My loyal secretary Francisco de los Cobos, I am now the

most powerful monarch of our time. Now that I am Emperor, I must protect Europe from any kind of threat. I must

ensure its stability.

For his election as Emperor, Charles V had to ask for money to the court of Castille. After a great effort, he obtained it and the people got really angry with him, so they started a rebellion called ‘The Comunidades’ War’. At the same time, in Aragon, the Germanías wanted less privileges for the nobles.

My lord, I must warn you that there are two uprisings… One

in Castille led by Bravo, Padilla and Maldonado, and the other one in Aragon, led

by the Germanías.

They want you to take more into account the interests of

the Spanish people.

How they dare??!! I will fight against them! My tercios will be relentless! They will pay for their treachery!

Charles I sent his army formed by the Tercios against the rebels and defeat the Comunidades in Villalar in 1521, and also the Germanías in 1522.

I want Padilla, Bravo and Maldonado alive!

They will suffer a public execution for their

betrayal!

Our pikes, arquebuse

s and muskets

will destroy them!

For the

King!

Padilla, Bravo and Maldonado were beheaded after their defeat.

We will be an example

of resistance against the

power of the King!

The Germanías were also defeated by Charles I.

The King has won. We, the noble men, will be more

powerful now thanks

to our support to

the Emperor!

The Emperor finished these conflicts in Spain, but in Germany a new problem emerged…

Your grace, sorry for bothering you, but I have bad news. A

German friar named Martin Luther has

written 95 theses in which he reports that the Catholic Church is corrupted! His ideas are breing spread all

over the Empire!

It is hard to fight against your own people, but no one can challenge the Empire. I am the protector of Europe and Christianity! I hope my enemies learnt the lesson!

What?! A simple friar dares to defy my power and the

holiness of the Catholic Church?! I

will show my people that I am a merciful emperor. I will talk to Luther and I will ask him to retract himself.

Charles I of Spain and V of the Holy Roman Empire met Luther in the Worm’s Diet in 1521.

So you are the friar who wrote those lies… I have been looking forward to meeting you. I am asking you this kindly: retract yourself

now and we can end this peacefully once and for all.

Your Highness, I have seen the corruption of the

Catholic Church in first person and I am afraid I cannot do what you ask

me. My duty is to do what our lord Jesuchrist taught

us. I am so sorry. All right, Luther, I am

forced to use my power to defend Catholicism.

There will be war.

The rule of Charles I of Spain and V of the Holy Roman Empire was not being easy. Besides these previous conflicts, the Ottoman sultan Suleiman the

Magnificent wanted to conquer Europe and he decided to attack Viena. The Emperor asked for help to his brother, the king of Hungary and Bohemia

Ferdinand I to break the siege. My highly esteemed brother, I need your help to keep Europe safe. The Ottoman Empire is

awaits.Your Grace, you can count on me to

deffend Europe from those invaders.

Together we will save Europe and Christianity.

With their combined strength, the Emperor Charles V and his brother, the king of Hungary and Bohemia Ferdinand I, defeated the Ottomans and broke

the siege of Viena. Suleiman the Magnificent had to go back.

Look! It’s the Emperor

Charles V and his brother! They have

come to help us! God bless

them!!

We must go back!! We

cannot defeat the imperial army and its

tercios!

We have won the battle, my devoted

secretary. My rule is being

hard. How is the conquest of

America going?

The conquest is being very quick, my Majesty. Our firearms are powerful and the reports say that the Amerindians think that our soldiers are gods. The best ones are Hernán Cortes and Francisco Pizarro. We have sent also priests to spread Christianism. We are also teaching them our language. America is giving us a lot of wealth!

Thank you very much, Francisco. I hope

America give us more riches.
