COMPARTIENDO CONOCIMIENTOS, MEJORANDO LA CALIDAD• María Isabel Rodríguez se caracteriza por tener las cualidades de

conocimiento de una biblioteca y una larga trayectoria en desarrollo de recursos humanos para la salud y la investigación que utiliza para fundamentar las decisiones políticas. Una rica fuente de conocimiento es la clave para difundir su entendimiento a todos y cada uno sin perjuicio o favorecimiento; para luego utilizar este conocimiento en la mejora de la calidad de la asistencia sanitaria. Ella se ve sobre un libro que representa su comprensión personal de la salud y de éste salen revoloteando miles de pequeños libros con los frutos de su sabiduría. Estos últimos se abren camino a todos los rincones de las Américas y del mundo, que se proyecta como una sombra sobre su rostro. El patrón de anillo hecho por los libros, y su lugar dentro de él, traen a la mente el símbolo de la información. Sumado a esto, la cruz que se forma cuando el libro corta el tronco de un árbol evoca el símbolo de género para las mujeres, lo que refleja sus logros en convertirse en la primera mujer decana de la facultad de medicina de la Universidad de El Salvador. Sus raíces y la importancia para el pueblo de El Salvador se ven reforzadas por la silueta del ave nacional de su país, el Torogoz, posado junto a la cuenta abierta de su vasto conocimiento.

SHARING KNOWLEDGE, IMPROVING QUALITY• Maria Isabel Rodriguez, with her long career developing human resources

for health and using research to inform policy decisions, is characterized in this image as having the qualities of a library. A rich source of knowledge, a key means to disseminate understanding to any and all without prejudice or favor, then using this knowledge to enhance the quality of healthcare. She looks out over a book representing her personal understanding of healthcare and from this thousands of smaller books flutter and fly the fruits of her wisdom making their ways to every corner of the Americas and indeed the world, which is depicted through the shadows across her face. The ring pattern made by the books, and her place within it, bring to mind an information symbol. Added to this the cross made as the book bisects the tree stump evokes the gender symbol for women, reflecting her achievement in becoming the first woman dean of the faculty of medicine at the University of El Salvador. Her roots and importance to the people of El Salvador are further reinforced by the silhouette of her country's national bird the Torogoz perched beside the open account of her vast knowledge.www.paho.org/arteparalainvestigacion

DE PIE FRENTE AL POLIO • El Dr. Ciro de Quadros se presenta bajo una representación del

símbolo universal de riesgo biológico, cada uno de cuyos mortalesbrazos sostienen una soga de verdugo. La soga en cada casorepresenta la muerte producida por la infección. No obstante, cuando el Dr. de Quadros y su investigación sobre lasenfermedades infecciosas está presente, la soga del verdugo se rompe y por lo tanto el riesgo desaparece. La cuerda cuelgadirectamente delante de los ojos de Quadros, lo cual nos muestra la cercana relación que él tiene con su tema y qué tan profundo es suconocimiento, pero también nos recuerda que las enfermedadesinfecciosas están siempre delante de nuestros ojos. El desoladotronco vacío, a la derecha de la imagen, detrás de la letal cuerdacompleta, nos muestra cuál sería la alternativa si no se hicierantrabajos como el del Dr. de Quadros.

STANDING UP TO POLIO • Dr. Ciro de Quadros is presented beneath a representation of the

universal biohazard symbol from which extend two deathly arms each holding a hangman's noose. The noose in each case represents death from infection. However, where Dr. de Quadros and his research on infectious disease is present, the hangman'snoose lies broken and therefore posing no threat. The rope hangsdirectly in front of de Quadros' eyes, showing us how close a relationship he has with his subject matter, how intimate his knowledge is, but also reminding us that infectious diseases arealways in front of our eyes. The empty, bleak tree stump on the right of the picture, behind the complete and lethal noose, describes to us the alternative if work like that of de Quadros is not done.

