One of the first Rock en Espaol bands in Colombia, Los Aterciopelados is one of the Latin American country's top groups. The recipients of Grammy award nominations in 1997 and 1998, the band has fused its own sound by combining a rock-solid approach with a variety of Latin American musical traditions including mariachi, bolero, tropical and flamenco. Los Aterciopelados, whose name translates as "the Velvety Ones," was formed by former members of Delia Y Los Aminoacidos -- Andrea Echeberry, who plays acoustic guitar and sings lead, and Hctor Buitrago, who plays bass. Original drummer Andres Giraldo was replaced by Alejandro Duque in 1995 and original guitar player Charlie Marquez was replaced by Alejandro Gomez Caceras in 1997. Gozo Poderoso was issued in early 2001.eng - MusicMatch_BioAterciopelados Biography

The founding members of Aterciopelados, Andrea Echeverri and Hector Buitrago, originally teamed up in Bogota, Colombia, in 1990 as Delia Y Los Aminoacidos. Buitrago came from a hardcore rock background, heading a group called La Pesitilencia, while Echeverri had been trying to shake off her pop-bolero background by going underground. They once ran one of Bogota's only rock clubs, and although they were at first romantically involved, their relationship became a purely artistic partnership. Their early work, as typified by their first release, Con El Corazon En La Mano, is a noisefest of ringing, distorted guitars and a pummelling punk drumbeat. However, beginning with their second album, El Dorado, Aterciopelados began to expand their sound, adding traditional "llanera" rhythms of the Colombian countryside, as well as the flamenco-bolero sound of their first big hit, "Bolero Falaz".With its insistent rhythm and ardent lyrics, "Bolero Falaz' broke the band on MTV Latino and made them stars throughout Latin America. After releasing their third album, the Grammy Award-nominated La Pipa De La Paz, Aterciopelados toured the USA, where they recorded an MTV Unplugged appearance in early 1997. La Pipa De La Paz"s songs demonstrated an evolution of the band's sound, and Phil Manzanera's production brought out the crisp intensity of the music. The following year's Caribe Atomico was recorded in Manhattan, New York with guest appearances by guitarists Arto Lindsay and Marc Ribot. Also nominated for a Grammy award, this album expanded their sound with elements of drum 'n' bass and jungle. The band's sixth album, Gozo Poderoso, won a Latin Grammy for Best Rock En Espanol Album.

Echeverri and Buitrago have become one of the best songwriting teams in Latin Alternative, creating a bold voice for Latin American women, as well as speaking out against the violence and environmental threats wracking their home country.

Andrea Echeverri's poetic, socially conscious lyrics and Hector Buitrago's knack for creating a musical melting pot of Latin rhythms, Colombian folk, and electronic sensibilities define their style. Aterciopelados are currently on tour in support of Evolucin, a greatest hits collection featuring three new songs. The release marks the follow up to their Grammy-nominated fifth album Gozo Poderoso (Powerful Joy), which won the Latin Grammy for Best Rock en Espaol Album. (Their Latin Grammy statuette is currently on display at the National Colombian Museum thanks to a suggestion from one of their fans).

Formed in the early '90s, Aterciopelados pioneered the Colombian rock scene in their hometown of Bogota. Quickly establishing themselves as innovative and experimental, their sound has moved through various styles--from distorted guitar punk to textured electronic sounds--incorporating and blending into all their musical layers more traditional Colombian and Latin American rhythms.
