Menschen, die im Engadin aufgewachsen sind, tragen seine

getan hat, mit welchem Können oder welcher Intensität auch

immer man sich bewegen will, das Engadin bietet alles, und

zwar vor der Haustüre.

Das Engadin lässt in Bezug auf Sport und Well-

ness keinerlei Wünsche offen. Für viele Sportar-

ten gibt es Schnupperkurse oder Privatunterricht

und für alle: optimale Trainingsbedingungen.

Spitzensportler aus aller Welt entscheiden sich für das Enga-

din. Was den Besten dient, steht hier aber auch dem sport-

lichen Freizeitvergnügen zur Verfügung. St. Moritz liegt auf

1800 Metern über Meer. Wer in der Höhe ankommt, soll sei-

nem Körper erst einmal etwas Zeit lassen. In den ersten zwei

bis drei Tagen muss er sich an die dünnere, trockenere Luft

anpassen. Zu Beginn wird geraten, sich nicht zu überfordern,

sondern sich immer «im grünen Bereich» zu bewegen. Ab

dem vierten Tag darf es intensiver werden. Und gegen Ende

einer Trainingswoche ist man bereit, auch an seine Grenzen zu

gehen. Und dabei das Wichtigste nicht vergessen: Geniessen!

for. There are taster courses or private lessons

in many sports, and the best possible training

conditions for all of them.

Top athletes from all over the world come to the Engadine, but

the region also provides the perfect conditions for leisure ac-

tivities at all levels. St. Moritz is at an altitude of 1,800 metres

above sea level. Time should always be taken to acclimatise the

body to higher altitudes, as it takes two or three days to adapt

to the thinner, drier air. In the beginning it is advisable not to

overexert yourself, but to move within the «green zone». You

can move on to more intensive exercise from the fourth day,

and towards the end of a week’s training you will be ready to

extend your limits. But don’t forget the most important thing:

enjoy yourself!

WinterwunderlandEs gibt fast nichts Schöneres: An einem

sonnigen, kalten Wintertag in St. Moritz erwachen

und dann hinaus in den Schnee – zu Fuss, mit

dem Schlitten oder auf Ski. Und danach herrlich

entspannen.

Alle sind warm eingepackt und gut ausgerüstet, und dann

kann es losgehen, das Schneeabenteuer im Winterwunderland

Engadin. Die Kleinen trollen im Pulverschnee, die Grossen

nehmen sich die schönsten Hänge vor, ziehen rhythmisch ihre

Bahnen auf den unzähligen kilometerlangen Loipen oder sie

entdecken – etwa in der Gegend um den Bernina-Pass oder im

Val Vex – unberührte Hänge auf Schneeschuhen. Wer einmal

etwas anderes ausprobieren will, kann es mit Eisstockschiessen

oder Curling versuchen, einen Besuch auf der Bobbahn ein-

planen oder im Februar die Pferde und ihre Reiter beim Polo

oder Skijöring auf dem gefrorenen St. Moritzer See bestaunen.

Soviel ist klar: Alle vergnügen sich draussen, bei strahlendem

Sonnenschein im weltberühmten «Champagnerklima», wie

die kalte, trockene Luft im Engadin auch genannt wird. Herr-

lich! Dazwischen gibt es eine heisse Gerstensuppe im Berg-

restaurant. Und danach heisst es: Zurück in die Wärme. Die

Familie beginnt vielleicht mit einer Tasse dampfend heisser

Schokolade oder stärkt sich erstmal mit Kaffee und Kuchen.

Danach werden die einen wohl ein kurzes Nickerchen vorzie-

hen und die anderen Richtung Wellness streben: Schwimmen,

Massage, Sauna oder Beautytreatments tun Körper und Seele

gut. Es ist Zeit zum Ausatmen.

Winter wonderlandNothing could be more beautiful than waking up

on a crisp and cold sunny winter’s day in

St. Moritz before heading out into the snow – on

foot, with a sled or on skis. Beautifully relaxing!

All togged up in warm clothes and with the right equipment,

you’re ready to set off on a snowy adventure in the Engadine’s

winter wonderland. Children can play about in the powder

snow, while adults and older kids can ski the beautiful slopes,

set a rhythmic pace along one of the innumerable kilometres

of cross-country pistes or explore unspoilt slopes on snow-

shoes in the vicinity of the famous Bernina Pass or in Val Vex.

If you want to try something different you can try your hand

at ice stock sport or curling, take in a trip to the bobsleigh run

or, in February, admire the skills of horse and rider in polo

tournaments and skijoring races on the frozen Lake St. Moritz.

One thing is clear – everyone can have a good time outdoors,

beneath the bright sunshine in the world-famous «champagne

climate», as the cold, dry air in the Engadine is known. Won-

derful! Stop off along the way for a bowl of hot barley soup

in a mountain restaurant. And then, back in to the warmth.

