HIPAA ComplianceYour Benefit in Knowing

HIPAA Audits are becoming the norm for many Healthcare organizations. The office of Health and Human Services (under the umbrella of the Office of Civil Rights) has found a way to provide funding for programs such as Medicaid, Medicare and other “meaningful use” projects. The following are a few key facts that would benefit you to know, in addition to your company for being HIPAA compliant.

For every dollar the government spends on HIPAA Audits, they receive twenty dollars back in fines. HIPAA auditor’s are typically outsourced and they become the “judge, jury and executioner” in terms of

what is “in breach” and what will be fined. The amount of HIPAA breaches has grown from 9,500 in 2011 to an estimated 75,000 for 2015. Each

breach averages a $50,000 fine, or for 2015 over $3.75B in total revenue. A breach happens most often by the people who work for the Healthcare organization or by one of its

Business Associates (BA). The following are just a few business attributes that can lead to a HIPAA breach:

Sharing passwords or too many Administrative Passwords Passwords not complex or updated No “auto log-off” or screen saver and no back-up policies enforced Verbal discussion of Personal Healthcare Information (PHI) that can be overheard and/or visible via
