WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 23, 2013 3F EATURESHigh school sweethearts, long distance relationship
standing in front of me. No word cameout but “hi.” It wasthe most nerve-wrack-ing experience I hadin years. I was able tokiss the lips that I had
wanted to kiss since I
got to the US. Joe,the magic we oncehad came back thatnight.
I spent a monthback home with herand it was the besttime of my life up todate. Joe, we wereengaged. We were ty-ing the knot in 3
years and every thing was fine as I went
back to the US.Two months after Iadjusted to the USlifestyle again. Unfor-tunately, the love be-tween Lena and Igrew cold. Wecouldn’t find time totalk and we becamestrangers. We calledoff the engagement. Ithas been two yearsafter our secondbreak up and it still
hurt. When I spoke toher a week ago, shetold me that thethought of us togeth-
er still crossesher mind butshe ignores it.
I have losther twice andI don’t wantto strike out.She doesn’t
want to cometo the US for a reasonI don’t know. Joe, Iam willing to give upeverything to go back to the Philippines justto prove how much Ilove her. My life has
had a void since Icame here and I knewshe’s the one who canfill it. I believe thatlove conquers all, andreal love does not die.Joe, I come to you inthe name of love. Iseverything worth risk-ing for the one youlove? Should I startanew?
Tommy
TOMMY, It is true that time anddistance can some-times be love’s greatestenemy. You have
proven that twice and you knew how a rela-tionship can be side
swept by career andother priorities.
Tommy, l oving someone would al waysentail decisions, Deci-
sions that may changeour lives forever. Youhave a clear picture of where your relation-
ship is heading if you
decide to stay in the states. It seems thatthere is only one op-
tion that may give alevel ground in win-ning her back.
If convincing Lenato join you in theStates proves to be
very difficult then someone has to makea sacrifice to settle
your preferences. If you ask me if it isworth risking every-thing for someone you
truly love then I wouldonly have one answer for that. Yes.
The true test of one’s love for another
person is his willing-
ness to deny himself of his own needs just tomake the other person
happy. Love is some-times spelled sacrifice.
And it is what we giveand not what we get
from a re lationshipthat makes it reward-ing.
Tommy, at this point, you know thatthere is only one way to prove your love forthe girl you want tomarry. If it is the call-
ing of your heart, then prove it. Even if itmeans leaving the life
you have al ways want-ed to live.
Opportunities for a
better life come oftenbut love knocks at ourhearts only a few
times. This may be your last call , Tommy. Now is the time tomake a decision beforeeverything falls out of
place . L et us alwaysremember that it is al-ways better to live a
simple life with l ovethan to live a rich lifethat is empty and voidof true happiness.

DEAR Joe,My name is Tommy and it’s been years
since I left for the US but the feelings Ihad for my high school love, Lena, isstill burning inside me. Friends told meto move on with my life. I was involvedwith many girls here but it’s still herface I see every night as I close my eyes.
I can’t complainabout my life here inthe US. I’m indepen-dent for the first timein my life. I was ableto accomplish things
that I would neverhave done in thePhilippines.
The time we spenttogether in highschool’s incomparableto the life I have herein the US. She wasmy first love as I wasto her. She was a sis-ter, classmate, girl-friend, but most of allshe was my best
friend. She knew meinside out. She wasthe one who pushedme to go to the USand now I’m reapingthe benefits of it. I
was emotionally weak back then but shegave me strength. Be-fore I left I told herthat I’d marry hersomeday. I even toldher that if we don’tend up together I’d be
a minister and wouldnot marry just toprove myself to her. It
was corny but now
those words still ringin my ears.
It was my faultthat we broke up. Icheated on her on my first year in the US,
and she found outabout it through afriend. It was monthsof no emails andphone calls. But a
year after, we becamefriends again. Wetalked once in a whilebut tried to avoid
what happened to ourrelationship.
6 years after, I went back home for
the first time for my best friend’s wedding. A week before I ar-rived, she told methat she won’t makeit ’cause of work, so Itold her that we’ll goout to dinner for oldtimes sake and sheagreed. During the
wedding, I was talk-ing to an old pal
when a friend of minetold me he was going
to introduce me tosomeone. I went withhim and to my sur-prise, she was there

Pops still believes in forever for each other and itshows.
What’s your songfor Martin thesedays?
“Times of YourLife.”
What do you missmost about Martin?
The feeling of hav-

W HAT a joy to catch up withmy friend from way back,Pops Fernandez.
There are a lot of other traits I admirein Pops which I hopeto imbibe, like her re-silience and how shemanages to exude
grace under pressure. She’s preparing forher Valentine concert,“Foursome,” with herex-husband MartinNievera, and hus-band-and-wife Ogie
Alcasid and Regine Velasquez on Feb. 14at the Mall of Asia
Arena.It was Pops who
came up with the
concert title and theconcept for the posterpictorial showing thefour of them in bed.“For a change, hindikami naka-formal at-tire sa poster,” shesaid. “Since we are allso comfy with eachother, we can just letour hair down andenjoy doing theshow.”
Excerpts from our
one-on-one interview:
How would youdescribe your rela-tionship with Martinthese days?
On stage we feelfree to say anything
to each other. Whenthe mic is on, free-
wheeling banter nakami. We have thatkind of chemistry.Sometimes I feel like
we’re more relaxedtogether onstage than when we are offstage. But Mart and I alsoget a chance to haveserious talks. Wedon’t meddle in eachother’s lives. No unso-licited advice. Weknow we can alwaysrun to each other
when we feel theneed to do so.
What do youthink is the magic of
your tandem withhim all these years?
Sometimes we wonder nga and say,“ Kinikilig pa rin k ayo
watching us perform(laughs).” Perhaps theaudience feels ourhonesty and sincerity. We don’t lead themon. Even if we’re no
longer a couple, per-forming together issomething we willnever get tired of do-ing. We feel blessedthat there is still pub-lic clamor for it. Wehave so much respect
