Títu lo Engineering Analysis with vague and imprecise information

Resumen Risk and uncertainties are of rapidly growing concern and importance in the light of aquickly growing complexity and changes in our natural and technical environment, economy and society. It has become obvious that approaches to deal with risk anduncertainties in a complex environment can only be effective and efficient when weembark on multi-disciplinary concepts to build our models most realistically. Failure toconsider phenomena in such a broad manner can easily lead to unexpected collapseof various natures and to disasters. This seminar provides insight in the multi-disciplinary approaches pursued in the Institute for Risk & Uncertainty in theUniversity of Liverpool. Then, some engineering-mathematical aspects of uncertaintyquantification are discussed in the context of vague and imprecise information.Concepts of imprecise probabilities are explained and demonstrated by means ofexamples. Focus is on fuzzy probabilities. It is illustrated how the model features canbe utilised in practical applications, where critical decisions have to be derived.

Michael Beer graduated with a doctoral degree in Civil Engineering from theTechnische Universität Dresden, Germany. As a Feodor-Lynen Fellow of the

Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation Dr. Beer pursued research at Rice University(Houston, TX, USA) together with Professor Pol D. Spanos. From 2007 to 2011 heworked as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil & EnvironmentalEngineering, National University of Singapore. His research is focused on non-traditional uncertainty models in engineering with emphasis on reliability analysis andon robust design. Dr. Beer is a Member of ASME and its Research Committee onRisk Technology, Mamber of ASCE and Charter Member of its EngineeringMechanics Institute, Member of the European Association for Structural Dynamics,Member of the European Safety and Reliability Association, Member of IACM, Editorin Chief of the Encyclopedia of Earthquake Engineering (Springer), Associate Editorof the International Journal of Reliability and Safety, Associate Editor of the ASCE-
