with displays and demon-strations from current students on painting, finger knitting and more. The event closed with the burying of a time capsule in the newly renovated memorial garden. It was a great opportunity to reach out and show the local community that Conejo School is still going strong after 135 years. That the legacy left by alumni, principals and teachers of the past continues today in the innovation of our programs and the enthusiasm of our staff. We have lots to be proud of and understanding the rich history of our school will hopefully bring us inspiration for many more years to come.
Conejo Elementary's 135th Celebration in April brought alumni from every generation onto campus. The mayor of Thousand Oaks, representatives from the Ventura County Fire Department, local fire station, and Ventura County Sheriffs joined in to help host the event. Judy Widick Sheely, from the class of 1959, shared fond memories of her days at Conejo, including tales of the Pet & Hobby Show, which was an annual event at the school for over 50 years. Miriam Sprankling, curator of history from the Stagecoach Inn Museum, told the story of Conejo School, from its beginnings as a one-room schoolhouse in 1877 to its current building and location at Conejo School Road. On display were exhibits from the museum, and memorabilia dating back as early as the 1930s from the school's archives and the Thousand Oaks Library's Special Collections. Exhibits included a slide show of historic photos and a video of the 1976 100th anniversary at Conejo. The Pet & Hobby Show returned to Conejo

Our Memorial Garden had a makeover this year thanks to a $5,000 Community Enhancement Grant from the City of Thousand Oaks. The new garden was dedicated on April 12 as part of Conejo's 135th Celebration. It was originally built in 1996 in memory of Linda Musella, who was a principal at Conejo and an educator for over thirty years. The next year, a plaque was added in honor of Emily Avery, who was also an educator for 30 years. Plans began this fall to renovate the garden with the goal of having an inviting space for students to enjoy the outdoors and learn about plants, composting and how things grow. The new garden has raised beds with hoses where the kids can watch their plants grow and take care of them, benches that convert to desks and a circle of tree stumps for students to gather. It is also the home of a time capsule recently buried to commemorate the school's 135th anniversary. The project, headed up by parent Kelly Kazmirchuk, was a community effort. Olwyn Kingery, a local landscape designer, donated her time to help create a plan for the grant. Students also gave their input, and the work was completed by staff, parents and students from Conejo, and families from the Conejo Valley Church of Christ, who donate community service days to Conejo each year. The city grant paid for the benches, planters and other supplies, along with a $100 donation from Lowes. The garden is a beautiful upgrade for our campus and is already inspiring students to explore nature and care for the earth.
