El muñeco de nieve de Paco by Lisa Torres

Build BackgroundRead the title to children and point out the snowman in the cover illustration. Encourage children to use their knowledge of school and art to think about the story. Anticipate the text with questions such as these: ¿Les gustan los proyectos de arte? ¿Es fácil para ustedes usar tijeras? ¿Qué hacen si se equivocan en un dibujo?

Introduce the TextGuide children through the text, noting important ideas and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary so they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions:

Page 2: Explain that in this story, Paco has a problem he has to solve.

Pages 6–7: Remind children that they can use information in the pictures to help them read. Point out Paco’s snowman and his expression in both pictures. En la página 7 dice: Paco tomó el papel, se lo devolvió a ella y cruzó sus brazos. Actúen la forma en que Paco haría eso. ¿Cómo creen que se sentía con su muñeco de nieve? ¿Por qué creen que se siente así?

Ahora, vuelvan al comienzo para descubrir sobre el muñeco de nieve de Paco.

ReadAs the children read, observe them carefully. Guide them as needed, using language that supports their problem solving ability.

Respond to the TextPersonal ResponseAsk children to share their personal responses to the story. Begin by asking what they liked best about the story, or what they found most interesting.Suggested language: ¿Cómo creen que se sintió Paco al fi nal del cuento?

Ways of ThinkingAs you discuss the text, help children understand these teaching points:

Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text

• Paco’s class is making pictures of snowmen out of paper.

• Paco has trouble with scissors, so his snowman is covered with scraps of ripped paper.

• His teacher helps Paco realize that just because his snowman is different and even though he has trouble with scissors, he can still make good art.

• Mistakes can be turned into positive experiences.

• Your work may not look like everyone else’s, but it can be satisfying.

• Sometimes a shift in perspective can make a world of difference.

• The author uses details to show how children make different snowmen.

• Paco’s feelings are refl ected in the illustrations.

Choices for SupportFluencyInvite children to choose a passage from the text to read aloud. Remind them to use rising and falling tones related to meaning and punctuation.

Phonemic Awareness and Word WorkProvide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities:• Clapping Syllables Have children hear and say syllables in words from the book:

encima, oso polar, muñeco, nieve, círculo, idea, sorpresa, maestra, devolvió. Have them clap on each syllable: en-ci-ma, o-so po-lar, mu-ñe-co, nie-ve, cír-cu-lo, i-de-a, sor-pre-sa, ma-es-tra, de-vol-vió.

• Listening Game Have children listen for words that begin with the same sound. Have children raise their hands if the words begin with the same sound, and keep their hands in their laps if the beginning letter is different. Say pairs of words from the story, including: Paco/papel; tijeras/trababan; trababan/trató; acercó/tomó; líneas/las; pegó/panza; zanahoria/cortó; nariz/curvas.

Writing About ReadingCritical ThinkingRead the directions for children on Hoja reproducible 26.7 and guide them in answering the questions.

RespondingRead aloud the questions at the back of the book and help children complete the activities.

Target Comprehension SkillCompare and Contrast

Target Comprehension Skill Remind children that when they compare and

contrast they tell how two things are alike or not. Model how to compare and contrast:

Think Aloud

Comparemos y contrastemos los dibujos de Paco con los de sus compañeros. Todos están hechos de papel. Todos tienen muñecos de nieve muy coloridos. Pero algunas cosas son distintas. Los compañeros de Paco cortaban círculos perfectos. Cortaban líneas derechas o curvas. Las tijeras de Paco rajaban el papel. El muñeco de Paco era diferente a todos los otros muñecos de nieve.

Practice the SkillHave children choose another story and compare and contrast the actions of two characters in that story.

Writing PromptRead aloud the following prompt. Have children write their response, using the writing prompt on page 6.

In this story, Paco makes an important discovery about art projects. What do you think he learned? How do you think he will feel about doing the next art project? Use details from the story in your answer.
