ABSTRACTS
Thomas Hillerkuss, "Valuations and tributes of the indian communities in the province of Avalos 1535-1555."
The Province of Avalos, located in what is now the Mexican state of Jalisco, offers a number of significant topics for the study of New Spain regional history. These include the curious biographies of its first "encomenderos", the continual activities of its Franciscan missionaries and the teeming indigenous population, which provided tribute to the Spanish Crown.
The article briefly analyzes tribute activity from Province of Avalos between 1535 and 1555. Documents from the Archivo General de Indias show that tribute was almost always delivered punctually by the Indians, and also provide valuable information regarding the charges levied and remissions granted by the Royal Treasury to those responsible for its collections. The results of the study offer insigths into important events in the economic, social and political history ofthe region, such as the Mixton War, the funding ofNew Galicia's diocese and its first Royal Treasury.
John Sullivan, "The congregation as a disciplinary technology in the xvIth century".
"Congregation", in its three modes of population concentration, and municipalization and hierarchization of settlements, was a mechanism of spatial reorganization which distributed individuals and groups to different places and functions, and constituted the prerequisite step for the instituting of Latin American colonial subjection processes. Michel Foucault has stated that the application of capitalist disciplinary technologies began in Europe at the dawn of the Seventeenth Century; however, these technologies actually first appeared in late Fifteenth and early Sixteenth century America with the spatial redistribution of populations undertaken by the Spaniards after each regional conquest.
María Luisa Rodríguez Sala, "Diego Osorio de Peralta, man of the

baroque period, author of the first N ew Spain anatomy book as a teaching text" .
The character being discussed in this artide was one of the most distinguished doctors ofthe second half ofNew Spain 17th century. His importance lies in having been "criollo" (a Spaniard born in the New World), and one of the first who dedicated himself to medical practice as a professional activity. Throughout his life he studied in the most outstanding institutions ofhigher learning of the New Spain, taught at the Royal University, was author of scientific works, fundamentally of the first Anatomy book for teaching, exercised his profession in confraternities and hospitals and was member of the two most important institutions of professional control, the Tribunal of the Holy Office and the Protomedicato.
In the development of these activities, Osorio y Peralta was part of a growing science community, where not only interchanges and recognitions of perspectives and knowledge were produced, but also where conflictive situations would arise expressed in envy, hate, intrigue and disputes.
Juan Carlos Reyes G., "Folk medicine and sorcery in the villa of Colima in the 17th century".
In response to the General Edict of the Faith emitted in 1732, the neighbors of the villa of Colima presented themselves before the commissary of the Holy Office of the Inquisition in order to "relieve their consciences". Of the varied accusations made stand out in abundance those referring to practices of sorcery, folk medicine, witchcraft, and in a special way, everything related to love magic.
This paper makes a compilation of the most recurring practices and beliefs and an analysis of their characteristic elements. The result aIlows us to conclude that two centuries after the conquest the indigenous magical thinking had permeated the mentality of all the social estates. Likewise, the analysis demonstrates the survival and predominance of the indigenous traditional medicine over the European; it points out the way in which the practitioner was characterized, in a circumstantial manner, as a sorcerer or healer -doctor, herbalist or midwife- and the existence of a clear distinction between these and the witch.
ABSTRAeTS 13
Antonio García de León, "Indians ofthe Florida in the Old Veracruz: an episode of the decadence of Spain before England".
This article covers the origin and evolution ofthe town ofSan Carlos, near the Old Veracruz, created in order to settle 40 families of Yamase and Appalachian Indians proceeding from the area around Panzacola. They abandoned their settlement because of the surrendering of part of the N orth American Southwest to England, due to the Paris treaties of 1763. The author describes and comments the happenings that caused this migration, the cultural traits that these Indians brought with them, the different attitudes of the authorities regarding their presence and the possibilities that they might have contributed to the defense of the coast, as well as the slow and gradual integration ofthe inhabitants ofSan Carlos in the New Spain society.
Gisela von Wobeser, "The social and economic function of the chaplaincies of mass in the New Spain of the 17th century."
The article concerns the chaplaincies of mass, an old Spanish institution transplanted into the New World, which had as its purpose to assure the celebration of a certain number of masses for the benefit ofthe soul ofits founder. The author describes its formal characteristics and its functioning in the New Spain, concluding that it regards an institution which permeated the whole of society and had religious, familiar, economic and legal implications. She maintains that its extended use was due to the needs of a society in which people tried to guarantee the subsistence of their families and descendants through life pensions, since this allowed the support of a part of the clergy. Finally, she considers that the chaplaincies were one of the main sources of capital, and at the same time constituted an impediment for the development of sorne productive sectors, mainly agriculture and livestock, which had to destine part of their income to the payment of interest rates.
Virginia Guedea, "The organization ofthe Department ofthe North: The Plains of Apan and the Mountain Range of Puebla during the Independence."
The present article forms part of a more extensive research about the insurgence in the Plains of Apan and the Mountain Range of

Puebla. This paper covers particularly one of the aspects of the insurgent movement of the region: of its supposed disorder and lack of control of those insurgents and realists that left behind abundant mentions, and who remained abundantly registered in the historiography of the first half of the 19th century. These characteristics, however, are not as clear according to the documentation generated in the region.
Luis González Rodríguez and María del Carmen Anzures, "Martín Pérez and the ethnography of Sinaloa towards the end of the 16th and beginnings of the 17th century".
The "Relation ... " that is published and commented here concerns the ethnography of the inhabitants of Sinaloa, the distribution of Spanish and Indian villages on the basin of the Sinaloan rivers and describes the beginnings of the ]esuit evangelization. In the ¡ntroduction to the text the editor arguments and proves that the author of the "Relation ... " was the religious ]esuit Martín Pérez.
