Geometry
This term we have been focusing on geometry as our
main maths subject. We have learnt to draw circlesmore accurately and create new designs with them.
We now proudly hang them around the classroom to
show off our brilliance!
Bike Ed
In Term 4, we will
be starting off Bike
Ed, so we are now
brushing up on our road rules. We have already done
posters on bike safety and right hand turn procedures. We
are continuously doing worksheets on road rules and signs,
and Mr Galante isnt going to let anyone on the road
without knowing
their road rules!
China Art
In Art we have been doing Chinese themed art.
First, we did Chinese roller prints , and they look
fabulous! Everyone chose their own symbol, and
used it as a stencil to roll over, in paint. We then
did a Chinese typical scene, most of the sceneshaving native birds and trees in them.
Reading Journals
We split ourselves into four groups, and all read
interesting novels. Once reading a couple of
chapters a week, we summarised them into our
reading journals. Once we have finished them, we
moved onto a couple of other reading activities.
Everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy the novelschosen for us.

School Watch
School Watch is a partnership between the WAPolice and the Department of Education aimed at
protecting our schools from vandalism, theft and
damage.
Every year, criminal damage to schools not only
costs Western Australian taxpayers tens of
thousands of dollars, but also inconveniences
students, their families, teachers and local
residents.
While the Police and Department work closely
together to minimise crime at school premises,
you too can help. With more than 650 schoolsinvolved in the School Watch program the
community's role is vital, particularly after school
hours and during school holidays.
Most importantly, if you live near a school and
see or hear suspicious behaviour immediately
contact School Watch Security or the Police.
Your call could prevent break-ins, vandalism,
graffiti or even arson. Ensuring your school is
well cared for reflects on your community and
contributes to the value of surrounding
residential properties, so it's worth it!At the local level school principals are encouraged
to promote School Watch and, where possible,
provide feedback through newsletters and the
local media in instances where residents' calls
have been valuable.
Each month, School Watch receives an average of
200 calls from the public. During holiday periods
the number increases significantly. So your
involvement really makes a difference.

Centenary Celebrations
To fully acknowledge this most
significant historical event, the
Minister for Education, Hon Peter
Collier MLC, has agreed to closeAlbany schools
on Friday 31 October 2014. Many exciting
activities are already planned for the Albany
community with more being discussed. During
the Centenary period, our students will belearning more about the history behind ANZAC
and the important role played by Albany and the
convoy. We hope you and your family will take
advantage of this fantastic opportunity to
commemorate the occasion and take part in the
many activities available.

Congratulations!
The Wiggins family siblings, Danica and Emily
have been enjoying their success after the trio
performed well at the State Junior Individual
Time Trial Championships. They won theirrespective age divisions in their event at
Champion Lakes in Perth. Danica took out the
Under-13 individual time trial by almost seven
seconds. She also won the title last year.
Younger sister Emily finished fourth in her
second major race, two minutes behind Danica.
Their brother Craig won his Under 17 age group
category.
Year 7 Scoliosis Information
Pamphlets on scoliosis have been sent home withYear 7 students and parents are asked to read
them and seek assistance from a health
professional if there are any concerns .
Scoliosis is a condition where the spine is curved
sideways. It is more common in girls but boys can
also have this condition. It becomes noticeable in
early adolescence (9-13years) andparents are
asked to follow directions in the pamphlet to check
their child for this condition. If you find any of the
signs listed, get a re-check from your family
doctor, as treatment may be required.

Jogathon
The response to the Jogathon was fabulous, money is still coming in but so far have collected awhopping $8,025.95! A big thank-you students, teachers and parents for all your help. All money
raised will be used to benefit of Yakamia PS students. Our next meeting is this Tuesday 9 September
at 3:30 in Pre-primary, all welcome, cake provided. A raffle will be held in 4th term for a brand new
kids bike.
Nature Based Playground
Thanks: The committee for the Early Childhood Nature Playground would like to say a huge thank
you to all those that helped out with the moving of the boat. The Kindy and Pre-Primary children did
an excellent job digging around the boat during the day and then it only took 40 minutes to release it
from its moorings and carry it over to the new location. (Thanks Michael for the chainsaw!) Stage one
is now complete thanks to the P&C's contribution and the boat appears to be a big hit!
The last task is to give the boat a name. In Term 4 we will be inviting all school students to nominate
a name and then vote on a shortlist. So get your thinking caps on!
Busy Bee:Our next project is the sandpit. To create a softer and more natural setting, we will be
creating some gardens around the existing sandpit. A busy beehas been scheduled for Thursday,
18September at 3.15pmso we are asking for all hands on deck. There will be lots of digging,
planting and mulching so bring your shovel, gloves and wheelbarrows. Remember! Many hands make
light work.
Fundraising:Term 4 will see more fundraising, so we can hopefully see further changes in the
playground before the year is out. We have an upcoming movie night, some Bunnings Sausage Sizzlesand some other ideas are also in the pipe line. Any offers of time or donations for these events would
be greatly appreciated. We will keep you posted.
Wanted:Medium to large granite rocks and logs. Does anyone have or know anyone that has a
property with round and relatively smooth granite rocks or logs that they would be willing to donate?
We are hoping to incorporate rocks and logs in the playground to create a more natural feeling and
double as seating and garden borders. Please contact Sam on 0439 691 461 if you can help.
Thank you to you all for your support so far, we couldn't do it without you. We hope for your
continuing support in the months to come as we endeavour to create a playground which will expand
our children's imaginations through natural play.

Single parenting - By Professor Matt
Sanders
Single parents often say they feel its more
difficult to discipline a child without a partners
support. But its very important to approach
discipline in exactly the same way as if you were
parenting with someone else.
Its vital to have a game plan and be consistent.
That means setting house rules that dont
fluctuate.
It may surprise some people to know that
children like boundaries. Kids very easily become
comfortable with the familiarity of a routine at
bedtime, at mealtimes or when its time to get out
of the house in the morning. Positive and
predictable routines mean discipline will become
much easier. Life wont have to be full of big
battles over little issues!
Another worry many single parents express is the
lack of a significant male or female influence in
the household. Mothers may be feel this more
keenly when theyre raising a son alone, as many
fathers do when theyre raising a daughter.
Its always important to encourage your child to
have role models and mentors. Role models can
show children how to behave, and what is the
appropriate thing to do.
So, single parents may want to look for
opportunities for their children to get to know
other men or women in the childs life. It could be
a grandparent, an aunt or uncle, a trusted family
friend or a sports coach. Having someone who will
serve a mentoring role throughout the childs life
can be a great example to and support for -- the
child.

The Great Southern Early Years Network
(GSEYN) is planning an Early Years (0 to 8)
conference to be held in Albany on July 19thand
20thnext year.
The theme of the conference is Building Capacity
.. Growing our children together.
The early years, 0-8 and in particular 0-4 are
recognised as the most important years of a
growing childs life. It is during the time, before
the start of formal education, that many of the
childs potentials are developed, which will
ultimately influence their future state of health,
their career opportunities and the social
relationships they develop. In other words, their
future health, wealth and happiness.
The purpose of this two day conference is to
provide a range of events, speakers, workshops
and hands-on-activities that will be interestingand engaging for parents and carers, community
groups and practitioner professionals (education,
health, industry, local government and
government) from communities across Western
Australia, as well as delegates from other
communities across Australia.
Please mark July 19thand 20th2015 in your diary.
