UFor yet another month you have befo-re you the pages of Taxi Magazine. So relax on your cab ride and thinkabout some of the leisure options sug-gested here. Tutankhamen graces ourcover. Since arriving in Madrid lastspring the most famous of theEgyptian pharaohs has become one ofthe city’s main attractions. The exhi-bition “The Tomb and its Treasures”extends its presence until the 16th ofJanuary, as Howard Carter's discove-ries continue to fascinate visitors atthe Casa de Campo’s Pavilion XII,housing the replicas of the treasureson display.

In our suggestions for the stage, wefocus on two: Galdosiana at the Fernán Gómez Theater, an interpreta-tion of the feminine side of Galdós'swork; and the children's playSleeping Beauty at the Galileo.

Miles away we visit Manifesta8 inCartagena, we gave in to the charms and cultural and gastronomic attractions of the Ribeira Sacra, orSacred Shore; returned to Gijón to explore its fall options; and at theFortress of the Sun in Lorca saw howthe summer is still alive and kickingin the region of Murcia.

Sixty-four pages packed with placesto go… all in a taxi.

Three Months at the Opera is a project sponsored by

the Carlos III Arts Hall and the Royal Theater in which

five students from Madrid’s Carlos III University will

take three courses on Opera offered by the Arts Hall.

The first of them, nearing completion, has covered

the production of the opera The Rise and Fall of the

City of Mahagonny by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill,

to be followed by The Turn of the Screw and The

Knight of the Rose.

On the Arts Hall website one can check out all the

information and work material covered to date,

ranging from accounts of the course days to inter-

views with professionals from the world of opera, like

tenor Enrique Viana or Royal Theater assistant artistic

director Joachim Pflieger. The aim, of both the classro-

om courses from the Arts Hall as well as the Three

Months at the Opera program, is to expose this

medium, which sometimes is inaccessible, to young

people with or without previous experience in the

genre. It also offers the opportunity to see the Royal

Theater’s most unexplored corners and witness its

working methods right up close.

noventa aniversario.

que afronta con perspectivas de éxito la

The Fernan Gomez Theater pays

homage to Galdós, the work

focusing specifically on some of the

writer’s most representative female

characters. Galdosiana plays with

time and space to transmit the

programación recupera a artistas y escena-

(Huesca). No podemos olvidarnos de la músi-

ca con Mulier Misterio de Puy de Sons;

The 20th Anniversary of Elche's Medieval

Festival coincides with its 15th edition,

running from October 22 to November 1.

As such, this is a very special edition with

Memorabilia chosen as its theme - a Latin

word referring to things that are "memorable"

or "worthy of being remembered." The

program brings back artists and attractions

that have been part of the Festival in the

past while incorporating new shows and

events too.

The extensive lineup this year features

performances by Jordi Savall, who will open

the Festival on October 22 at the Basilica of

Santa Maria, with Music During the Era of

the Borgias, performed by the Capella Reial

de Catalunya, Hesperion XXI and Montserrat

Figueras. This will be followed by Europe or

The Ship of Madmen, from Erasmus-Escena,

produced by the SECC with the "Lorcan"

project Traces of La Barraca and Tambores

Taiko (Taiko Drums) from the Japanese group

Hono-Daiko, from Ishiwaka.

In the children's theater department, the

Festival further bolsters its program, if that is

possible, with its shows Eixemenis: El viatjer

de les mil paraules from the company

Dependent; The Pied Piper, from the Paradise

Theatre (Vitoria-Gasteiz); The Monster,

from Efimer (Tárrega-Lerida); and Dragoncio,

from the Binéfar (Huesca) Puppeteers.

We cannot overlook music, with Mulier

Misterio from Puy de Sons; Dança da

morte from Nao d'Amores and Teatro da

Cornucopia; storytellers with Medieval

Fables from the Carreta Teatre (Elche);

and Roving Concerts from the Carillon

Ambulant de Douai.

Exposición Exhibition

> Tutankhamon

Egipto sigue muy presente en Madrid. Tras varios

Egypt continues to be very present in Madrid. After

several months of success, it has been confirmed

that Tutankhamen will remain in the capital until

January 16th. The attraction featuring the entire

process of the discovery and treasures which

Howard Carter found in Egypt continues to be one

of the city’s cultural highlights.

Tutankhamun is undoubtedly the most famous of all

the Pharaohs, as in no other tomb were so many trea-

sures found, including the famous gold mask. When

compared with other burial chambers in The Valley of

the Kings it is much smaller and seems to have been

completed in haste. However, what makes the tomb

of Tutankhamun so special is the fact that it was the

only one never plundered by thieves. As a result, it was

preserved almost intact.

For the first time in eighty-seven years this exhibi-tion offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy a three-dimensional reproduction of the tomb as it was ori-ginally found. The valuable funerary objects havebeen copied faithfully, right down to the tiniestdetail, making it a unique replica in the world in itsthoroughness. Three burial chambers appear befo-re visitors’ eyes, in the very state in which theywere discovered. The black figures of the sentinelsstand, just as before, before the burial chamber; inthe treasure chamber a jackal on a chest keepswatch over a shrine of canopic jars, just as it did3300 years ago ...The exhibition offers up a unique experience: tocontemplate the funerary treasure as it was at thetime of its discovery, a sight that only a fortunatefew in the 1920s had the privilege of admiring.

