13th Edition the International Film
Festival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
So yet another year has gone by and here we are again, revving up the engines in preparation for the dates eagerly
awaited by the film-lovers of the island, the International Film Festival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. This 13th Edition,
the first that I have had the pleasure of presiding over as Lord Mayor of the city, pose the double challenge of
presenting new and innovative cycles and contents while consolidating this event in the film world, to guarantee a
week of the seventh art for all film makers and fans.
True, this edition is equally plagued by the clouds of austerity hanging over all activities at present, making it even
more essential for the team responsible for organisation to pull out all the plugs and to display vast realms of creativity
and imagination to guarantee a splendid scenario for an event that has already placed Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
in a prime position on the map of film festivals. The present Town Council is squarely behind the initiative that is one
of the most relevant events in the cultural life of the city and excellent promotion for the tourism we have on offer.
Fruit of the effort and dedication of the professionals working in the sector of film and the film festival is the fact that
various of the members of the community have achieved, thanks to the launching pad of the festival, international
fame and recognition. It is a motive of great pride for us that BLACKTHORN, the film by Mateo Gil, that was chosen
to inaugurate the International Film Festival here last year, recently walked off with four Goyas, one of which wasgiven to the islander, Andrés Santana for best Production. This year, we are proud to be able to have us here with us
again, in one of the parallel activities organised by the Festival on the 13th March.
The Festival grows in artistic quality and contents, year by year. There are many novelties this year, such as the cycle
devoted to Silent Movies that highlights the eternal ‘present’ of these gold-standard values of the past, revisiting
treasures from days gone by that are as solid and identifiable as they were back then. Priority has been given to reels
that have been recovered miraculously or remade over the last few years. Then there is the cycle that pays tribute
to independent films in the States, Film Comment Selects, together with retrospectives devoted to the directors,
Bernard Émond and Sergie Loznitsa.
This 13th edition of the International Film Festival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is all of an opportunity for us to
get together and enjoy the intensive cultural pleasure of ten days of the best in international film. Come and join us.
It’s not to be missed.

A SOLID PROPOSAL
The International Film Festival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is celebrating its thirteenth edition this year, in the
conviction that over the years of its existence it has contributed towards establishing a growing audience for in-
dependent film productions, one of the major objectives from the outset. These film fans are interested in seeing
something outside the classic commercial cinema menu served up by the larger and more conventional production
houses. In itself a meaningful objective, the promotion of independent ventures off the beaten path has been a ban-
ner for publishing the name of our city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria worldwide.
Thanks to the solid professional expertise of the team responsible for the organisation over these years, the Festival
has built up a reputation as one of the most coherent and original proposals on offer in Spain. The Festival is wellknown for its artistic rigour and exacting quality demands, even when faced with the inevitable cuts on cultural ac-
tivities that accompany economic crises. Add to that the difficulty entrained in organising an event in a community
on the margins, in an ultra-peripheral region, and its excellent programme can be seen to be even more of a shining
example and model of effective management.
This year the event is to be celebrated in the old historical part of the city in order to invite the residents to partici-
pate, by setting up open-air cinema. We are also going to have a new ‘space’ with the collaboration of Casa África
and the screening of contemporary African film. The Josefina de la Torre Chair, a section devoted to films by wo-
men and about women is also a must on the agenda together with the four retrospectives devoted respectively to
the Belarusian film-maker, Sergei Loznitsa, the Canadian director, Bernard Émond, vanguard silent movies and the
famous US film review, Film Comment, whose editorial board have designed a programme showcasing the most
representative and innovative films of the Seventies.
On behalf of the Secretariat for Culture on the Town Council and as President of the Sociedad de Promoción, it is a
pleasure for me, therefore, to give you and the other thousands of spectators that will fill the cinemas of the Mono-
pol, Cicca, Casa de Colón and Guiniguada as of the 16th March, the warmest of welcomes. We hope you have the
most pleasant of stays in our city over the eight long days and nights of this innovative and promising edition of the
Film Festival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

