EL PUENTE NUEVO (Ronda’s New bridge)

cos, etc.

The New Bridge is, together with the bullring of the Royal Caval-ry Order of Ronda, symbol and soul of the city.

There were two great ideas in order to built this bridge. The rst of them was thought in 1735, be-ing king Philip V, consisting of a 35 metres diameter arch, and whose works nished only 8 months later. Unfortunately, this bridge did not work, because it collapsed, brin-ging to death more or less to 50 people.

RONDA.

A hot day at the end of August, close to the prehistoric village of Acinipo, a mother and son collect clusters of ripe, wild grapes from the banks of the Setenil stream. They place them in a wicker basket return to the village, amongst the forest of cork, gall and holms oaks. Once in their grass covered circular house, perhaps by oversight and with the providence of fate, the high temperature and ripening of the fruit, generates, within a question of hours, a fermentation, resulting in a strange liquid, better said, an exciting and delicious juice. Such is the beginning of the history of the wines of Ronda. There are various archaeological references and documents that attest to the long tradition of Ronda as the land of vines and wines. The coins of the Iberia Roman town of Acinipo (47-44 AD) that feature a cluster of grapes, without doubt demonstrates the importance of the vine in the economy of these communities. But not all was recorded and the last years of the 20th Century marked a turning point, thanks to the e orts of new local and foreign wine producers that had a rm commitment to the area. The wines of Ronda (Denomination of Origen Wines of Malaga) are the ideal complement for local and other cuisines. More than 15 existing vineyards make extraordinary reds, rosés and whites that are available on the menus of the majority of restaurants in Ronda.

The mixed organisation of tourism in Ronda, formed by the Town Hall and 25 private busines-ses has signed an agreement of collaboration with the Centre of Tourism Iniciatives (CIT), in order to commercialise the capacity of Ronda as a city of conferences. In this way it is to be CIT that pro-motes Ronda everywhere. The Deputy Mayor of Ronda and new councillor of Tourism, Francisco Cañestro, put a figure on the ta-ble: it is necessary to encourage people to sleep in the city, given that today it only represents 30% of the visitors that come to Ronda, but supposes 70 million Euros of the 100,000 million annual inco-me for tourism in Ronda. And in relation to objectives, the director of CIT, Alfredo Carrasco, indicated that the agreement was signed for a period of one year where they would work closely with re-lated businesses and focusing in Andalusia.

ming made in favour of our First Deputy Mayor, Mr. Fran-cisco Cañestro as the new councillor for Tourism. We will impress more if possible in favour of improving and providing whatever neces-sary for the very best develo-pment of the tourism sector.

It is always a satisfaction and a pride to be mayor of one’s city. For me it is doubly satisfying to be mayor of Ronda, this ‘Dreamed City’ of Rilke, in which the colours and the moments seem mo-tionless due to the natural fortress of the unique gorge, which has an one of the ol-dest records of modern day tourism, making it fashiona-ble throughout old Europe. The romantic travellers, such as Richard Ford o Gustavo Doré, including Eugenia de Montijo who was Empress of French, who liked to lose and mix themselves with the people of our ‘Serranía’.

A greeting and congratu-lations to all those that have taken the initiative and wor-ked on this publication, as well as the readers, whether they be related to tourism or not.
