to abrasion and tearing. This toughness, combined with its elongation properties, also results inoutstanding flexibility and impact resistance.ELASTUFF 120 is a solventless system enabling fast,high-build coats without solvent entrapment. It is avail-able in Spray Grade or Roller Grade versions, which, along with ELASTUFF 120 Mastic, are classified byUL in accordance with ANSI/NSF61, Section 5, BarrierMaterials.

BASIC USESELASTUFF 120 is used over a wide variety of verticaland horizontal primed concrete, steel, iron, wood, fiber-glass and polyurethane foam surfaces. Typical applica-tions include interior tank lining, waste/water contain-ment, sewer manholes, flumes, reservoirs, coolingtower basins, valves, interior pipe and other areas sub-jected to aqueous chemical environments.

The vertical hold attained by ELASTUFF 120 gives itthe ability to uniformly cover coarse or pitted concreteas well as weld seams, bolts, angles and edges, and otherirregular surfaces. Film builds from 10 to 250 mils andbeyond can be achieved in one coat using multiple passspray technique. For surfaces exhibiting rough textureor minor spalling, as well as surfaces exposed to seismicactivity, settling or other movement, ELASTUFF 120 isavailable in an expanded version. ELASTUFF 120X3rises and cures to a thickness approximately 3 times itsliquid applied thickness. For applications requiringadditional hardness, ELASTUFF 120 is available in ahigh durometer version, ELASTUFF 125, which has ahardness of 60-65 Shore D at 75°F (24°C).

pplication Instructions(Supercedes F

ebruary, 2003)

All surfaces shall be dry and clean, free from any dirt, grease, oil, pollution fallout, smoke, wax, form releaseagents, surface chemicals, or other foreign contami-nants that could interfere with proper adhesion.Surfaces shall be free of sharp projections, ridges andloose aggregate. The actual surface preparation procedures that are to befollowed on a specific project will vary depending uponservice conditions, condition of the substrate, and thepresence of existing paints, coatings or other contami-nants. For this reason, it is recommended thatUNITED’S Technical Service Department be contactedprior to starting any work. The following surface prepa-ration procedures and recommendations are provided forguideline use only.

STEEL SURFACES:Steel must free of excessive rust scale, pollution fallout, dirt, grease, surface chemicals or other foreign contam-inants prior to blast cleaning. A careful examination mustbe made to ensure that these contaminants, along withany accumulated oil, smoke, wax, or any other materialthat could interfere with adhesion has been removed. This should be accomplished by use of a solvent washas defined in SSPC-SP1 Solvent Cleaning. All sharpedges, welds, weld spatter, burrs and any other sharpprominence shall be ground smooth. Excessive rustscale shall be removed by mechanical means prior toblast cleaning. On steel tank lining applications, allseams and joints must have a continuous, smooth interi-or weld.Steel surfaces subject to immersion conditions must beblast cleaned to White Metal (SSPC-SP5) with a mini-mum anchor profile of 2+ mils (51+ microns). Steelsubject to non-immersion conditions shall be cleaned toNear-White (SSPC-SP10) with a minimum anchor pro-file of 2.0 mils (51 microns). The proper profile isrequired to assure optimum adhesion of theELASTUFF 120 coating system.Abrasive blast cleaning shall not be performed whensurface temperature of the steel is less than 5°F (3°C)above the dew point of the ambient air, or where thereis a possibility that the blasted surface will become wetbefore the primer can be applied. The blast cleaned surface shall be primed by the end ofthe same work day, but in any event before any visiblerusting occurs. If rusting occurs after blast cleaning, thesurfaces shall be reblasted before priming.Steel surfaces shall be primed with UNITED'S Primer302 to a thickness of 1.0 to 1.5 dry mils (25 to 38microns), depending upon surface profile. For details ofapplication refer to separate literature entitled Primer302 Technical Data and Application Instructions. Allowa minimum of 30 minutes dry time at 75°F (24°C)between application of Primer 302 and the application ofELASTUFF 120. Primed areas should be topcoatedwithin 48 hours, although the Primer 302 does have anextended open time. If contamination of any kind occurson the primed surface, it must be removed prior to apply-ing the ELASTUFF 120. Spot priming or repriming maybe required depending upon the length of exposure.

