Kris Bosmans started cycling when he was 15 years old, in 1995. After practicing athletics for 4 years and soccer for 6 years he started cycling as a debutant. He was a member of the WPC Kapelle-op-den-Bos team and in 1996, Eddy Verbist of Sterrebeek became his personal trainer. At that time, Eddy coached professional riders like Roger Hammond, Henk Vogels, Stuart O'Grady, ... Eddy's dream was to coach someone of the youth categories wanting to become a professional cyclist. Kris' test results were great and his future looked promising...In 1998, Kris was one of the top15 riders at the juniors, and was one of the fastest sprinters of his generation. Eddy wanted to protect Kris from a burn-out, because he was a young cyclist. Therefore, Eddy trained him only on light intensity and he didn't let him participate in too many races.On July 11, 1998 a tragic thing happened: Kris was hit by a stroke. The left side of his body was completely paralyzed and he lost his speech. It took him 2 years to recover. At that time, Kris had physiotherapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy. He has now a hemiplegic cerebral palsy, concluding that he has less power transmission in his left leg compared to his right leg and he has spasticity in the left side of his body.In autumn 2008, after seeing a documentary about para-cyclist Jan Boyen in Beijing (the bronze Paralympic medalist on track pursuit with the amputations) and after visiting his neurologist, Kris was told he could be part of the para-cyclist world (cyclists with physical disabilities). Kris has been categorized as a MC3 para-cyclist (hemiplegic). There are 5 categories: Men C1 cyclists are people with the most physical limitations and Men C5 with the less, but they are all riding with a normal bike. These categories are divided into several divisions, as according to their disability. There are also tandems for the visually impaired cyclists, tricycles for cyclists with balance disturbances and handbikes for cyclists of whom the legs are paralyzed or amputated (paralysis of the legs or amputies one of the legs).Kris started competing again in 2009 as a para-cyclist and joined the Belgian para-cycling selection in 2010, which gave him a second chance to live his dream: to belong to the best cyclists of the world in the world of para-cycling!
