3. Moving from subject to topic:
Many writing assignments begin as broad area of interest or
concern. These general subject always need to be narrowed tospecific topic that can be reasonably discussed within the limit
of assignment.
E.G.:
As these eample illustrate! a topic does more then narrow a
general subject. a topic also defines the manner in which you willtreat a subject.

c. Looping: (ooping is the practice of doing free writing and revising the
subject matter ma$ing it more and more specific. )t can produce a great deal
of useful information and help us to decide on a wor$able topic to write an
essay.
*. Find something to say
+rainstorming and journal writing are useful tools for generating
ideas! and both strategies can be helpful at this stage of the writing
process and whenever we need to find something to say.
a Brainstorming: #e can brainstorm in a group echanging idea with
several students in our composition class and writing down the useful
idea that come up or we can ,uic$ly write down every fact and idea that
relates to our topic.
b Journal writing: -ournal writing can be useful source of idea of any
stage of writing process. Many writers routinely $eep a journal jotting
down eperience or eploring idea they may want to use when they

'. Grouping ideas (clustering):
lustering is a way of visually arranging your ideas that you
can tell at a glance where ideas belong and whether or notyou easier stage of witting process. )t is especially useful for
identifying a major point and seeing how idea fits together .
/. Making an informal outline: As an alternative or fellow up to clustering you can
organi0e your notes from brainstorming or other invention
techni,ue into an informal outline! ,uite often an informal
outline is just a list of your major points perhaps presented insome tentative orders.
