Blackboard. Be prepared to apply your knowledge in class.
7. Access the Bloomberg website using the following link http://bloomberg.com and locate
the stock market charts at the top of the screen. Alternatively, choose to display the DJIA,
S&P 500, NASDAQ, and the Russell 2000. Set the time frame to five years and click on
“Get Chart”. Based on the chart, answer the following questions:
a. Which index has been the most volatile over the last five years?
b. Which index has posted the greatest gains over the last five years?
c. Adjust the time frame to intraday.
i. Which index has performed the best today?
d. Which has been most volatile?
FINA 650-O FINANCIAL MARKET, CURRENCY, AND BANKING 50
Upload your answers to the assignment area in Blackboard and bring a copy of the chart to
the workshop for a group activity.
8. Continue to collaborate with the members of your group to finalize the written and oral
components of the final project. Be sure to refer and review the instructions provided by the
facilitator during Workshop One and familiarize yourself with the evaluation criteria of the
project.
E. Application Activities during the Workshop
1. Students will work in partners to share and discuss their examples of each of the following
debt security markets: money market, bond market, and mortgage market. Afterward,
students will reach a consensus and choose three examples (one of each type of market) to
analyze the risk and place them in order of riskier to safer. Based on the risk order,
students will explain to the rest of the class which market they consider would be a better
investment and justify why. This activity forms part of the evaluation (See Appendix E
Oral Communication Skills Rubric).
2. Divided in subgroups and based on the stock market charts prepared as an activity before
the workshop, students will analyze said charts and proceed to complete the following
tasks:
a. Determine the peak and the lowest point.
b. Identify at least one reason or factor in the economy that triggered the change or
fluctuation.
c. Choose one index and project a possible change in the stock in the upcoming
year.
FINA 650-O FINANCIAL MARKET, CURRENCY, AND BANKING 51
d. Assume the facilitator is an investor seeking advice on which current stock to
invest in. Convince him or her to invest in at least one while providing relevant
and persuasive reasons.
Each group will present their answers and conclusions to the rest of the class. The
facilitator will promote active participation, as well as critical and analytical thinking
during this discussion. The audience will ask related and relevant questions, and seek
clarification when needed. This activity forms part of the evaluation (See Appendix E Oral
Communication Skills Rubric).
3. The facilitator will divide the class into groups to discuss the assigned readings about the
Social Security Trust Fund and the use and benefits of insurance companies and pension
funds. Based on the assigned readings and the students’ valuable notes, about the Social
Security Trust Fund and the use and benefits of insurance companies and pension funds,
each team will assume a position about where the main source of funds are coming from
and why these funds are not expected to last. Students will defend their positions,
following the rules* of debate (*the facilitator can adapt the rules accordingly):
a. The facilitator will divide students in two teams with equal number of members
and preferably according to their beliefs. It will be interesting to see how they
transform their true opinions to assume a position that is not what they really
believe in.
i. If the number of students is odd, then the student who has no group can
be designated as a debate moderator. If the number of students is even,
the facilitator will be the moderator.
The moderator will control the time (with a stopwatch), the
debate turns and will clarify the rules* of the debate, which will
be decided by the facilitator.
FINA 650-O FINANCIAL MARKET, CURRENCY, AND BANKING 52
The moderator will open and close the debate demonstrating a
neutral position.
The moderator will conclude the debate, analyzing the positions
expressed by his colleagues, without sharing his/hers.
b. Both groups will be divided to establish their respective argumentation strategies
and approaches. In addition, they will anticipate the possible scenarios that could
arise from the discussion (the arguments of the opposing group). Once the
organization time is up, the moderator will initiate the debate explaining the rules*
of engagement and officially opening the argumentative exercise.
c. At the end of the debate, the facilitator will be a mediator that will interact with the
debate moderator (in case it is performed by a student) to ask his/her point of view
toward the debate content and what he/she thinks of his/her experience as a debate
moderator.
d. Students will practice voice management criteria: clarity and projection; emphasis,
strength and volume; control of speed and pauses; rhythm and intonation.
i. The facilitator will be aware of the use of oral language by paying
attention to students' vocabulary, pronunciation, tone, conjugation, tense,
the use of colloquial or formal language and other aspects of oral
communication.
ii. The facilitator will also evaluate if students demonstrated posture and
control of non-verbal gestures during the discussion (This is done to
improve your professional poise and make sure you get used to express
yourself successfully and correctly).
iii. This activity forms part of the evaluation (See Appendix E Oral
Communication Skills Rubric). The facilitator will pay attention to the
FINA 650-O FINANCIAL MARKET, CURRENCY, AND BANKING 53
correct use of the core course terminology, pronunciation skills, tone,
subject verb agreement, body language, and the mastery of the effective
oral communication skills.
e. Finally, as a closing, the facilitator will open a written discussion forum where
students will evaluate their performances and experiences during the debate.
During the week they will be able to react and exchange ideas on the way they
handled the topics, the language, the opinions, the control and the atmosphere that
permeated the activity.
4. Using the four types of derivatives (future, forwards, options, and swaps) and based on
their notes about what hedgers, speculators, margin traders, and arbitrageurs do and how
they differentiate, students will work in pairs to prepare a comparative table of the
differences of trading derivatives vs. common stock. Students will present their table to the
rest of the class.
5. In a round table discussion format and guided by the facilitator, students will explain the
key characteristics and functions of the main financial markets, including their impact on
the current economy. The facilitator will encourage in-depth analysis of the topic and will
provide immediate feedback. This activity forms part of the evaluation (See Appendix F
Participation Rubric).
6. Individually, students will compose a two-paragraph self-reflection on how understanding
the main financial markets help their day to day operations. The facilitator will evaluate
the language component of this activity (See Appendix B Paragraph Construction Rubric).
7. Finally, the facilitator will mention and clarify the activities to be completed for the next
workshop. In addition, he or she will review with students the activities and corresponding
rubrics that must be uploaded to the digital portfolio.
