44 2SKILLS AND ACTIVITIES
TECHNIQUE
1. The pentascale used in the Bartók Study in D is major.
D E F G A
1 1 1⁄2 1
All major pentascales use the same pattern of whole and half steps.
The Italian staccato derives from a word meaning to “pull apart” or detach. In playing staccato, you do not punch the keys or jump away from them; you simply shorten each sound by releasing the key. You will feel your hand “release” easily. A dot above or below the notehead indicates staccato. Play each example.
A special sign is not always necessary to show a legato sound.
2. Perform the following legato major pentascale phrases.
and so on, upward, on everywhite-key pentascale pattern
and so on, downward, on everywhite-key major pentascale pattern
Repeat:
• finger staccato, • wrist staccato,
