Types of Funding

Plan from the beginning! Don’t wait until after the admissions decision is made.

• Two types of aid: need-based and merit-based • Need-blind admissions: full need met

• Need-based, with limits to maximum amount given

• Standard, flat amount

• Earmarked: countries, majors

• Out-of-state tuition waivers

• Private, liberal arts colleges tend to provide the most aid



Need-Based Aid: Family Funding

• The family is expected to contribute as much as they can afford.

• Be realistic

• The more you need, the more competition you will face.

• Don’t ask for more than you genuinely need



Athletic Scholarships

• Requires demonstrated ability

• Basic academic competence is required

• Learn NCAA rules

• Correspond directly with coaches

• Send a video or DVD of performance



Before You Apply

• Each school has its own budget and policy

• Determine your contribution • Admission with financial aid can be ten times more

competitive than admission without aid

• Consider different types of institutions • Public vs. Private vs. Community College

• Remember the additional costs: application fees, postage, exams
