Vecino Servicial: Colombia Está Albergando Millones De
VenezolanosPor Davis Miller

Venezuela is in crisis. The level of corruption, violence, poverty, and monetary inflation in the country is rising. Their currency, the Bolivar, has no real value; according to the CBC’s (Canadian Broadcasting Company) Adrienne Arsenault, the rate of inflation has been a million percent in recent years. Today, it is more useful and profitable to create purses, art, and trinkets with the bills than it is to use them to buy anything. Because of this, Venezuelans are fleeing to the country to the west: Colombia. The NumbersAccording to Julia Cobb of Reuters, there are already almost a million Venezuelan immigrants, and should the situation continue worsening, the number will grow to an estimated 4 million by 2021, costing the Colombian government about 9 billion USD. According to Arsenault, the immigrants fleeing to Colombia are some of the most desperate. Because Venezuela and Colombia share a border, it is geographically convenient to immigrate there. It is also legally easy (compared to other possible destinations). Therefore, people who can’t afford to go to another country are immigrating to Colombia. As a result, these immigrants increasingly can’t afford to sustain themselves; the level of poverty among immigrants is high. Furthermore, the Cucuta hospital has gone into debt caring for Venezuelans in poor health, and diseases like measles have come back to the country; there already have been 76 cases.
A Helpful Neighbor: Colombia Is Sheltering Millions of Venezuelans
How They Are SurvivingThe refugees are, more or less, taking what work they can get. However, according to the UNHCR, there are not many opportunities in Colombia. Furthermore, some immigrants do not have the right to work and because of this, the mayor of Bogotá, where there are refugee camps, is asking that the immigrants be naturalized. Nevertheless, Joe Parkin Daniels of The Guardian notes that Venezuelans prefer the refugee camps to the poverty of Venezuela, where there “was no food” on the shelves of supermarkets at times. Another ProblemDue to the crisis, the level of scrutiny and criticism for the Maduro Regime has increased. More and more, his abuse of power is standing out to the world. Florida Senator Marco Rubio accused Maduro of “systematically starving his people as a means of asserting control” in a Miami Herald article. President Trump, according to Megan Janetsky of USA Today, said “We are going to take care of Venezuela.” Afterwards, Maduro positioned troops on the Colombian border. Recently, Colombia has changed its position, allowing for U.S. military action in Venezuela. Because of the growing tension, it is possible that a small disagreement might start an prolonged armed conflict. This would mean that it would be impossible to cross the border, plunging the lives of many venezuelans – and the whole region – into chaos.

Tomorrow, at Dawn
de Miguel von Fedak
Tomorrow, at dawn (by Victor Hugo)
Tomorrow, at dawn, at the hour when the countryside whitens,
I will depart. You see, I know you wait for me.I will go through the forest and over the
mountains.I cannot stay far from you any longer.
I will trudge on, my eyes fixed on my thoughts,Ignoring everything around me, without hearing
a sound,Alone, unknown, back stooped, hands crossed,
Saddened, and the day will be like night for me.
I will neither see the golden glow of the falling evening,
Nor the sails going down to Harfleur in the distance,
And when I arrive, I will place on your tombA bouquet of green holly and flowering heather.
A little kid at the beach
When I was at the beach,I saw a girl my age
But when I talked with herShe didn't seem well-behaved
So I left for the sea To swim,
But I saw a bird that was close
And it was hungrySo I let it eat
From my bag, I took some breadAnd I put it in my hand,
But when the bird approached,I became scared and ran far

Two years ago in the spring, I traveled from Boston to Xi’an,
China! I decided to study abroad in China because not only did
I want to become more fluent at speaking Chinese, but I also
wanted to be exposed to Chinese culture and see
famous historical sites. I think that the
hardest aspect of it was talking with
Chinese natives, because I was often
nervous and introverted. In addition, I was
afraid that I wouldn’t be able to understand
what they said. However, I learned how to
become a more extroverted person. In
Xi’an, I spent a lot of time at my Chinese
sister’s high school. We attended the
Chinese students classes in the
morning, but later, we had special culture classes. Sometimes
we did art, sometimes we cooked Chinese dishes, sometimes we
listened to lectures on Chinese tradition while taking notes.
Every Saturday, all the American students went to Xi’an’s
famous attractions. For example, we went to the Giant Wild
Goose Pagoda, the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, the Terracotta
Warriors, and many beautiful parks. I still want to study
Chinese, so I hope in the future I can go to China again!
