1 Introduction

1.1 Mounting Positions Normal position is where the hoist is mounted with load chain down and hoist body up. The load block attaches to the load and moves up and down. The hoist body is stationary. All of the models (SM1 through SM25) when specially equipped can be mounted in the normal position. Inverted position is where the hoist is mounted with load chain up and hoist body down. The hoist body attaches to the load and moves up and down with the load. Hoists in the inverted position are easier to install and setup because all the cabling is at the same level, and the hoist is at truss level. Only SM1, SM2, SM5 or SM10 hoists when properly equipped can be mounted in the inverted position. For inverted SM16, 20 or 25 positions, please contact the factory. Normal position (chain down) Inverted position (chain up)

1.2 Installation Types STAGEMAKER® concert hoists can be used in a mobile installation or a fixed installation. Careful consideration of the installation type and the mounting position should be taken before ordering so that the hoist can be properly equipped to meet the requirements. Mobile installation means the hoist is used in temporary or short-term setup. Hoists used in a mobile installation are typically mounted in the inverted position. Some examples of mobile installations: “on-tour” concerts, ground and roof supports, exhibitions, product presentations, and the circus. Local safety regulations must be followed at all times. These regulations could require:

Additional safety such as a steel rope between the upper suspension point and the lower hook point of the load or a redundant system.

De-rated capacity of the hoist Second brake For more advance lifting applications, use BGV-C1 Configuration D hoists providing enhanced

safety features Fixed installation means the hoist is used in a more permanent or long-term setup. Some of examples of fixed installations: theaters, studios, and arenas. In fixed installations the hoist is mounted in the normal position and situated usually out-of-sight. Because of the out-of-sight situation, over-travel electrical limit switches and low voltage control are mandatory. All of the models (except the SM2) when specially equipped can be mounted in fixed installations.

2 Performance STAGEMAKER® concert hoists are designed for lifting and transporting of materials only. Under no conditions or circumstances, either during initial installation or in regular use, are hoists to be used for lifting or transporting of personnel. For additional safety, precautions such as redundant systems, safety lines from load to structure or enhanced safety features such as the BGV-C1 hoist can be used.

2.1 Environment The hoists are designed for indoor use and limited outdoor use where the ambient temperature is between 14°F [-10°C] and 104°F [40°C], elevation is less than 3300 ft [1000 m] and the relative humidity is less than 90%. The hoist control enclosure has protection rating of NEMA 3R type. The hoists can be used outdoors with some precautions such as specifying the hoist with a drain hole in the load sprocket compartment, covering the hoist body/enclosure with a vinyl rain cover, or protecting the hoist under a shelter. The vinyl rain cover would cover the hoist body/enclosure after the hoist is in position. The hoist cannot be operated when the vinyl rain cover is covering the hoist body/enclosure. Without these precautions, continuous exposure to extreme weather conditions will lead to damage of electrical components.

2.2 Sound Level The sound intensity level of the hoist in the assumed operating location does not exceed 76 dB.

2.3 Proper Installation Hoists must be installed clear of any obstruction that could prevent the top and bottom hooks from being inline.

2.4 Hoists for Ground Supports Use single fall SM10 hoists for ground supports. Using a SM10 hoist reduces chain wear and risk of chain twisting. Idler wheels on the ground support must have matching grooves and proper pitch diameter.

9 Hoist Brake and Torque Limiting Device The friction materials for the brake and the torque-limiting device are asbestos free. The hoist motor is equipped with a D.C. electromagnetic disc brake to bring the load to a smooth and quick stop and to hold the load when the hoist motor is not energized. Multiple springs are used to provide the clamping force. An energized coil releases the hoist brake. The motor brake on SM1, SM2, SM5, and SM10 is located in a sealed housing to provide a degree of protection against dirt or water penetration. The components are designed to dissipate the heat. On the other hand, the hoist brake on SM16, SM20 and SM25 hoists is located in a vented housing and a fan provides additional cooling. A built-in torque-limiting device prevents the lifting of excessive loads, which could damage the hoist and/or the supporting structural members. The torque-limiting device is set to slip at 125% of rated capacity, except configuration D hoists. The capacity in configuration D is de-rated 50% from standard to meet BGV-C1 regulations in which require a mechanical design factor of 10 to 1 minimum for the hoist. This includes the clutch, which is set at 250% of the de-rated capacity. The torque-limiting device on SM1, SM2, SM5 and SM10 concert hoists is a slip clutch that is integrated into the design of the hoist motor and brake. The slip clutch is adjustable for wear and offers these features:

If the clutch slips, once power is removed the brake will engage and hold the load.

In the absence of a limit switch, the slip clutch also serves as a safety device for over-travel for the upper and lower limits of hoist travel. The hoist body, made from high density-die cast aluminum, is designed to withstand the impact of load block and chain-stop.

Overload limiting device The torque-limiting device on SM16, SM20 and SM25 concert hoists is integrated into the design of the hoist multistage gear train.