IN LINE WITH THE TIMESNot even in our wildest dreams could we have imagined a
short time back that we would be plunged into the tragic and
turgid circumstances of crisis that we are now experiencing
the world over due to the global economic panorama. Reality
has surpassed the flights of fantasy of fiction launched from
Hollywood, films that have identified the industry. This is no
flight of fantasy, no science fiction, this is real and it threatens
to upturn, directly or indirectly, the world as we know it. We
are running out of time to pay off our debts from the past
and we are coming to understand that either we change tackor we will run aground, without any further possibility of ta-
king sail and exploring other horizons in the future.
Faced with this bitter reality where the only thing that is clear
is that nothing is clear and the only thing sure is that the-
re can be no such thing as security, where everything with
which we are familiar seems doomed to extinction or, at best,
to a drastic and unavoidable process of destructive recrea-
tion, the International Film Festival of Las Palmas de Gran
Canaria has also been forced to submit itself to a brutal sur-
gical overhaul in order to avoid becoming one more victim ofthe crisis. This process has led us to establish a rigorous list of
priorities, among other far-reaching measures, and to tem-
porarily divest ourselves of any aspect not immediately coin-
cident with the major objectives established at the outset of
this Festival: in other words, to offer a platform for another
type of film and cinema, more spontaneous, innovative and
inventive than the commercial ventures of Hollywood, the
work of dozens of filmmakers whose final goal is none other
than to offer permanent reflection on ethics and aesthetics
in our torn world, to allow us to understand where we are
going, why and how.
The difficult times we face force us, then, to concentrate all
of our efforts towards preserving the artistic identity of our
Festival and to shed temporarily all such elements as do not
contribute towards true learning and intellectual stimulation
that are nevertheless valuable but not so invaluable as to me-
rit their extra cost, above all the present time. We believe that
these changes, not cuts, will allow us to continue along
the road of serious commitment towards new values that we
have traced for ourselves over the last thirteen years. In the
strictest sense of cultural value and values, the Festival will
continue to offer great films in each and every one of its sec-
tions and the publications, although somewhat diminished in
quantity, will continue to be the hallmark quality editions for
which our Festival has been famous year after year.
Our famous retrospective cycles, one of the staple identi-
fying features of our Festival, on account of their fresh pers-
pectives, originality and scope, offer this year Los modernos:
la eterna actualidad del cine mudo (Modern Chestnuts or
the Eternal Presence (Presents) of Silent Movies) a histori-cal view of film, carefully selected and coordinated by the
lecturer and critic, Francisco J. Ponce, and offering all of the
trademarks of our festival as of its first edition: innovation,
professional rigour and a highly exacting choice of films.
Film lovers will be offered a feast of some thirty silent fea-
ture films, all of an exceptional opportunity to contemplate
what is probably the most representative anthology of the
silent movies on offer in our country, of a part of film history
that was highly productive and that pushed back the fron-
tiers of film language, embarking upon experiments and van-
guard movements that even nowadays excite the admirationof some of the most famous names in contemporary cinema.
The Belarusian director, Sergei Loznitsa and the French Ca-
nadian, Bernard Émond, authors of some of the most ap-
plauded films in independent cinema will be the subjects of
respective retrospectives together with the prestigious US
review Film Comment, whose editorial board have organised
a cycle in line with the prevailing philosophy of the review
defended by the editor. Together with Casa África, we will
also be opening up a new window onto the world of African
contemporary film. Another first will be the creation of the
Josefina de la Torre Chair, a whole new space for screening
of and debates on films made by and about women, coor-
dinated by the COCAI (Canary Communicators for Equali-
ty). The whole programme is completed with our traditional
competitive sections, The Magic Lantern and The Freakiest
Night (Mega Freak Out). We hope that, despite all adversi-
ty, you will be able to appreciate with us that the only way
forward is to stand firm and to back quality film that helps us
to cultivate a more sensitive, critical and observant vision in
our everyday lives.

Renowned for his personal and refined style, Aranda was one of the founder members of the School of Barcelona, avanguard movement looking to creatively renew the Spanish film scene. He quickly became known for his adapta-tions of contemporary Spanish novels, above all, those of Juan Marsé and for his critical exploration of thorny socialissues. Born in Barcelona, Aranda dropped out of formal schooling at the age of 14 and made his début in the filmworld, as a self-made film director, in the co-directed film called BRILLANTE PORVENIR (BRILLIANT FUTURE) IN1964. How daring his proposals could be was made manifest in his next film FATA MORGANA (1966), the visual styleof which was inspired by TV ads and comics.
Various interesting proposals were to follow until in the Eighties, he was to direct FANNY PELOPAJA (FANNY STRAW-TOP) (1983), selected in the Festival of San Sebastian and EL LUTE (CAMINA O REVIENTA) (EL LUTE: DO OR DIE),finished in late June 1987. El LUTE was selected to represent Spain in the Festival of San Sebastian with the two main
actors, Imanol Arias and Victoria Abril winning the awards for Best Actor and Best Actress respectively. At the endof the same year, he began to film the second part, EL LUTE (MAÑANA SERÉ LIBRE) (EL LUTE: TOMORROW I WILLBE FREE), selected for the official section of the Festival de Cannes 1988 and the year that Aranda won the NationalFilmmakers Award. Of the adaptations of Marsé’s work in film, the most impressive is SI TE DICEN QUE CAÍ (IF THEYTELL YOU I FELL) (1989).
In the decade of the 90s, Aranda continued to make films that were box-office hits, exhibited in cinemas the worldover. LOS AMANTES (LOVERS) (1990), starring Victoria Abril, was inspired by real events that occurred towards theend of the 40s. In 1994, his film LA PASIÓN TURCA (TURKISH PASSION) became one of the biggest box-office hitsin Spain of all times. Likewise, LA MIRADA DEL OTRO (THE NAKED EYE) (1997) was received with tremendous ac-colades in various international festivals. In 1996, Aranda directed an epic homage to the women who bravely gavetheir lives for their cause in the Spanish Civil War, with the film LIBERTARIAS (FREEDOM FIGHTERS) (1996). In theSpring of 1999, he filmed CELOS (JEALOUSY), starring Aitana Sánchez Gijón and Luis Tosar.
In early November 2000, he began filming JUANA LA LOCA (MADNESS OF JOAN). The film was presented in the
Festival of San Sebastián 2001 and won the Best Actress Award (The Silver Shell) for Pilar López de Ayala. In October2003, CARMEN was first screened to great success. TIRANTE (THE MAIDENS’ CONSPIRACY) (2007), based on thenovel Tirant lo Blanc, LOLITA’S CLUB (2007), based on a novel by Juan Marsé, and LUNA CALIENTE (2010) are hislatest full-feature films directed.

THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL follows a group of British retirees who decide to “outsource” their retirement
to less expensive and seemingly exotic India. Enticed by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel, they

forever transformed by their shared experiences, discovering that life and love can begin when you let go of the past.

AMNISTIAAmnesty
Sinopsis / Synopsis
This is the story of a man and a woman in Albania. Their two partners are both in custody, but reforms in the penal
system allow married couples to meet once a month for sexual contact. At first the film spins these two narrative
threads alongside each other and then ties them together artfully. The two meet by chance in the prison and start
a tender love affair that looks set to end when their partners are freed in an amnesty. The film depicts the life of its
protagonists in today’s Albania, which is marked by unemployment, economic hardship and patriarchal structures.