Begin with a family chat over a steaming mug of hot choco-

late or fortify yourself with coffee and cakes. Afterwards some

may take the opportunity for a nap while others prefer to head

for the wellness suite – swimming, massage, sauna and beauty

treatments work wonders for body and soul. Time to unwind.

With over 350 km of ski pistes and 200 km of cross-country

pistes, St. Moritz is the most extensive winter sports destina-

tion in Switzerland. And it was the first, established as it was

over 150 years ago. This winter season, the Kempinski Grand

Hotel des Bains is offering its guests free ski passes. The offer

includes a free ski pass for the duration of your stay, an excel-

lent buffet breakfast, free entry to Kempinski The Spa, service

and VAT. Tourist tax not included. It can be booked for stays

from 4 December 2015 to 27 March 2016 inclusive, for a mini-

mum stay of three nights, and is valid for adults and children,

for the duration of their stay.

The 2016 programme promises a number of highlights: the

Polo World Cup on Snow, the White Turf horse races, the

Freestyle Skiing World Cup, the 48th Engadine Ski Mara-

thon and the finals of the 2015/16 season Ski World Cup. In

2017 the Alpine Ski World Championships will be held in

St. Moritz, and the Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains will be

the official hotel for the Switzerland national team.

Der Duft des

Engadins

The scent of the

EngadineWie riecht ein kalter Wintertag? Und wie riecht St. Moritz?

Nun, der Duft von St. Moritz heisst «Inviern» und riecht nach

Enzian, Wacholder und Arvenholz, der Duft des Engadins

heisst «Engiadina» und riecht nach Arvenholz, Enzian und

Bergluft. Die Düfte sind eine Kreation des Berliner Starpar-

fumeur Geza Schön im Auftrag der St. Moritzer Unterneh-

merin Eveline Fasser Testa (Porträt auf der folgenden Seite).

Die Idee kam ihr vor zweieinhalb Jahren auf Reisen. «Düfte

haben mich schon immer fasziniert. Auf Elba fand ich einen

Duft namens acqua dell‘elba. Und ich dachte: Genial, das ist ja

fantastisch. Warum haben wir das in St. Moritz nicht?» Dann

machte sie sich an die Arbeit. Der erste Duft «Inviern» wur-

de 2014 lanciert, zum 150 Jahre Wintertourismus-Jubiläum.

Produziert wird er von Könnern in Norditalien. Die Produk-

telinie wird stetig weiterentwickelt. Damit Gäste einen Hauch

von Engadin mit nachhause nehmen können.

What is the smell of a cold winter’s day? And of St. Moritz?

Well, the scent of St. Moritz is called «Inviern» and smells

of gentian, juniper and Swiss pine, while the scent of the En-

gadine is called «Engiadina» and smells of Swiss pine, gen-

tian and mountain air. These scents have been created by top

Berlin perfumer Geza Schön for St. Moritz businesswoman

Eveline Fasser Testa (portrait on the next page). The idea

came to her when she was travelling two-and-a-half years ago.

«I’ve always been fascinated by scents. On Elba I discovered a

scent called ‹Acqua dell’Elba›, and I thought, that’s fantastic!

Why don’t we have something like that in St. Moritz?» And

so she got to work. The first scent, «Inviern», was produced

by experts in northern Italy and launched in 2014 to mark the

150-year anniversary of winter tourism. The product line is

constantly being expanded to enable guests to take a breath of

Engadine air home with them.

pan – is the focus in 2016, when eight top Japanese chefs will be

the guests of the best Engadine chefs. In the Kempinski Grand

Hotel des Bains, the new Executive Chef Mathias Schmidberger

will play host to his colleague Tohru Nakamura, who has cooked

his way to a Michelin star and 17 Gault Millau points at the

Geisels Werneckhof restaurant in Munich, and who has been

named «Chef of the Year 2015» by the German gourmet maga-

zine «Feinschmecker».

Die Strategie des VergnügensA strategy for enjoyment

Zuerst war der Wintertourismus, und der Wintertourismus

war eigentlich zuerst ein Gesundheitstourismus: Vor über 150

Jahren kamen die ersten Gäste wegen der guten Luft ins En-

gadin, um ihre Tuberkulose zu heilen, die damals eine Volks-

krankheit war. Vor allem Engländer und Deutsche wurden

in die trockene Winterluft und an die Sonne geschickt. Bald

einmal kam die Frage auf: Und wie vertreiben wir uns eigent-

lich die Zeit? Die englischen Gäste mit ihrem Flair für Spiel

und Sport waren dafür die Auslöser und die Treiber. Sie waren

begeistert vom Klima, und bald waren die anderen Gäste be-

geistert von den Möglichkeiten, die ihnen das Engadin bot.

