Lesson 1
Moments I remember
Childhood memories: Read and listen what Andr Silva, a student from Brazil,
tells us about his childhood.
When my sister and I were younger, we used to fight a lot. My
parents, whom I love very much, always spanked us when the
fight was serious, and some of our fights were very serious. Once,
when we were fighting, she got a knife and ran to me.
During another fight, I hit her in the stomach with my knee. It took
a while for her to breathe normally again. We couldn't play any kind of game together
without fighting. Nowadays, we just scream at each other, but there are no fights.
We didn't always fight when we were younger. When we were getting along, weused to play at our grandmother's house, where there were many trees that we could
climb and sit in all day long. In front of my grandmother's house, there was a kind of park
where many children could go and play whatever they wanted to. We liked to play there.
My grandma was always telling us to get more like swimming, climbing trees, or
running around the park. My sister, whom I now love, and I never liked to do any kind of
exercise, so we were always finding excuses for us not to do it.
My grandma never believed us. Once, I didn't want to do what she told me to do,
and she locked me in the bathroom for two hours. After those two hours, she asked me
if I wanted to do it or if I would like to spend two more hours there. That was a funny
experience for me.

I used to drive to work (but I dont now)
Past situations or states (now they have changed)
She used to have short hair (now she has a different hairstyle)

My Cats and Dogs
Olga Marek from RussiaWhen I was a child, I liked walking around the neighbourhood. I would leave
home and go to the yard which was in front of our house. I used to play with stray cats
and dogs. They didn't have owners and were always waiting for me in the street. I
trained them. We played games which could be called "teachers and students", "doctors
and patients", "sellers and buyers", "robbers and their leader", and so on.
Then, my mother forbade me to play with homeless cats and dogs. She was
shocked when I came home with "my friends" following me. She shouted at me, and I
swore that it would never happen again. However, she found me once again in my room
with my dogs playing a game: "the chorus and the orchestra."
The problem was that I didn't want to do anything but play the piano, play with the
animals, and hang around the streets. My mom was in despair. Then my Dad suggested
to buy me a dog and said that they would walk and play with me after their work. For my
part, I had to prepare my homework before they came home.

Must vs have to
Both mustand have tocan be used to speak about obligation or necessity:
The doctor says I muststop smoking.
The doctor says I have tostop smoking.
This is only the case when we are referring to the present or future. When we
speak about obligation or necessity in the past, we use have to.
She had tostop running because she was exhausted.
I had topay a parking fine.
It is not possible to use mustin this way.
Mustand havetohave a similar meaning. They express necessity or obligation.
Butdo you remember when to use mustnt?
Must not vs not have toWhen used in the negative, mustand have tohave different meanings. Mustis
used to say that something is prohibited, while have tois used to express a lack of
obligation or necessity.
You mustn't cross the road here. (It is prohibited)
You don't have tocross the road here. (It's not necessary, i.e. you can stay on

Lesson 3
Another brick in the wall
Read the following text:
At school for 17 hours a day.
Its 6.30 am and the sun has only just come up when the alarm clocks next to Jie
Suns bed ring simultaneously. She gets out of bed and goes to the kitchen. Her eyes
half closed, she hardly says a word while she eats breakfast. Next to the table, it is her
blue school bag which she packed the night before. It weights just over six kilos and a
half. At 7.00 am she says goodbye to her parents and sets off to her school, just outside
the capital city, Seoul. She returns home at 6.00 pm for dinner, but half an hour later
she leaves home again for a private academy where she studies for another four hours.
In a typical night she gets home at midnight and falls asleep, completely exhausted.
Studying for 17 hours a day is a fact of life for South Korean secondary school
students. They live in a society where education is very important, and there is great
competition for a place at university. Getting a good degree from a top university is the
only way to be sure of getting a professional well-paid job. The normal secondary
school day, as in most other countries, lasts eight hours. But after that, most parents
make their children stay at school for extra classes. In theory, these classes are
optional, but in practice they are compulsory. When the school day ends, the children
are not allowed to relax and enjoy themselves. Most of them have to study all eveningin libraries, with private tutors or at private academies.

Classes of 50 are not uncommon and the teachers are strict. Pupils have to
repeat after the teacher and memorise everything. Teachers at my school dont give
you any individual attention because they havent got time says Jie Sun. They dont
let us ask questions because they say it is wasted timeYoung people like Jie Sun have almost no social life. They rarely have time to
see their friends, and having a boyfriend or a girlfriend is unthinkable. This lifestyle may
seem very hard to many European school children, who are accustomed to going out
most weekends, and watching TV every evening. But on the other hand, in many
British schools, up to 40% of teenagers leave school with no qualifications and the
prospect of unemployment. So which system is really better?

A business school with a difference:
University education is not enough for Japanese company managers. Today,
many companies like Nissan, Toyota and Sanyo send their managers on a 13-day
course wherefar from sitting at desks studyingthey are subjected to a harsh militarydiscipline which includes forced marches of up to 40 kilometres.
On a typical day, the businessmen, who are used to the comforts of the luxurious
office , have to get up at 4.30 am to do martial arts in their dormitory. They then have
writing and dictation test until 7 am when they are allowed to have breakfast. Work
starts again at 8, after 15 minutes to clean the dormitory. Among other things, they have
to learn to sing in public, to memorize up to 600 meaningless words and repeat them
without mistake, and to stand to attention every time an instructor enters the room. In
the marches, some of which take place at night, they are only allowed to take a torch,
water and rice.
I found it very hard at first says Akira Hashida, a junior sales manager. But
afterwards I was very happy. I felt much more self- confident. The courses are intended
to make the managers stronger both mentally and physically. At the end of the course,
companies receive a report on the strong and weak points of the people sent there, and
the managers who fail will never get promotedthey may even lose their jobs!

What do you think about education in Britain today?
Well, as in all things, theres a good side and a bad side. On the good side, I
think more young people are staying at school and then going on to university than ever
before. And exam results have also got better. Some people say that this is because
exams have got easier, but I dont agree.
On the bad side, well, there are still a lot of young people who leave school
without any qualifications at all, and thats terrible. Also, I think there are more
discipline problems than there used to be, especially with boys.

But the main problem is that there arent enough teachers, especially in some
subjects like Maths and Science. This is partly because very few boys want to become
teachers. Most teachers today are women. But its also because teachers arent paid
enough. I think the government will need to put up teachers salaries very soon, or thingswill only get worse.
