    Snake Rustlers

1 Carol, Ive been called out on a job. Would you like

to ride along? called Uncle Eric from the kitchen. She

eagerly bounced off her bed and grabbed her shoes.

2 Ive been ready forever, replied Carol. For as long as

she could remember, she had wanted to accompany her

uncle on one of his rattlesnake rustling trips. She thought

it had to be one of the most fascinating and exciting jobs

in the world. How amazing it must be to track down

rattlesnakes that are slithering around inside buildings

where they are not wanted! Fearless Uncle Eric had

rescued reptiles from dentists offices, fast food

restaurants, school libraries, and even movie theaters.

3 In the truck, Carol began assaulting her uncle with

endless questions. How do you know if a rattlesnake is

going to strike? Where do they like to hide? Do you grab

them with your hands? Once you get one, where do you

put it? You dont hurt it, do you? How long do they

    grow?

4 Uncle Eric just looked at his niece, waiting for her to

run out of breath. As he was a relatively quiet man, her

nonstop chatter was overwhelming. Taking a deep breath,

he slowly replied, The snakes make a rattling noise when

they are under decks, woodpiles, and staircases. I always

use a set of tongs because you never, ever want to risk

touching them with your hands. I then take them home

and release them safely. The longest one Ive ever caught

    was just under six feet.

5 Out of breath, Uncle Eric inhaled and then looked overat Carol, immediately noticing that her face looked pale,

her eyes were wide, and she appeared to be trembling with

    fear.

6 Change your mind? he asked with a small smile.

Carol nodded and slipped out of the truck.

00 Roger is writing a paper for his English class about the updated film version ofShakespearesRomeo and Juliet. Which supporting statement should be removed in

order to keep the essay focused?

Although this updated version is certain to appeal to the generation raised

from infancy on MTV, it leaves literature fans like myself rather cold. Thetheme and the spoken words may be the same ones that Shakespeare

wrote, but that is where the similarity ends. The modernized setting makes

everything seem out of place and leaves the viewer feeling like he is in a

time warp. Perhaps the most obvious mistake is that Olivia Hussey is much

    more attractive than Claire Danes.
