HISTORY
Memristor theory was formulated and named by Leon
Chua in a 1971 paper.Chua strongly believed that a fourthdevice existed to provide conceptual symmetry with the
resistor, inductor, and capacitor.
On30 April , 2008, in HP lab scientist experimentallyproved the existence of Memristor Circuit which is
combination of resistor, inductor and capacitor.

2. What is Memristor?
The memristor, a microscopic component that can
"remember" electrical states even when turned off.
So, we can say that its resistors have memory capabilities.

Facts I
MEMory ResISTOR A non-volatile memory technology
that can change its resistance in varying levels.
Conventional devices use only 0 and 1. Memristor can
use anything between 0 and 1.
Creating an Analog Computer that works much faster
than Digital ones.

Fact II
Pattern recognition and learning is possible withMemristor. (Memristor use to remember the state ofthe last change that was occurred in it after passing
the current, whether power is on or off. )
The worlds smallest memristive switch (50 x 50
nanometers).
The fourth mystery element that joins the capacitor, resistor, and inductor.

Memristor Vs RAM
Memristor RAM
1. Non-Volatile memory 1. Volatile memory
2.Less expensive than RAM 2. More expensive
3. Learning ability 3. No learning ability
4. Future Technology 4. Present Technology
5. Data storage capacity 5. No data storage
without power. power without power.
6. Quicker start up
7. 100 times more density (information/area).

Type of Memristor:
1) Molecular and Ionic Thin Film Memristive Systems
a). Titanium dioxide memristors
b). Polymeric (ionic) memristors
c). Magnetic memristive systemsd). Resonant-tunnelling diode memristors
2) Spin Based and Magnetic memristive systems
a). Spintronic Memristors
b). Spin Torque Transfer (STT) MRAM
3) 3-terminal memristors

Advantages of Memristor I
Has great data density.
Operating outside of 0s and 1s allows it to imitate brainfunctions.
Can create Computer that never has to boot up.
Does not lose information when turned off.

Advantages II Uses less energy and produces less heat.
Has properties which can not be duplicated by the othercircuit elements (resistors, capacitors, and inductors).
Devices storing 100 gigabytes in a square centimeter have
been created using memristors.
Can be use in Artificial Intelligence .

Advantages III
Memristors will theoretically be cheaper and far fasterthan flash memory.
Combine the jobs of working memory and hard drives intoone tiny device.
Based on nanotechnology.
Having computing capabilities etc.

Disadvantages of Memristor1. When a computer is infected with a virus or is not properly
functioning, the memristors may cause the computer to keep
rebooting with the same problem because the memory will notbe lost after reboot.
2. Memristor's ability to learn from patterns, if a bad pattern is
present at an early stage, the computer's problem could growmore worse at a rapid rate.
3. Economically unviable.

Suggestions to Face disadvantages
1. Provide some pre-stored good configuration of system
which can be use by the user when user feels that
there is some bad pattern in the circuit .
2. Invest in R&D of memristor and produce it on big scale.

9. Quiz-1
Question 1: Why memristor is cheaper than RAM but economically
unviable?
Answer: Memristor is cheaper for the end users who will use them via
their systems but in the starting producing memristor will not be viablefor companies because it will change lots of concepts of computer
world.

Quiz-2Question 2: How actually and in what phases it will change the
computer world and will replace present technologies?
Answer: These are the prediction for the future of memristor:
I)Combine with RAM and flash memory (Will start from starting of 2014)
II) Replace Hard disk and RAM at the end of 2020.
III) New version of personal computers will launch with the qualities of
super computers of present time in the staring of 2025.
IV) Brain functionality devices and robots at the end of 2040.