CONCRETE SURFACES:Concrete that will be subject to immersion conditionsmust be blast cleaned. Concrete subject to non-immersionconditions can either be blast cleaned to roughen the sur-face or acid etched, so long as the etching provides aneven profile of 5 to 8 mils (127 to 203 microns). The sur-face preparation utilized must remove all loose, weak orpowdery concrete to expose all voids and provide thenecessary profile for mechanical adhesion of theELASTUFF 120.Concrete surfaces that are contaminated with oil, grease, dirt, chemicals, etc. shall be cleaned prior to blasting oracid etching with United Cleaning Concentrate (UCC),or other approved biodegradable chemical cleaner andwater. Cleaning shall be accomplished using mechanicalscrubbers and/or high pressure power washing equipmentas necessary to remove strongly adhering contaminants.Rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of the UCC cleaner. When blasting, use an abrasive grit or sand of the typeand gradation required to provide a minimum surfaceheight profile of 5 to 8 mils (127 to 203 microns).Blasting must produce an even profile. After blasting, all grit, dust, loose material, dirt and foreign objectsshall be removed by sweeping or vacuuming.Acid etching shall be accomplished using a 10% Muriaticacid solution. The diluted acid solution shall be sprinkledonto the concrete surface. After the solution has stoppedbubbling or foaming (normally 5 to 10 minutes), the areashall be scrubbed thoroughly by hand or by usingmechanical scrubbers. After scrubbing, all surfaces shallbe thoroughly rinsed with liberal amounts of fresh waterto assure complete acid removal. Surfaces may requireadditional rinsing or a high pressure rinse to remove alltraces of the acid solution.Any resurfacing or repairs necessary to achieve asound, consistent surface, free of bugholes, voids, cracks or spalling shall be completed prior to priming.Use UNITED'S Uni-Crete to fill voids and bugholes, and to resurface spalled or rough surface areas.Blasting or acid etching is not necessary over surfacesthat have been repaired with Uni-Crete. Refer to Uni-Crete Technical Data & Application Instructions foradditional information. Use epoxy injection, urethanecaulk or other appropriate patching material for repair-ing cracks and/or large voids in the concrete surface.Patching and/or crack repair shall be completed in strictaccordance with manufacturer’s recommendations. After repairs are completed and adequately cured, con-crete surfaces shall be primed with one (1) coat ofUNITED'S Uni-Tile Sealer. Sealer shall be applied byairless spray or roller at the rate of 250 sq. ft. per gal-lon (6.1 m²/l). For details refer to Uni-Tile SealerTechnical Data & Application Instructions. Allow aminimum of 30 minutes dry time at 75°F (24°C)between application of Uni-Tile Sealer and the appli-cation of ELASTUFF 120. Colder temperatures willrequire additional dry time. Sealer should be topcoatedwithin 24 hours, and should under no circumstances beleft exposed longer than 48 hours.

