The Cameron prize in practical therapeutics was awardedto Prof. R. A. Peters, F.R.s., in recognition of his discovery ofdimercaprol. The Ettles scholarship and Leslie medal forthe most distinguished medical graduate of the year wereawarded to Anne T. Lambie.

Royal Society of MedicineThe council of this society has decided to create a section

of general practice, which " will concern itself solely withadditions to and applications of medical knowledge underthe conditions of general practice," and " will strictly avoidany suspicion that its discussions embrace any mattersconcerned with the political and ethical as distinct from thetechnical and scientific aspects of general medical practice."If within three months no objections are received from fellows,the new section will ipso facto be established.

Harveian Society of LondonThe summer meeting of this society was held on July 19,

at the Papworth Village Settlement, where Dr. R. R. Trail,medical director of the settlement and president of the

society, explained the principles on which Papworth worked.There were, he said, three main objects-active treatment,rehabilitation, and resettlement. He pointed out that nochild born at Papworth during the 32 years of its existencehad developed pulmonary tuberculosis. Visits were paid tothe X-ray department, where demonstrations were given,and to the industries, where patients were seen at work

making leather goods, furniture, and motor-car bodies, andengaged in printing and book-binding.

Edinburgh Post-Graduate Board for MedicineOn Monday, July 31, at 3.30 P.M. in the anatomy lecture-

theatre of Edinburgh University, Dr. A. J. Rhodes will speakon Poliomyelitis and Poliomyelitis-like Illnesses.

British Medical Association Prizes

The Sir Charles Hastings clinical prize (50 guineas) isoffered by the association for an essay, by a member engagedin general practice, which " must include personal observa.tions and experiences collected by the candidate in generalpractice." Weekend Course on Rheumatic Diseases

A weekend course on the chronic rheumatic diseases isto be held at the rheumatism unit of St. Stephen’s Hospital,London, S.W.10, on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 7 and 8.The course will be opened by Lord Amulree, who will speakon the social and economic aspects.

Institute of OphthalmologyOn Oct. 4 Dr. Russell Brain, P.R.C.P., will deliver the

inaugural address of the new session at 4.30 r.M. at theinstitute, Judd Street, London, W.C.I. The annual dinnerof the institute will be held the same evening at 7.30 P.M.at Claridges Hotel. To both of these functions past studentsof the institute and of Moorfields Westminster and CentralEye Hospital are invited. Tickets for the dinner (25s.) maybe had from the secretary of the institute.
