Overall fluid balance in the human
gastrointestinal tract. About 2 L of
water is ingested each day, and 7 L of
various secretions enters the
gastrointestinal tract. Of this total of 9
L, 8.5 L is absorbed in the small
intestine. About 500 ml is passed on to
the colon, which normally absorbs 80%
to 90% of the water presented to it.

Cellular mechanisms of Ca2+ absorption in the small intestine. Ca2+ crosses the brush border plasma membrane via Ca2+ channels. In the cytosol of the enterocyte, Ca2+ is bound to calbindin. Ca2+ is extruded across the basolateral membrane by a Ca2+-ATPase and an Na+-Ca2+ exchange mechanism. Some Ca2+ is transported through the cytosol in membrane vesicles and released at the basolateral membrane by exocytosis. Berne et al., 2004

Model of inorganic phosphate (HPO4=) transport in the intestine. At the luminal surface of the enterocyte the brush border membrane harbors a 1,25(OH)2D responsive 2Na+/ HPO4= transporter, which has a high affinity for the HPO4=. The vast majority of phosphate absorption occurs via the process of diffusional absorption (...) Factors which may adversely influence the diffusional process are the formation of nonabsorbable calcium, aluminum or magnesium phosphate salts in the intestine and age, which reduces Pi absorption by as much as 50%. http://www.endotext.org/parathyroid/parathyroid2/parathyroidframe2.htm

=) SÃO ACOPLADOS AO ÍON SÓDIO
The vast majority of phosphate absorption occurs via the process of diffusional absorption. This results as a consequence of the relatively low Km of the active transport process (2 mM) and the luminal Pi content during feeding, which generally exceeds 5 mM throughout the intestine even during fasting (10-12). The diffusion is mediated through the paracellular space and, therefore, is primarily a function of Pi intake. Because most diets contain an abundance of Pi, the quantity of phosphate absorbed always exceeds the need. Factors which may adversely influence the diffusional process are the formation of nonabsorbable calcium, aluminum or magnesium phosphate salts in the intestine and age, which reduces Pi absorption by as much as 50%.

5-HT as a mediator of cholera toxin-induced intestinal hypersecretion. 5-HT is released from the enterochromaffin cells, which are the intestinal taste buds. 5-HT stimulates sensory neurones (intrinsic as well as extrinsic primary afferent neurones), which initiates nerve circuits involving the myenteric, submucosal, and mucosal plexuses. Cholinergic and vasoactive intestinal polypeptidergic secretomotor neurones, located in the submucous plexus, are activated via nicotinic, and neurokinin (NK 1 and NK3) receptors. ACh and vasoactive intestinal peptide binds to epithelial receptors and stimulates fluid secretion. Reproduced from (Hansen 1995). Hansen, 2003b

Lipid absorption in the small intestine. Mixed micelles of bile acids and lipid digestion products diffuse through the unstirred layer and among the microvilli. As digestion products are absorbed from free solution by the enterocytes, more digestion products partition out of the micelles. The ability of micelles to diffuse among the microvilli makes the whole surface of the brush border available for lipid absorption. Transport proteins mediate the facilitated transport of fatty acids and cholesterol across the brush border plasma membrane. In the cytosol of the epithelial cell, fatty acids are bound to fatty acid-binding protein and cholesterol is bound to sterol carrier proteins. Levy et al., 2006