SURFACE PREPARATION

ELASTUFF 120 Spray Grade is applied using 1:1ratio plural component airless spray equipment. Refer toseparate literature entitled Plural Component SprayEquipment for information on design and operation.ELASTUFF 120 Roller Grade can be applied using aroller, squeegee, trowel, mitt or brush.ELASTUFF 120 shall be applied to concrete surfacesthat have been previously primed with Uni-Tile Sealeror steel surfaces previously primed with Primer 302. Itcan also be applied to fiberglass or wood surfaces pre-viously primed with Uni-Tile Sealer or to polyurethanefoam or expanded polystyrene (EPS) surfaces with noprimer required. All preparation work, including treat-ment of cracks, surface repairs, etc. must have beencompleted in accordance with UNITED’S publishedrecommendations. Do not apply ELASTUFF 120 whenambient temperature is below 40°F (4°C) or above100°F (38°C), if rain is anticipated within 2 hours ofapplication or if the relative humidity is over 90%.ELASTUFF 120 Roller Grade is recommended forapplication over horizontal surfaces only. Apply bypouring an “S” pattern across a 3' to 6' section of thesubstrate, then spread evenly to the desired thicknessusing a roller, squeegee or trowel. On vertical surfaces,a long-nap roller or power roller are most effective. Abrush or mitt can be used for application to small orconfined areas. When utilizing ELASTUFF 120 Spray Grade, flushMethylene Chloride or M.E.K. solvent through thepumps, hoses and spray gun prior to introducing thematerial components. One of these solvents should alsobe used to fill the solvent flush system, which must beset so as to achieve a minimum of 800 psi (5,512 kPa)fluid pressure. Set transfer pumps at the minimum pres-sure required to completely fill the proportioning cylin-ders as they cycle so that no cavitation occurs. This willtypically require 200 to 300 psi (1,378 to 2,069 kPa)fluid pressure. Set main proportioning pump at 2,100 to2,800 psi (14,469 to 19,292 kPa) fluid pressure toachieve an acceptable spray pattern, depending upontip size, material temperature and ambient conditions.Plural component equipment must be equipped with in-line, high pressure heaters as well as heated, insulatedhigh pressure hose capable of developing and maintain-ing a minimum of 120°F (49°C) material temperature atthe spray gun. In cooler ambient conditions where thematerial in the drum cannot be maintained at 60°F(16°C) or higher, it is recommended that drum heaters beutilized to facilitate easier pumping of the liquid compo-nents by the transfer pumps.Utilize an approved plural component gun equipped witha static mixer, or a single component gun with a staticmixer in conjunction with a manifold and up to a 20 ft.(6 m) whip to assure proper mixing and cure of the liq-uid components. A spray tip between .025" and .041" (.6to 1 mm) with a 40° to 50° fan pattern is recommended.Coverage rates and dry mils are determined by specificproject requirements. The versatility of ELASTUFF120 allows the specifying engineer to solve a multitudeof protection problems utilizing one coating system at awide range of dry mil thickness. Contact UNITEDCOATINGS’ Technical Service Department for specificproject recommendations.

ELASTUFF 120 applied at the coverage rate of onegallon per 100 sq. ft. (.4 l/m²) of the combined Part Aand Part B will theoretically yield 16.0 dry mils [406dry microns]. The following dry mil thicknesses are pro-vide for guideline use only for typical applications.

Light Abrasion – Dry or Immersion32 to 40 mils (813 to 1,016 microns)Medium Abrasion – Dry or Immersion45 to 60 mils (1,143 to 1,524 microns)Heavy Abrasion – Dry or Immersion80 to 120+ mils (2,032 to 3,048+ microns)

The applicator must periodically check the number ofgallons used compared to square feet coated. If ade-quate gallonage has not been used according toUNITED’S published recommendations or projectspecifications, adjust accordingly and apply additionalmaterial to previously coated areas.ELASTUFF 120 Spray Grade is capable of rapid, high film build utilizing multiple-pass application tech-nique. Most required film builds can be achieved in oneor two applications using this method. Ultra-high filmbuilds may require three or more separate coats.ELASTUFF 120 Roller Grade will require more coatsthan the Spray Grade to achieve the same millage. Thenumber of coats required to achieve the specified filmthickness will vary depending on application method, jobsite and ambient conditions. Allow each coat ofELASTUFF 120 to dry tack free prior to applying anadditional coat. This will require a minimum of ½ hourfor the Spray Grade and 6 hours for the Roller Gradeat 75°F (24°C).All surfaces must be uniformly coated and free ofvoids, pinholes or blisters. When spray applyingELASTUFF 120 Spray Grade over rough concrete orother highly textured surfaces, it is often helpful totrowel or backroll the material immediately after apply-ing it to the substrate. A void-free, monolithic film canbe achieved with less material by using this technique.A polyester or fiberglass mesh can also be embeddedinto the first coat of ELASTUFF 120 to help cover andreinforce large cracks, seams or voids. Open time forthe Spray Grade material for troweling, backrolling orembedding fabric is thirty to ninety seconds dependingupon jobsite conditions. An optional method for resurfacing rough substrates, voids, minor spalling or other surface imperfections, orfor achieving higher film build is to utilizeELASTUFF 120X3. Refer to specific section on page4 for additional information on this expanded basecoatformulation.ELASTUFF 120 is self-flashing at natural terminationpoints such as expansion joints, corners, edges,counter-flashings, tank wall caps, etc. Coated areas thatdo not tie into a natural termination must be sawcutaround the perimeter to a minimum of ¼ inch (6 mm).The coating shall then be applied so as to flow into andterminate at the saw cut.The ELASTUFF 120 coating must be inspected assoon as practical to ensure that all surfaces have beenuniformly coated and are free of holidays.

