Panel no. 8: THE PROPHECY

This representation of themilitaristic Aztecs, carrying onthe aggressive theme of "Migration", corresponds to theEuropean conquerors on theother end of this wall (Number7--"The Prophecy"). It islikewise analogous to the firstpanel in Part II (Number 8--"Cortez and the Cross"), theconquering Europeans beingthere represented in Cortez. In this Aztec group, the warriorscarry banners of silver and feathers. Tribal emblems, theeagle and the tiger, are distinguishable. The plumed-serpent motif appears, thesymbol of Quetzalcoatl, in thestone carving at the base of thepanel.

The concluding panel in Part I isthe symbol of Europeancivilization and the Spanishconquest, depicting armoredwarriors, armored horses, and an armored cross, against a composition of columns and representing capitals as symbols of Europeanarchitecture. Thesearchitectural symbols referback to the stone carving of theplumed serpent in the panel at the opposite end (Number 3--"Aztec Warriors"). TheQuetzalcoatl culture is bound in by these two aggressive endpanels. The conquest by theEuropeans is the impliedprophecy of Quetzalcoatl.

This panel was conceived byOrozco in close relationship to thenext one, "Hispano-America". In these two panels, Orozco attempted to focus upon thedistinct but complementarycontributions to an as yetunrealized synthetic new worldculture, of the English who settledin the north and the Latins whoestablished themselves in thesouth. He selected and interpretedin his own way the town meetingand school teacher to representAnglo-American attributes of cooperation, deliberation, reasonableness, discipline. He introduces as parts of the Anglo-American scene the red barn, thecombination meeting-house and school-house, school children, a wheat-field.

Orozco represents in thispanel the Latin-American peasant, self-sufficient and rebellious against imperialistoppression, as possessingattributes desirable in themselves and complementary to theattributes represented in theAnglo-American panel. He suggests here the "right toprotest" as something closeto the heart of a free people. There is a close color kinshipwith the preceding panel, most obviously apparent in the heap of coin whichreflects the gold of the wheat-field.
