escuela nos propusimos cumplir en septiembre

En primer lugar permiacutetanme compartirles que este es el

iexclquinto antildeo consecutivo en que Nuestro Mundo tiene el

mayor iacutendice de asistencia en la ciudad de Madison Un

promedio de 9545 de los estudiantes estuvieron

presentes en cualquier diacutea de este ciclo escolar

Box Tops Acadeacutemicamente cumplimos casi todas nuestras metas y seguimos viendo algunos

de los crecimientos maacutes raacutepidos de la ciudad en las medidas de lectura en espantildeol e

ingleacutes Maacutes del 79 de nuestros estudiantes en Kindergarten 1ero y 2ndo grado lograron el punto

de referencia para la lectura en espantildeol (nuestra meta fue 75) En los grados 3ero 4to y 5to maacutes del 41 de los estudiantes alcanzaron el dominio de la lectura en ingleacutes soacutelo un punto

porcentual por debajo del promedio del distrito Sin embargo al mirar el nuacutemero de estudiantes

que alcanzaron sus metas de crecimiento usted ve cuaacutento han logrado estos estudiantes este

antildeo iexclEl 71 de los estudiantes alcanzaron sus objetivos de crecimiento este antildeo iexclEstas cifras

de crecimiento estaacuten dentro de las maacutes alta de la ciudad

Este increiacuteble crecimiento acadeacutemico se vuelve auacuten maacutes inspirador cuando se considera la

coaccioacuten que estos nintildeos han estado viviendo debido a un ambiente poliacutetico que es abiertamente

opresivo y discriminatorio hacia las minoriacuteas y las poblaciones de inmigrantes La fortaleza y la

resistencia de nuestros estudiantes y maestros son verdaderamente inspiradoras

Queacute emocionante mes de mayo para el equipo verde Recibimos el premio de la

Asociacioacuten de Jardineros Maestros del Aacuterea MAMGA por sus siglas en ingleacutes

por segundo antildeo consecutivo Con esta subvencioacuten compramos una variedad de

herramientas de jardineriacutea para que usen los estudiantes y maestros al igual

que semillas de raacutebano para jardineriacutea de verduras (cada saloacuten tiene un

recipiente en el que pueden plantar) y un tercer contenedor de compostaje ya

que los dos que tenemos por lo general estaacuten casi llenos (muy bien por los

estudiantes que estaacuten haciendo compostaje de su comida en la cafeteriacutea) iexclHa

sido divertido ver raacutebanos ya apareciendo en nuestro nuevo jardiacuten de afuera al

lado de la puerta de la cafeteriacutea

La Federacioacuten Nacional de Vida Silvestre y la campantildea lsquoSubaru loves the earthrsquo

tambieacuten eligieron a la Escuela Nuestro Mundo como uno de sus galardonados

Recibimos dos casas de paacutejaros un bantildeo de paacutejaros una casa para sapos

alimentador de aves alimentador de colibriacute suelo algunas herramientas de

jardiacuten una regadera 18 plantas nativas y $100

What an exciting May for the Green Team We were awarded the Master

Area Master Gardenerrsquos Association (MAMGA) grant for the second year

in a row With this grant we purchased a variety of gardening tools for

students and teachers to use radish seeds for vegetable container garden-

ing (each classroom has a container they can plant in) and a third com-

post bin since the two we have are usually near capacity (way to go stu-

dents on composting your cafeteria food scraps) Itrsquos been fun to see rad-

ishes already popping up in our new container garden outside the cafete-

ria doors

National Wildlife Federation and the Subaru loves the earth campaign also

chose Nuestro Mundo Community School as one of their award recipients

We received two bird houses a bird bath a toad house bird feeder

hummingbird feeder soil a few garden tools a watering can 18 native

plants and $100 gift card to use on garden needs We installed most of

these items in our rain garden during our garden work day and it looks

great We are so thankful to all the volun-

teers that came out and once again weeded

and mulched to make the outdoor areas look so great Please take a

moment to stop by and check it outhellipbirds are already creating nests in the bird houses and eating lots of bird seed Our outdoor space will

now be able to receive the Wildlife Habitat certification from the Na-

tional Wildlife Federation

A special thanks to Elizabeth Kuisis for teaching the kids more about

composting at school assemblies in May This was a great opportunity for students who have been

composting in the lunch room to review what goes in compost in recycling or in landfill containers

Finally donrsquot forget about this free opportunity this summer

Visitor Center Latino Earth Partnership is an initiative to engage educators in ecological

restoration and water stewardship rooted in Latino cultural knowledge and community

resource specialists scientists and professors Spanish and non-Spanish speakers of all

able to meet our goal and raised $15000-nearly doubling what was raised in previous years With these funds we

The first annual Nuestro Mundo Puma

Pounce and Bounce held on Saturday

May 27 was a wonderful success The

community-building event brought

together the school neighborhood and

supporters of SpanishEnglish dual Artwork Credit disneyclipscom language immersion together in a

festive atmosphere In addition it was a

successful fundraiser garnering nearly $4500 for

Nuestro Mundo Community School These funds will

help provide field trips books and enrichment activi-

ties for our students at Nuestro Mundo Community

School

Hey family one great way to en-

courage your childrsquos reading is for himher to own a library card their

very OWN library card

Then make it a commitment to go

to the library at least once a week to

check out books to read at home

A book or two is okay for an

adult or big sisterbrother to read to

your young reader But try to encour-

age your child to choose books that he

or she can read most of the words and

the book seems interesting to himher

Besides read books libraries

have AWESOME summer reading pro-

grams that kids can earn cool prizes

one that brings in critters to hear about

and touch game nights and so much

Keep Math Skills Sharp

Practice math with either flash

cards or math games on the computer

You can even help your family figure

out their grocery bill by using estima-

tion Tell them about how much all

their items will cost See how close you

can get Estimate the weight of fruits

back in September First let me share that for

the 5th year in a row Nuestro Mundo has the

highest attendance rate in the city of Madison

An average of 9545 students were present on

any given day this school year

Academically we met nearly all of our goals and

continue to see some of the most rapid growth in the city on Spanish and

English reading measures Over 79 of our students in Kindergarten 1st

and 2nd grades met the benchmark for Spanish reading (our goal was 75) In 3rd 4th and

5th grades over 41 of students achieved proficiency in English reading--just one percentage

point under the district average When you look at the number of students reaching their

growth targets however you see how much these students have accomplished this year 71

of students met their growth targets this year These growth numbers are among the highest

in the city

This incredible academic growth becomes even more inspiring when you consider the duress

these kids have been living under due to a political environment that is openly oppressive

and discriminatory toward minority and immigrant populations The strength and resilience

of our students and teachers is truly inspiring

I thank you the families for coming together to support each other this year You have

given life to the spirit and potential of what we have always believed Nuestro Mundo to be

A place where all are welcome all are safe and all are loved