COATING APPLICATION

ELASTUFF 120X3ELASTUFF 120X3 is an effective method of obtain-ing a monolithic, pinhole free film over rough concreteor other textured surfaces. Because it expands andcures to approximately three times its wet film thick-ness, ELASTUFF 120X3 is able to fill and cover roughtextured substrates. It can also be used for bridgingcracks up to ½" (1.3 cm), and for building film thick-ness at corners and edges, control joints, vertical/hori-zontal seams and transitions between dissimilar sub-strates or for any applications requiring a high filmbuild.ELASTUFF 120X3 is applied using standard pluralcomponent equipment. It is for use as a basecoat onlyand must always be topcoated with a minimum of 30mils of standard ELASTUFF 120. Consult UNITED’STechnical Service Department for specific project rec-ommendations. Allow ELASTUFF 120X3 to cure 10to 15 hours prior to topcoating, but do not exceed 48hours.

TOPCOAT APPLICATIONELASTUFF 120 is designed as a functional coatingsystem and will lose its sheen and chalk slightly afterextended exterior exposure. It is recommended thatELASTUFF 120 be topcoated in areas where aesthet-ics are of prime importance, or when a color other thenstandard Gray is desired.Uniflex 255, or Elastuff 102, 200, 210 or 220 are typ-ically used as topcoats. Consult separate Technical Data& Application Instructions for additional informationor contact UNITED’S Technical Service Departmentfor specific topcoat recommendations.

PACKAGING & MIXINGELASTUFF 120 is a two-component material availablein 5-gallon (19 liter) pails and 55-gallon (208 liter)drums. The Part A component is Clear, the Part B com-ponent is Gray. Mix each container with a power mixeruntil the material is of uniform consistency. Blend equalparts of the Part A and Part B Roller Grade componentsin a separate container. The Spray Grade componentsare blended when pumped under high pressure throughthe plural component equipment equipped with a staticmixer. When properly metered and mixed, both formu-lations will yield the standard Gray color.

CLEANUPClean equipment with Methylene Chloride or M.E.K. Donot leave Methylene Chloride in fluid hoses or pumps forprolonged periods. It can cause swelling and deteriorationof hoses and corrosion in the pump.

SHELF LIFE & STORAGEShelf life of Part A and Part B components in unopenedcontainers is 6 Months from date of shipment fromUNITED’S factory. If shelf life has expired, contactUNITED’S Technical Service Department beforeattempting to utilize the material.Material must be stored at temperatures between 50°Fand 100°F (10°C and 38°C). Do not open containersuntil ready to use the material.

LIMITATIONS & PRECAUTIONSELASTUFF 120 components are affected by moistureprior to catalyzation and must be protected from moisturecontamination. Keep all containers tightly closed duringstorage. Containers are factory sealed with an inert gas toprevent contamination. After opening and if all componentsare not to be used, containers must be purged with nitrogengas or dry air and tightly sealed to protect the componentsfrom moisture contamination.Ambient temperature range for application is from40°F to 100°F (4°C to 43°C). ELASTUFF 120 may beapplied in high humidity conditions up to 90% R.H. In-service temperature limits will vary depending upon theapplication conditions. For heat exposure limits contactUNITED’S Technical Service Department for recom-mendations on specific liquids.Only ELASTUFF 120 Spray Grade and RollerGrade are classified in accordance with ANSI/NSF 61.Other components, such as primers and topcoats thatmay be required as part of a potable water application, must also be certified. In addition ANSI/NSF 61 certi-fication includes application parameters regarding min-imum tank size, maximum film thickness and mini-mum temperature (@ 50% R.H). No solvents may beused as a thinner, and if used as a solvent purge, it mustnot be discharged onto the lining. Refer to ULDirectory or contact UNITED’S Technical ServiceDepartment for additional information. The theoretical film thickness given at specific cover-age rates is based on smooth, non-porous surfaces.Actual gallons required in the field to achieve the min-imum dry film thickness will depend upon the surfacetexture, ambient weather conditions and spray tech-nique of the applicator. It is the responsibility of theapplicator to apply sufficient material to achieve theminimum dry film thickness.Use only in a well ventilated area. Avoid breathing ofvapor or spray mist. For exterior applications, approved(MSHA/NIOSH) chemical cartridge respirator must beworn by applicator and personnel in vicinity of appli-cation. If used indoors, provide mechanical exhaustventilation. During indoor spray operations, air linemasks or positive pressure hose masks must be worn.Avoid contact with eyes and contact with skin. For additional information on safety requirements, refer toOSHA guidelines and ELASTUFF 120 Material SafetyData Sheet.

