OPERATION RICE BOWL: A Lenten program of Catholic Relief Services will be used by our Religious Education students during Lent. The students will bring home a box to be placed in a convenient area in your homes. The idea is to put money in the box, each time you give up something as a sacrifice for Lent. The money will be collected at the end of Lent, and sent to CRS to be used to help the poor and hungry, and those affected by the natural disasters so prevalent in our world today. Prayer sheets will also be sent home, so that you can make this a family Lenten project.
Hope is grounded in Christ’s promise of a bright future. In its full expression, hope directs our gaze toward life eternal. In the present moment hope is experienced when
God is number one in our list of priorities. Hope suffers everything well because it creates the sense that God is in God’s heaven and we are on God’s earth. This is not pious piffle or a sop for the weak, but rather an experience of God’s being in control. This is the experience of ultimate reality. Like love, hope endures all things.
That’s because God makes all things right. In the Holy Spirit, we live in right relationship with God, ourselves and others. Baptism removes sin and restores this right relationship. It was in this right relationship of trust in God, myself and others that I served a missionary year in southern Mexico in 1980 before priesthood ordination. I was open to learning and did I ever. Missionaries explain that there’s a “sensitization” to another culture and people. This occurs only when one is there long enough, open enough, and learning not only the gifts but the sins of another culture and people.
That’s when we take others “for real”. We notice them, pay attention to them, and care for them, as much as we do for any group of people.
I suggest we notice, pay attention to, and care for Hispanics in our county. Similarly, I challenge Hispanics to integrate in our community, while bringing their native culture to the table. Together, we are enhanced.
When I was assigned as Rector of the Cathedral of St. Andrew by Bishop Rose in 1994, he asked me to start the Mass in Spanish. Before long the Mass in Spanish had standing room only; more than one thousand people attending. My parents, grey haired as they were then (I’m just taking after them), pointed out that they were all black haired heads at the Spanish Mass.
It’s like here, in that our Anglo parishioners are mostly retired, and our Latino parishioners are mostly young with kids. This is reflected in our Shelby and Hart public schools, where most of the students are Hispanic.
Most of the parishioners in the mid 1990’s at St. Andrew’s Cathedral embraced having large numbers of Hispanics celebrating Mass there. Some few left for nearby all-white parishes, saying that “The Hispanics are taking over the Cathedral.” Some few Anglo parishioners did not want any interaction. But most embraced the diversity. Many chose to go beyond the occasional shared liturgies of Christmas Eve, Holy Days, Holy Week and Ash Wednesday. They sought social and educational ways to interact, learn about, and experience the Hispanic culture. When, after nine years, I left the Cathedral the waters were calm, people content and parish life was operating smoothly. Although such a process takes time, it is hastened by noticing our neighbors, paying attention to them, and caring for them. Not only, as Jesus preached, is the Kingdom of God among us - so also is the future of the Catholic Church in Oceana County among us.
There’s hope for a bright future. Peace, Fr. Tom