Heute spricht man längst nicht mehr von Gesundheitstouris-

mus, sondern von Wellness oder Wellbeing. Aber der Sport

hat in jeglichen Konzepten zu Gesundheit und Wohlbefinden

seinen Platz nicht nur gefunden, sondern stetig gestärkt. Was

das Engadin betrifft, ist seine Attraktivität im Sommer ebenso

gross wie im Winter. Und durch seine einmalige Landschaft

und Lage kann es Jung und Alt sportlich ebenso beglücken

oder herausfordern wie den Spaziergänger und den Spitzen-

sportler. Es wird wenig Orte, Regionen und Destinationen ge-

First there was winter tourism, and winter tourism itself grew

out of health tourism – the first guests came to the Engadine

over 150 years ago because of the quality of the air, to cure

tuberculosis, which was a widespread disease at the time. It was

mostly English and German patients who were sent to enjoy

the benefits of the dry winter air and sun. Soon the question

arose: how should we spend our time? With their flair for sport

and games, the English triggered the developments and drove

them forward. They were delighted by the climate and soon

the other guests were delighted with the facilities offered to

them in the Engadine.

Nowadays we no longer talk about health tourism, but well-

ness or wellbeing. Sport has not only found its place as part of

the health and wellbeing-related concepts, but has constantly

strengthened its position, ensuring that the Engadine is as at-

tractive in summer as it is in winter. Its unique landscape and

location means it can offer enjoyment and challenge to young

and old, casual walkers and top athletes. There are few resorts,

regions and destinations where so many different sporting ac-

tivities can be found in such a small area – all of them against a

breathtaking backdrop of spectacular mountain scenery.

The landscape is not only an accompaniment to your favourite

pastimes – the Engadine is also a perfect place for training,

WINTER EXHIBITION

DECEMBER 2015 – APRIL 2016

From December 12, 2015 to April 16, 2016, Galerie Andrea Caratsch is showing at its St. Moritz

premises a new body of work by Luca Pancrazzi titled «Occidente Esotico». The subject of his new

paintings done in the last year and a half are the Engadin mountains and landscapes.

Luca Pancrazzi is foremost an observer. He distills his impres-

sions in restrained yet complex paintings, built up through

innumerable tones of white. Through this process, he uncov-

ers the most subtle gradations of light and shadow, and, in so

doing, invites viewers to reconnect with the seductive act of

looking. In Pancrazzi’s most recent series of paintings, the

artist turns his inward gaze to the vast Engadin Mountains, a

new subject matter which nevertheless seems to be a complete

synthesis of his singular painting technique and contemplative

manner.

Images of mountains are highly speculative ones, evoking a

primal sense of fantasy and the unknown. Across depictions

in literature and art, mountains inspire sensations of fascina-

tion and extreme beauty, yet they also fill us with terror as we

consider their harsh conditions and dangerous terrain. They

are home to the gods and wild creatures, the spiritual retreat

of hermits and the mysterious peaks scaled only by the most

adventurous mountaineers. From any point of view, mountains

instill a sense of deep isolation; from the valley looking up, the

mountain represents an expanse that can never be fully com-

prehended, while from the summit looking down, we experi-

ence a unique distancing of the self, allowing us to view the

world we inhabit as a large system of which we are only tiny

parts.

Speaking of the Engadin valley, Nietzsche, who was inspired

to write Thus Spoke Zarathustra while living in this allegorical

landscape, said he saw within the complexity of the light there

«the cradle of all silver tones» – a remark that also reflects the

experience of Pancrazzi’s canvases. The compositions focus the

eye on various fragments of the Engadin valley – rock forma-

tions, clusters of lakes, remote villages – in a layered language

that emphasizes the morpho logy of masses and shadows. The

large scale of the paintings enables a coexis tence of realism and

abstraction; the images remain coherent from a distance but

reveal, upon closer examination, a distinctive semi-pointillist

texture of brushstrokes. The white paintings are suffused with

brightness, they seem to flicker in and out of focus and the

landscape appears almost as a mirage. In one of the composi-

tions, a band of mist sweeps through the middle of the canvas.

This reminds us of the looming threat always present in these

areas, where obfuscating elements – such as fog, steam, bright

light and haze – envelop the peaks and ridges and disorient the

sense of place completely.

This sense of mystery, of perceiving the unseen, is para-

mount to Pancrazzi’s work. Much of the raw allure present

in mountainous landscapes has inevitably dissipated with the

easy access of satellite imagery. The notions of exploration

and surrender so intertwined with the experience of remote

landscapes are casually displaced by the proliferation of im-

ages, and the ease of merely dropping a pin to find oneself

in the midst of these far-away settings. In opposition to this,

Pancrazzi proposes we slow down and look for the subtle shifts

in color light, and texture. In a context where few things re-

main foreign or truly mysterious, Pancrazzi proposes that the

only way to return to a sense of wonder is to destabilize our

position as viewers by the practice of close, transformative

looking.