UNA RISA SANA• Para Patch Adams el cuidado médico está muy relacionado con la

experiencia que vive el paciente. Aquí vemos su característico humor, la creatividad y la alegría, que en su visión de la asistencia sanitaria son esenciales e integrales al proceso de curación. Los métodos alternativosde entrega de información de atención primaria de Patch Adams hantenido un gran éxito en algunas partes del mundo donde los métodostradicionales de la educación hasta ahora han fracasado. En la parte superior está el asiento más cómodo en la casa, reservado para el paciente. Se trata de hacer que el paciente esté tan cómodo y feliz comosea posible, durante lo que Patch Adams describe como el peor momentode sus vidas. Sobre la base de resultados de la investigación, Patch dibujauna imagen de la asistencia sanitaria diferente. ¿Podría ser que al estar un día en el hospital trate de pasar el mejor momento de su vida, en lugar de pensar en cuánto le queda? La excavadora a nivel de la tierrarepresentaría las ideas viejas y anticuadas que una vez se tuvieron sobrela asistencia sanitaria. Pero esto no se puede hacer sin antes escucharcon atención lo que se necesita para reemplazarlas. Por esto es queflorecen de la oreja de Patch nuevas formas coloridas de hacer las cosas. Investigación adicional en la asistencia sanitaria primaria podría cambiar la cara de cómo se practica la medicina y se mejora la salud y felicidad de millones de pacientes en todo el mundo.

A HEALTHY LAUGH• For Patch Adams healthcare is about the experience. Here we see his

trademarks humor, creativity, and joy, which in his vision of healthcare are essential and integral to the healing process. Patch's alternative methods of delivering primary healthcare information have had great success in parts of the world where traditional methods of education have thus far failed. Right at the top is the most comfortable seat in the house, reserved for the patient. It's all about making the patient as comfortable and happy as possible during what Patch describes as being the worst time of you life. Based on research results, Patch paints a different picture of healthcare. Could being in hospital one day be all about having the time of your life, not thinking about how much of it you have left? His bulldozer levels the ground where old, worn out ideas about healthcare once stood. But this is not done without first listening carefully to what is needed to replace them. This is why the colorful sprouts of a new way grow from Patch's ear. Additional research into primary healthcare could change the face of how we practice medicine, and improve the health and happiness of millions of patients around the world.




NAVEGANDO EL CEREBRO, DESCUBRIENDO EL FUTURO• Rodolfo Llinás es un neurocientífico que ha utilizado la investigación

para ayudar a entender el cerebro y cómo el cerebro percibe "el yo". Tal es la importancia del cerebro por sí mismo que Llinás pidióque tuviera su propio árbol para este retrato. Lo sostiene en sumano derecha alzada y expuesta, revelando algo de su magia, electricidad y complejidad. Los aspectos clave de la investigaciónde Llinás están en el cerebro del calamar, que es una versiónbásica del cerebro humano. Su investigación ha llevado a unamejor comprensión de la enfermedad de Alzheimer. Los calamaresque le rodean evocan una sensación de la inmensidad del espacio. Llinás dice que no importa cuán vasto sea el espacio, el cerebroestá en el centro de nuestro universo personal. Por tanto, esimperativo que se financie más investigación sobre él. Sin inversiónen investigación, no podemos esperar progresar, no hay quepensarlo tanto.

NAVIGATING THE BRAIN, DISCOVERING OUR FUTURE• Rodolfo Llinas is a neuroscientist who has used research to help

understand the brain and how the brain perceives 'the self'. Such is the importance of the brain as an entity on its own right, that Llinasrequested that it had its own tree for this portrait. He holds it in his right hand elevated and exposed, revealing some of its magic, electricity and complexity. A key aspect of Llinas' research is on squid brains, which are basic versions of the human brain. His research has led to a better understanding of Alzheimer's disease. The squid that surround him evoke a feeling of the vastness of space. Llinas says that no matter how vast space is, our brain is at the centre of our personal universe. It is therefore imperative that we fund research into it. Without investment into research we cannot expect to progress. It's a no-brainer.