Another incentive to choose this destination is the chance to get lost in its vineyards, with their officiallycertified Ribeira Sacra wines, which provide the rawmaterial for some major events, like the Amandi Wine Fair, held in Sober, Chantada and Quiroga. A 2000year old winemaking tradition has a lot to offer, as do the area’s centuries-old monasteries, churches and castles.Monforte de Lemos is considered the capital of theRibeira Sacra and a must see, its Torre del Homenaje(Tower of Homage) especially notable. Standing over 30meters high and located next to the Parador, it is one ofthe best vantage points from which visitors may overlo-ok the valley. In Nogueira de Ramuin, in the heart of the Ribeira Sacraand just over 28 kilometers from Ourense, we stumbleupon St. Stephen’s Benedictine monastery, now turnedinto a parador.

Although its origins can only be traced back to the 10thcentury, they may well go all the way back to the 6th,combining Romanesque, Baroque, Gothic and Renaissancearchitecture within its natural surroundings: the canyonsof the Sil River. The list of monuments to tour is, without doubt, an incen-tive hard to match elsewhere: San Pedro de Bembibre,Taboada dos Freires, San Paio Diomondi, Santa Maria dePesqueiras, Montederramo, San Pedro de Rocas, Ferreirade Panton, San Paio de Abeleda, Santa Cristina de Ribasde Sil and the Monasterio de San Vicente do Pino doMonforte, all from which you can plan routes and tripspacked with charm. For the more adventurous there is a wide range of activi-ties, such as catamaran trips, one of the main touristdraws in both provinces. Following a winding path into theheart of a true natural paradise, it is certainly one of themost advisable experiences for visitors. In Lugo there areports at Belesar and Doade, while in Ourense trips can belaunched from San Esteban.

The Ribeira Sacra also offers services for visitors seekingrelaxation. The Aguas Santas spa, located in Lugo provin-ce’s Panton, is a leading site in the area of health tourism, featuring bicarbonate, sulfur and sodium-rich water treat-ments, each with its different indications and properties. All this along with a golf course, restaurant, relaxationtechniques, beauty spa, saunas, steam baths and thermalcircuits. To visit the Ribeira Sacra is to be immersed right inthe heart of one of the country’s most renowned wineregions. The Chantada Wine Fair is held in mid March, andthe Quiroga Wine Fair on Easter Saturday and Sunday.Over the years these wine-centered events have becomevenues to taste typical area products which, gastronomi-cally speaking, are capable of satisfying even the most dis-cerning palates. You cannot leave without touring the Ribeira Sacraaboard the Viñobus or Camino de invierno (WinterTrail), nature routes on a minibus on which you canvisit wineries and fields, enjoying the truly uniquelandscape formed by terraced fields where vines dan-gle on nearly vertical cliffs over the river. Another keydestination is the Ribeira Sacra Wine Centre whichholds guided tastings and tours of the winery withexperts, artists, wine tasters and wine aficionados. Inthis Holy year, a perfect alternative is to take the win-ter trail crossing the region.

Gijón also offers the advantages of both the city andcountryside.

GIJÓN AND ITS PINCHOSJust so that there are no more excuses to not visit Gijón,we propose another interesting plan to round things out. From November 23-28 the city will become the world capi-tal of the pincho, when locals and visitors will immersethemselves in the world of “miniature cuisine” and its culture. Over seventy establishments in the city will compe-te to be awarded the “Golden Staircase” for their crea-tions. A week later there will be the Gochu AsturceltaGastronomic Days, during which one can enjoy this covetedand exclusive delicacy. Gijón holds such food celebrationsevery month of the year, making it a national culinary capi-tal. The city’s rural areas, ideal for hiking, biking or riding asegway, allow visitors to burn up all the calories they have consumed.Gijón is a great idea for this fall. Can you possibly think ofanything better?

GIJÓN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVALIt opens on November 19 and runs until the 27th, now cele-brating its forty eighth edition and considered one of themost irreverent and alternative on the national scene.

A good illustration of this ancient history is thatCartagena boasts the Iberian Peninsula’s only Punic rem-nant: the Punic Wall. And on its streets stand some ofthe most significant Roman buildings in the entirecountry: the Roman Theatre, Augusteum, House ofFortune or Decumano are some of the most reveredarchaeological sites by admirers of this ancient culture. All of them, together with many other sites, such as theCastillo de la Concepción, or refuges dating from theCivil War, form part of the Cartagena Port of CulturesConsortium. This initiative has managed to bring toget-her the city’s rich heritage, transmitting it to citizens inan intense, open and expressive way.But Cartagena is a city to be strolled in order to take inits modern, Baroque and Neoclassical buildings. Miningfrom its mountains allowed leading families to buildtheir homes along its streets, as important buildingswere erected that today give the city a unique majesty.Above all it is a city looking towards the future, a townwhose tourist-oriented efforts and attractions just keepon coming. OHM Belleza

OHM Beauty offers a treatment service aimed at the well-being of women who wish to enhance theirbodies without “going under the knife.” For the fallthe two most popular treatments are radiofrequencyand cavitation. Radiofrequency is the ideal option if the aesthetic problem is sagging skin, not fat. After the first sessionthe lifting effect is visible, tightening and tensing theskin. This alternative is suitable for any body part, as it gives the appearance of firmness in the buttocks, arms and abdomen. To combat the accumulation of fat cavitation is thebest alternative to liposuction because, thanks to astate-of-the-art ultrasound system, it hits fat cellsdirectly with a vacuum treatment. This process achieves a natural and gradual elimination of the hard fat that will not go away with diets or the aid of the exercise.

Texto: MARIO DE LAS HERAS
