    Lesson 13

All about seahorses!Seahorses are fish. They are truly unique, andnot just because of their unusualequine shape. Unlike most other fish, theyare monogamous andmate for life. Theyare the only animal species on Earth inwhich the male bears the unborn young.Found in tropical andtemperate waters, these upright-swimming can range in sizefrom 0.6 inches (1.5 centimeters) to 14inches (35 centimeters) long. His averagelifespan in the wild is 1 to 5 years(estimated)

Male seahorses are equipped with a small bag on their ventral, orfront-facing, side. When mating, the female deposits her eggs into hissmall bag, andthe male fertilizes them internally. He carries the eggsuntil they are fully formed into miniature seahorses.

Because of their body shape, seahorses are not good swimmers andcan easily die of fatigue when caught in storm-roiled seas buttheypush themselves by using a small fin on their back that moves up to35 times per second andthey also have smaller pectoral fins locatednear the back of the head that are used for finding direction.

Seahorses have no teeth andno stomach, butfood passes throughtheir digestive systems so quickly, andthey must eat constantly to

stay alive. They anchor themselves with their tails to sea grasses andcorals, butby using their big nose to suck in plankton orsmallcrustaceans that are around. They can consume 3,000 ormoreshrimps per day.

    California CondorGymnogyps californianus: Vulture Culture

Look, up in the sky! (We mean WAY up, as in 15,000 feet!)It's a bird, all rightthe mighty California condor! And with all duerespect to that tall dude with yellow feathers on Sesame Street, thishigh flyer holds the title of the largest bird in North America. Weighingup to 25 pounds, he's got a wingspan of 9 1/2 feet and can glide forhours at 55 mph without once beating his wings. If that sounds hard,well...it is. It takes a year for young condors to sharpen their soaringskills. The California condor is a vulture, a type of bird recognizableby his big size and bald head. And like his vulture cousins, theCalifornia condor chows down on carrion. That's the meat of deadanimals, such as cattle, sheep, deer and horses. It may sound grossto you, but just thinkhe's part of nature's clean-up crew. Andbesides, he always washes up after dinner by rubbing his head andneck against grass, rocks and trees. No rinsingneeded!http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=kids_abcs_californiacondor

    Elephant: Nose-Y NeighborLoxodonta africana

Imagine if you had a machine that could prepare all your meals, give you a shower, carry your backpack and provide soundeffects for a variety of social occasions. You may not be able tofind one in stores, but the African elephant is lucky enough tocarry one with him at all times. If you havent already guessed it,were talking of the trunkand this big guy is really kind ofattached to his! The African elephants trunk is actually anextension of his upper lip and nose, and he uses it for drinking,

greeting friends, trumpeting, lifting and grasping. And like anyself-respecting nose, this ones good for smelling, too. But mostimportantly, the elephant uses his trunk to gather and bring foodto his mouth. And we dont mean a berry here and a blade ofgrass there. To keep his 13,000-pound self strong and healthy,an African elephant needs to consume more than 300 pounds ofgrass, shrubs, leaves and fruit a day. Pass the salad, please!

    PandaAiluropoda melanoleuca: BamBOO!

Forget about getting a quick bite to eat! China's giantpanda devotes 12 hours of every day to eating! To getall the nutrition he needs, he has to consume about 15percent of his bodyweight daily. That comes out tobetween 28 and 36 pounds of bamboo, his meal ofchoice. Luckily, he has special chewing muscles andbroad, flat teeth for all that bamboo chomping.

He's got special markings, too. We may think pandasare totally cute, but their black eyes and big, blackcircles on their faces may look like 2 pairs of giant, glaring, staring eyes to animals who try to invade theirterritory.

For more information, and to see what a real livepanda is doing right now, at the San Diego Zoo.