10 Load Chain, Load Sprocket and Chain Guide The load sprocket (or load wheel) has five (eight with a 45° load wheel on SM2, six on SM16) precision-machined chain pockets. The chain guide is a standard feature and it helps guide and hold the load chain in the pockets of the load wheel for safe operation and to prevent jamming. The Chainflux chain guide replaces the standard chain guide on the SM5 or SM10 hoist models equipped for the inverted position only. This high strength Chainflux chain guide provides a remarkably low friction coefficient, facilitating passage of the chain on ejection. Its special shape provides a much more fluid horizontal flow of the chain as it comes off the load wheel. It helps to prevent chain jamming at the upper part of the hoist as the chain is ejected as well as guiding the chain into the chain bag and reduces contact area between the hoist body and chain. 12 Low Voltage Control The low voltage control is magnetic motor control utilizing contactors. The controls are mounted in an enclosure on the hoist. The control panel for the SM1, SM2 and SM5 hoist is a printed circuit board with the contactors, transformer, etc. soldered to the board. The circuit board makes most of the internal connections. On the other hand, the SM10, SM16, SM20, and SM25 hoists have contactors, transformer, etc. mounted on a plate with electrical wire connections. Configurations B,C,D,S & V are low voltage control.

13 Hoist Limit Switch

13.1 Upper and Lower Electrical Limit Switches Upper and lower electrical limit switches are for over-travel protection and available for all models except the SM2. The limit switches are load block or chain-stop activated. The upper and lower electrical limit switches are effective only when the hoist is mounted in the normal position of a fixed installation. The switch housing is recessed into the underside of the hoist body.

Note: The upper and lower electrical limit switches are not to be used as automatic stops during normal operation of the hoists.

The hook block activates the upper limit switch as it approaches the hoist body and once it is activated, only the “up” circuit is opened. When the hook block is lowered to its lowest limit of travel, the chain-stop, mounted to the free end of the load chain, activates the lower limit switch, which opens the “down” circuit only.

As standard the lower limit position only is adjustable from maximum lift. It is adjusted by repositioning the chain-stop on the free end of the load chain. The chain-stop shall always be located at least 36 inches [1m] from the end of the chain. If the load block has to stay a certain distance away from the hoist body, an extra chain-stop has to be mounted to the load chain between hoist body and the load block. The extra chain-stop strikes the limit switch instead of the load block. This extra chain-stop is only possible for one-fall units. In all other cases, use a geared limit switch. See Hoist Limit Switches.

13.2 Geared Limit Switch A geared limit switch allows the user flexibility to adjust and set the limits of hoist travel. The switches are wired into the control circuits. The limit switch enclosure has a protection rating of IP-55. Note: The Geared Limit Switch is not designed as a precision limit switch and should be used as a safety stop only. The geared limit switch accuracy is dependent on the hoist selected and the height of lift (accurate to within +/- 15"). The use of contact type upper and lower limit switches described above in section 13.1 (only when the hoist is mounted in the normal position) or the Stagemaker Configuration C is recommended when the application requires close tolerance positioning. Once the limit switch is tripped, the load must travel at least 18 inches [50cm] in the opposite direction to reset the switch.

The 2-switch geared limit switch is adjustable and provides over-travel protection for the upper and lower limits of hoist travel. The 4-switch geared limit switch provides over-travel protection for upper and lower limits of hoist travel and it can be set for two additional intermediary positions as needed. Configuration 2 switches 4 switches A Not available Not available B Optional for all SM hoists (except SM2) Optional for SM5 and SM10 only. C Optional for all SM hoists Optional for SM5 and SM10 only. D Must use a 4-switch geared limit Standard E Optional for all SM hoists Optional for SM5 and SM10 S Not available Not available V Optional Optional When the rotary limit switch is installed on the outside of the hoist body, it increases some of the outline dimensions of the hoist body.

17 Incremental Encoder The incremental encoder constantly monitors the position/height of the load and feeds it back to the controller. With the incremental encoder, the positions are not absolute and need to be reset. Note: None of these encoders are short-circuited protected. Therefore, it is very important to check the wiring before power is applied. R&M recommends the use of Belden MMICS shielded cable for the motor cables when an incremental encoder is used.

17.1 SM1 Hoists The encoder when supplied on the SM1 hoist is mounted next to the brake in the same spot where the geared limit switch would be mounted. The geared limit switch cannot be furnished if the encoder is supplied on this hoist. The flange is specially machined and therefore it is not possible to add an encoder to existing units. The encoder generates two signals, A and B at 5 pulses per one revolution.

17.2 SM5 or SM10 Hoists The encoder when supplied on the SM5 or SM10 hoist is a ball bearing with an integrated pulse sensor. The bearing housing is specially machined and therefore it is not possible to add an encoder to existing units. The encoder generates two signals, A and B at 32 or 48 pulses (depends on the hoist size) per one revolution.