EDUCACIÓN: PRESENTADO A USTED POR LA LETRA I, PARA LA INVESTIGACIÓN

•La educación, un factor determinante de la salud y el desarrollo, hechaefectiva a través de la investigación. Lola, Elmo y el Monstruo ?Come Galletas? de Plaza Sésamo, muestran como el mundo de información, que puede verse pequeño y fuera del alcance desde la perspectiva de un niño - como se representa con el mundo en lo más alto- puede ser efectivamente ampliado, animado y convertido en conocimiento rico y colorido. El equipo de investigadores de Plaza Sésamo buscar la mejormanera de hacer llegar el mensaje a su joven público a través de la personalidad y del papel que cada personaje representa, para enriquecerla experiencia del espectador y en última instancia entregar el mensajede una manera eficiente. En esta foto se puede ver cómo después de que cada personaje basado en la investigación ha hecho su aporte, se obtienen varias perspectivas del mundo y el florecimiento de la sabiduría, representada a su vez por los globos de colores y las flores vibrantes.

EDUCATION: BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE LETTER R, FOR RESEARCH

•Plaza Sesamo's Lola, Elmo, and Cookie Monster show that a world of information, which can be small and out of reach for a young child as represented by the topmost globe, can be effectively magnified and animated into rich, colorful knowledge. Plaza Sesamo's team of researchers looks for the best way to get the message across to their young audience, and in this way each character brings his and her own personalities and roles to bear, adding to the experience of the viewer and ultimately the effectiveness of the message. In this picture you can see, after each research-based character has had their input, the product is multiple world views, and the growth of wisdom, represented in turn by the colored globes and vibrant flowers.




INNOVACIÓN A TRAVÉS DE LA CUAL EL MUNDO ESCUCHA• La Dra. Elsa Moreno ha trabajado en el campo de la medicina

perinatal y la investigación desde 1952. Uno puede ver su campo de trabajo reflejado de diversas maneras en esta obra: La pequeñaestatua de bronce de la Virgen el niño que ella vigila pertenece a la Dra. Moreno y quedó fotografiada en el retrato hecho en su casa de Tucumán, Argentina, mientras siluetas de perfil de mujeresembarazadas la rodean. La Dra Moreno promovió la adopción de alternativas eficaces, simples y accesibles para la monitorizaciónfetal, lo que mejora la calidad de la atención en contextos con recursos limitados. Las imágenes de estos instrumentos se puedenver superpuestas a lo largo de sus brazos. El manuscrito ?1952 continua ... " se repite en el texto digital detrás de la Dra. Moreno, mostrando la importancia de su trabajo en el pasado, así como susimplicaciones para el futuro.

INNOVATION THROUGH WHICH THE WORLD LISTENS• Dr. Elsa Moreno has worked in the field of perinatal medicine and

research since 1952. One can see her field reflected in various ways in this work: the Madonna and child image, a small bronze statue belonging to Dr. Moreno recorded during the portrait sitting at her home in Tucumán, Argentina that she watches over, and the silhouettes of pregnant women in profile that surround her. She has promoted the adoption of effective, simple and accessible alternatives to fetal monitoring, which enhanced the quality of care in resource-poor settings. Images of these monitors can be seen superimposed along her arms. The handwritten '1952 continua...' is repeated in digital text behind Dr. Moreno showing the importance of her work in the past as well as its implications for the future.




DESARROLLO A TRAVÉS DE LA EQUIDAD EN SALUD• Bernardo Kliksberg ha mirado de cerca la relación de la economía y la equidad. Su

investigación presenta nuevos datos que ofrece claros beneficios económicos paratodos. El resultado a largo plazo beneficia a todos en la sociedad ? tanto "los que tienen" como los "que no". Su investigación se basa en gran medida en el análisis de los datosque describen la sociedad. Esto se refleja con los maniquíes organizados en forma de pictograma. Las figuras de diferentes tamaños podrían representar grupos étnicos, la riqueza familiar, el acceso a la educación, el acceso a la asistencia sanitaria, y asísucesivamente. DEVELOPMENT THROUGH EQUITY IN HEALTH• Bernardo Kliksberg has looked closely at the relationship of economics and equity. His

