N otice that Jesus is addressing the religious leaders in today’s Gospel, those who made a display of their
dedication to keeping God’s law. In response, Jesus presents a simple parable in which a father asks his two sons to work in his field. A spoken “No” from one becomes an enacted “Yes.” With the other, the opposite happens: “Yes” in word becomes “No” in deed. Jesus then asks, Which son did his father’s will? The answer condemns the leaders, because they have been rejecting Jesus’ outreach to sinners and thus hindering him from doing his Father’s will. Doing God’s will is what matters. Ezekiel is making the same point when he says that turning from wickedness brings life to a sinner. This conversion is doing God’s will. Saint Paul uses an early Christian hymn to call the Philippians to have the same mind that was in Christ, the obedient Son of God. Through his self-emptying, Jesus humbly served the Father’s will, becoming obedient even until death on a cross. As Saint Paul says elsewhere, Jesus was not “Yes and No” but in him it is always “Yes” (cf. Corinthians 1:19). What is God asking of you? N ote que Jesús está dirigiéndose a los líderes religiosos en el Evangelio de hoy, aquellos que hicieron una
demostración de su dedicación a guardar la ley de Dios. En respuesta, Jesús presenta una sencilla parábola en la que un padre pide a sus dos hijos que trabajen en su campo. Un “No” hablado de uno se convierte en un “Sí” promulgado. Con el otro, ocurre lo contrario: “Sí” en palabra se convierte en “No” en verdad. Entonces Jesús pregunta: ¿Qué hijo hizo la voluntad de su padre? La respuesta condena a los líderes, porque han estado rechazando el acercamiento de Jesús a los pecadores y así impidiéndole hacer la voluntad de su Padre. Hacer la voluntad de Dios es lo que importa. Ezequiel está haciendo el mismo punto cuando dice que el cambio de la maldad trae vida a un pecador. Esta conversión está haciendo la voluntad de Dios. San Pablo usa un himno cristiano temprano para llamar a los Filipenses a tener la misma mente que estaba en Cristo, el obediente Hijo de Dios. My Brothers in Christ,
Hurricanes, earthquakes, and storms throughout the world have been the topic of our discussions during this month of September. In Psalm 145, proclaimed on Sunday, September 24, we are again reminded, The Lord is near to all who call upon Him. Should we not turn to the Lord in the midst of our uncertainty?
During these weeks, our conversations have progressed from helping those suffering from the effects of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Jose, an earthquake in Mexico, to those in Puerto Rico affected by Hurricane Maria. Our call upon the Lord is great! Yet, in the midst of suffering, prayer is our first recourse.
I am grateful to you for offering the Collection for Storms 2017. While originally the Collection was announced for Hurricane Harvey, as additional storms have occurred, I know you agree with me that our financial offering should be shared among victims of the multiple storms endured. Because many of our family members are from Puerto Rico, please know there is great anxiety as they are worried about their homeland and their families and they will bring their worries to you. We will help them as best as possible when we have a better sense of specific needs. It is too soon to mobilize any type of food or clothing collection. We will work with our partner agencies to assist with needs as we receive them.
Within our own diocese, I am grateful to many of you and the staff of the Chancery and Catholic Charities of Central Florida who have worked tirelessly to meet the immediate needs of individuals impacted by Hurricane Irma. Emergency distribution centers were established in Lakeland, Winter Haven, Lady Lake, Daytona Beach, Cocoa, Cocoa Beach, Palm Bay, Orlando and Clermont. Additionally, food and water was also made available through Brother’s Keeper in Ocala and United Against Poverty in Orlando. These efforts could not have been successful without our partnerships with St. Vincent de Paul conferences, Knights of Columbus and the Council of Catholic Women to name a few. Through your own parishes and Catholic Charities of Central Florida, there will be opportunities emerging for volunteers, supplies to help families and individuals get re-established, and financial support to assist the long term recovery.
Let us pray to the Lord who is near to all who call upon Him: O Father, receive unto Your loving presence those who have lost their lives, comfort the grieving, and fortify the courage and resilience of those whose lives have been uprooted by these disasters. Amen.