Shelf life of Part A and Part B components inunopened containers is 2 years. Store at temperaturesbetween 50°F and 100°F (10°C to 38°C). Do not opencontainers until ready to use the material.

SURFACE PREPARATIONAll surfaces must be clean and dry, and free of anydirt, oil, grease, soapy films, release or curing agents, surface chemicals or other foreign contaminants.UNITED recommends that new concrete be water-cured in lieu of using a curing compound.

Prior to applying UNI-TILE SEALER LV, all loosematerial, dirt and dust shall be removed by use of apower vacuum. If concrete is badly spalled, restoreloose aggregate to a reasonable condition utilizingUNITED’S Uni-Crete.

New concrete that has been previously cured with acuring compound shall be cleaned prior to acid etchingwith a proper chemical solvent. Follow directions andsafety precautions on label.

New concrete shall be cleaned and etched with 10%Muriatic Acid Solution. Dilute in proportion of 1 partacid to 8 to 10 parts clean water. Muriatic AcidSolution shall be sprinkled onto the concrete surface. After the solution has stopped bubbling or foaming(normally 5 to 10 minutes), the area shall then bescrubbed thoroughly by hand or by using mechanicalscrubbers. After scrubbing, surfaces shall then bethoroughly rinsed with liberal amounts of fresh water. The surface may require additional rinsing or a highpressure water rinse to remove all traces of the acidsolution.

Concrete surfaces that are contaminated with oil, grease, dirt, etc., shall be cleaned using UnitedCleaning Concentrate (UCC) and water. Cleaningshall be accomplished using mechanical scrubbers.Rinse thoroughly with fresh water to remove all tracesof the UCC cleaner.

APPLICATIONUNI-TILE SEALER LV may be applied by brush, roller or spray. Airless spray is the preferredmethod. Any airless spray equipment capable of1,000 psi (6,890 kPa) and ½ gallon per minute (1.9l/minute) delivery can be used. A reversible self-cleaning spray tip with orifice size of .015" to .025"(.38 mm to .64 mm) and minimum 40 degree fanangle is recommended. For maximum production onlarge projects, airless spray equipment capable of2,000 psi (13,790 kPa) and 1 gallon per minute (3.8l/minute) delivery can be used.

Before spraying, flush Xylol or Methyl EthylKetone (MEK) solvent through the hoses and spraygun to prevent contamination.

Coverage rate will vary depending upon surfaceporosity. One coat is usually sufficient for sealing ofconcrete and wood surfaces prior to topcoating. Twocoats may be required if the substrate is extremelyporous or when the UNI-TILE SEALER LV isbeing used on its own as a floor sealer. Apply UNI-TILE SEALER LV at the following approximaterates:

Concrete: 400 to 500 sq. ft./gallon (9.8 to 12.2 m²/l)Wood: 500 sq. ft./gallon (12.2 m²/l)Lightweight Concrete: 200 to 250 sq. ft./gallon (4.9

to 6.1 m²/l)

UNI-TILE SEALER LV should be topcoated, ifappropriate, within 24 hours of application. At notime shall any topcoat be applied after 48 hoursfollowing application, as it will not achieve a chemicalbond with the UNI-TILE SEALER LV.

Clean equipment with Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK).

LIMITATIONS & PRECAUTIONSUNI-TILE SEALER LV is a thin penetrating sealer.Do not use as a high-build surface coating. Substratetemperature must be a minimum of 50°F (10°C).

UNI-TILE SEALER LV has been tested for chemicalresistance against many common industrialchemical cleaners and solvents. For floors subjectedto acids or unusual chemical spillage, consultUNITED’S Technical Service Department forrecommendations.

Solvents in UNI-TILE SEALER LV are flammable.Use only in a well ventilated area. Keep away fromheat, sparks, open flame, or lighted cigarettes. Useexplosion-proof application equipment that has beengrounded and bonded. Avoid prolonged or repeatedbreathing of vapor or spray mist. Approved(MSHA/NIOSH) chemical cartridge respirator shouldbe worn by applicator. Avoid contact with eyes andcontact with skin.
