In commemoration of the visit of the Magi to the home of the Holy Family, there arose the customs of blessing homes during the week of Epiphany.

The blessing includes marking the first initials of the legendary names of the Magi (Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar) at the top of the main door frame along with the year, plus crosses in between the numbers and letter. This year it would look like this:

20 + C + M + B + 18

The home of a Christian is a holy place – a place with Christian symbols, and a place where prayers are said.

The Church encourages the practice of lay people praying blessings – blessing food, children, their home. The bishops of the United States have published a book of “Catholic Household Blessings,” noting that if the Sunday assembly is to be a praying community, prayer has to happen in the “little churches” – households and families.

On this feast of the Epiphany, whether you live alone or with a family, pray a blessing on the place you call home.

Here’s an example: Be my shelter, Lord, when I am at home, my companion when I am away, and my welcome guest when I return. And at least receive me into the dwelling place you have prepared for me in your Father’s house, where you live forever and ever. Amen

* * * * * * * * * * In France, a popular Christmas tradition is to mark the days of the three king’s journey to the Christ Child, with a table of 13 desserts.

The number “13” represents the days it took the Magi to follow the Star to the newborn Jesus. The practice begins on Christmas Eve and continues until the traditional feast day of the Epiphany. The desserts follow a “big supper” that is held on Christmas Eve before midnight Mass.

¿Quién me enseña? ¿Quién me levanta cuando me caigo? ¿Quién me ayuda?

Volunteer Opportunities - The Sacristan Ministry

The Ministry of Sacristan is a time-honored ministry in the Catholic Church. The Sacristan provides an important and essential service to the community by doing all the things that are necessary for our liturgical celebrations. The Sacristan is required to prepare the worship space for its celebrations ranging from the cleaning of the Church and its furnishings to the cleaning of the vessels and linens used in the liturgies. The Ministry of Sacristan is a “behind the scenes” ministry.

At St. Lawrence Parish and Education Center the Ministry of Sacristan is divided into three different ministries:

SETUP SACRISTANS: Preparing the table before the Liturgy is the setup sacristan’s responsibility. Arriving at least 30 minutes before Mass to set out all the items needed for liturgy and then staying after liturgy to clean up and put everything away. Time commitment: One Sunday a month (one hour).

SANCTUARY ATTENDANTS: The Sanctuary Attendants clean the Church each Friday or Saturday by working in teams of two. They are responsible for making sure the worship space is clean and tidy for the weekend Masses. Currently there are 4 teams so the time commitment is once every four weeks. It takes two people one hour a week.

LAUNDERERS: The Launderers are responsible for the washing and ironing of the altar linens, towels and Altar Server albs used during Mass. Time commitment: Currently we have 12 launderers so the commitment is once every 12 weeks. Depending on the amount of linens (more during Easter & Christmas) it could take at least 2 hours.

At this time the greatest need are Sanctuary Attendants and Setup Sacristans.

Please prayerfully consider joining one of these essential ministries. Call Vickie Wallace at 408-296-3000