Mis hermanos en Cristo,
Huracanes, terremotos y tormentas a través del mundo han sido el tópico de nuestras discusiones durante este mes de septiembre. En el Salmo 145, proclamado el domingo 24 de septiembre, se nos recuerda nuevamente, El Señor está cerca de los que lo invocan. ¿No deberíamos dirigirnos al Señor en medio de nuestra incertidumbre?
Durante estas semanas, nuestras conversaciones han progresado de ayudar a aquellos que están sufriendo por los efectos de los huracanes Harvey, Irma y José, un terremoto en México, a aquellos en Puerto Rico afectados por el huracán María. ¡Nuestro llamado al Señor es grande! Todavía, en medio del sufrimiento, la oración es nuestro primer recurso.
Les agradezco por ofrecer la Colecta para las Tormentas 2017. Mientras que originalmente la colecta fue anunciada para el huracán Harvey, como han ocurrido tormentas adicionales, sé que están de acuerdo conmigo que nuestra ofrenda financiera debe ser compartida entre las víctimas que han sufrido por las diferentes tormentas. Ya que muchos de los miembros de nuestra familia son de Puerto Rico, por favor sepan que hay gran ansiedad ya que están preocupados por su patria y sus familias y les traerán sus preocupaciones a ustedes. Los ayudaremos de la mejor manera posible cuando sepamos mejor acerca de sus necesidades específicas. Es muy pronto para movilizar cualquier tipo de colecta de alimentos o ropa. Trabajaremos con nuestras agencias asociadas para ayudar con las necesidades a medida que las vayamos recibiendo.

CHRISMCHRISM

Chrism is the most special of all the oils used for Catholic sacraments and rituals. Traditionally, it is olive oil enhanced with balsam, a perfume. Today, other oils and perfumes may be used, especially in regions where the traditional ingredients are difficult to obtain. No matter the formula, chrism should have a pleasing aroma. Chrism is the oil used for the three sacraments that may be received only once in a lifetime: baptism, confirmation, and ordination to the priesthood. It carries a strong association with the Holy Spirit, who consecrates the faithful for service according to the sacrament they receive. Only the bishop may consecrate chrism. If the parish supply begins to run low, the local priest may not create more. He must obtain it from the bishop. The bishop consecrates this oil only once a year that the chrism Mass, shortly before the paschal Triduum begins. This tradition began so that chrism could be fresh and abundantly available for the celebration of the sacraments of initiation at the Easter Vigil. After the chrism Mass, portions of the oils are distributed to parishes for their use throughout the year. Oils are typically stored in bottles bearing the year of consecration.

El Crisma es el más especial de todos los aceites usados para los sacramentos y rituales católicos. Tradicionalmente, es aceite de oliva mejorado con bálsamo, un perfume. Hoy en día, se pueden utilizar otros aceites y perfumes, especialmente en regiones donde los ingredientes tradicionales son difíciles de obtener. No importa la fórmula, el Crisma debe tener un aroma agradable. El Crisma es el aceite usado para los tres sacramentos que pueden ser recibidos sólo una vez en la vida: el bautismo, la confirmación, y la ordenación al sacerdocio. Lleva una fuerte asociación con el Espíritu Santo, que consagra a los fieles para el servicio de acuerdo con el sacramento que reciben. Sólo el obispo puede consagrar el Crisma. Si el suministro parroquial comienza a bajar, el sacerdote local no puede crear más. Él debe obtenerlo del obispo. El obispo consagra este aceite sólo una vez al año durante la Misa Crismal, poco antes de que empiece el Triduo pascual. Esta tradición comenzó para que el Crisma pudiera estar fresco y abundantemente disponible para la celebración de los sacramentos de iniciación en la Vigilia Pascual. Después de la Misa Crismal, las porciones de los aceites se distribuyen a las parroquias para su uso durante todo el año. Los aceites se almacenan típicamente en botellas que llevan el año de la consagración.