research presents new data that offers clear economic benefits to all. The long term outcome is everybody in society benefits – the “haves” just as much as the “have nots.”His research relies heavily on the analysis of data describing society. This is reflected in the pictogram-like arrangements of mannequins. The different sized figures represent ethnic groupings, relative wealth, access to education, access to healthcare, and so on. Each of the orange figures raises his hand in a vote for equity. The largest, most powerful figure has succeeded in getting a hold on the benefits promised by Kliksberg'sresearch as embodied by his golden ring. However, as we are still in the aspirationalstage, this benefit has not transferred to the other members of society. The figures in the top tier have reached the stage where everyone is benefitting from an equitable society. They are wearing the gold on their heads to show that they no longer have to reach and grasp; it is theirs already but is available to everybody to enjoy. The numbers and faded feel to the figures reminds us that this will take time and has not yet been reached. The purple figures have not voted for equity. One of their number, the largest, enjoys the trappings of success but his gold is worn internally. Additional research may sway new converts, and lead to grater advances in health and economics.




NUESTRA GUÍA AL CAMINO ÉTICO• Paulina Taboada es una especialista en bioética, que utiliza la

investigación para ayudar a tratar las cuestiones de moral, especialmente sobre el tratamiento de las personas en el ocaso de sus vidas. Su trabajo contribuye a informar las decisiones difícilesalrededor de lo que es mejor para una persona al llegar a la final de su vida. Taboada se asoma detrás de dos bombillas ? calaveras la muerte está dando luz verde o roja: permite que se produzca o previene que suceda. Su reloj representa que la línea de tiempo de vida está ligada a un dedo apoyado en el interruptor figurativo queen última instancia decidirá cual luz se ilumina. Naturalmente, hay muchas preguntas en torno al uso de este recurso. La consideración de todos los factores que afectan estas decisionesimportantes es realmente enorme. La investigación ayuda a resaltarla mejor manera de aplicar la intervención médica en estos díasfinales. Esto, junto a las distintas gamas de moral, ética, religión y cultura que se mezclan en el mundo, abre enormes preguntasconstantemente.

GUIDING US TO THE ETHICAL PATH• Paulina Taboada is a bioethicist who uses research to help address

moral questions, especially about the treatment of people in thetwilight of their lives. Her work helps to inform the difficult decisions that surround what is best for a person as they reach the end oftheir life. Taboada peers out from behind two skeletal light bulbs –death is being green-lit or red-lit: allowed to occur or prevented from occurring. Her watch, representing the timeline of one's life is bound to a finger resting on the figurative switch which will ultimately decide which light is to be illuminated. Naturally there are many questions surrounding this action. Considerations of all the factors surrounding such important decisions are indeed vast. Research helps highlight how best to apply medical intervention during these twilight days. This alongside the differing range of moral, ethical, religious and cultural mixes in the world opens huge questions.




VIVIENDO UNA VIDA PLENA GRACIAS A LA INVESTIGACIÓN• Pedro Cahn trabaja en las áreas de la investigación clínica, la prevención y

los servicios directos para las personas que viven con el VIH / SIDA. Su trabajo demuestra que ahora que existe la disposición para tratar la infección por el VIH, las personas que son VIH positivas pueden seguirsiendo miembros productivos y contribuyentes de la sociedad. Estaspersonas pueden llevar una vida plena como cualquier otra persona y contribuir a la sociedad de la misma manera que las personas que no viven con la infección. La mano derecha de Cahn representa a laspersonas que viven con el VIH / SIDA y refleja su opinión de que tienen el potencial de carga de un peso igual que los que no lo son. LIVING A FULL LIVE THROUGH RESEARCH• Pedro Cahn works in the areas of clinical research, prevention and direct

services for people living with HIV/AIDS. His work shows that now that there is the provision to treat HIV infection, people who are HIV positive can continue to be productive, contributing members of society. They can lead as fulfilling lives as anyone else, and contribute to society in the same ways as people who are not living with the infection. Cahn's right hand clearly represents people living with HIV/AIDS and reflects his view that they have the potential to burden an equal weight as those who are not. The AIDS ribbons are close to Cahn's face showing that when understood there is nothing to fear from the disease. Along his left arm, miniature versions of his right show the progress from treatment to productivity to fulfillment, using PAHO's AIDS awareness symbol as the beneficial climax to understanding, treating and accepting people living with this condition. Treatment is only a partial achievement in HIV/AIDS research. Continued investment in research may one day lead to a cure.www.paho.org/arteparalainvestigacion
