vidualistic architecture o Her-zog & de Meuron.
Te impressive acade comprises 7,200individual cassettes, each with a di er-ent shape and size. In the entire construc-tion, no two cassettes are alike. Te sheetsare embossed with constantly changing pat-terns, based on digitally enhanced photos o trees in Golden Gate Park. Tis gives the acadea multi arious sur ace that is rich in nuances. Te
intention o the embossing and per oration is to givean impression o light ltering through treetops. Apart rom the rst, long-lasting impression o the cop-per cladding, the building itsel is a ascinating exampleo innovate architecture. Large, spacious bands o windowsneutralise the borders between the inner rooms and the rich, natural environment outside. Te museum has our invitingentrances that can be reached by walking along di erent pathsin the park. Tis is a museum that is transparent, open and invit-ing to all sides. Te main entrance consists o a nine metre wideopening, behind which a copper-covered passage leads to the central
atrium; a magni cent room where the Italian limestone oor seamlessly leads to the neighbouring galleries. A long ight o stair takes visitors tothe oor below and stretches over a 60 metre-long inner courtyard terracesurrounded by erns. approximately 44 metre-highrectangular tower, home to the
museums teaching and seminarrooms. Tere is also a viewing oor
that can be accessed by visitors, andthat provides a beauti ul view over the
entire bay area around San Francisco.
Visitors to the De Young Museum o ten canbe seen stroking the copper acade with their
hands. Tey want to eel the texture o the cop-per, examine the per orations with their ngers
and look closely to see how the patterns change. Tecopper acade is the strong point o the building and
it works both up close and at a distance. Te patinatedcopper makes the building blend into the colour scheme
o the surrounding landscape. Te light ltering throughthe many per orations resembles the light ltering through
the oliage in the park. Trough the amazing new technique, the museum has become a work o art in itsel .

Kazimierz DolnyTe multi-sur ace roo o the residential building built in Kaz-imierz Dolny has a very interesting but complicated structure.Te overall roo sur ace o 400 sq metres has been clad with5,700 pre abricated diamond-shaped copper tiles.
Tis method o roo cladding creates an airy but at the sametime solid look, which is a huge advantage when the roo con-sists o as many as 18 di erent sur aces and eyebrow windows.Te elements o the roo covering have been pre abricated rom
0.55 mm-thick copper sheet in the shape o 68 cm-wide copperstrip.
Te building is also equipped with a pre abricated gutter system, assembled by sections that are up to 6 metres in length. Tecomplex structure o the roo and the our eyebrow windowsrequired masterly skills and cra tsmanship o the roo ers. Tecomplicated roo assembly went on or two months. A ten-yearguarantee period is provided by the contractor.

Tis building makes a clear statement re-garding the pleasure o living with beau-ti ul design and architecture. Te shello the building consists o owing pre-patinated copper around the penthousepod with a slender prepatinated coppercentral acade anked on either side by cedar planking. Te interior design issimilarly uncompromised with state o the art kitchen and bathroom ttingsand the possibility to speci y networkedentertainment systems throughout theapartment.
Te design premise or the penthouse wasthat the standing seams should be verti-cal on both opposite sides o the pod andcontinuous across the roo . Tis provedto be problematical as the plan o thepenthouse is trapezium in shape, which would naturally result in the verticalseams kicking out, the very tight radiusor the curves would push the roo ngmaterial near to the limits o ormability without damage to the patina. However,a solution was engineered that made thedesign possible and it is reasonable to as-sume that the complexity will go largely unnoticed.

For many years, the copper house had white awnings. The aw nings made the aade varied and rich.

ventilated air pockets to lead away theheat. By placing the awnings in variouspositions, di erent patterns were createdin the aade. Te white awnings, withtheir harmonious and play ul rhythm, became like a musical score with vari-ations that stimulated the eye; an unex-
pected esthetical e ect that enriches theappreciation o the building. Te archi-tects had success ully brought togetherconstruction, materials and appearancein an unusual way. Te exciting aadecan be seen and enjoyed by the ap-proximately 85 000 people who pass thebuilding every day.
Ivar engbom, who was 82-years old atthe time, ollowed the project with great
interest and saw the new building as aper ect match to his old building.
Te bank building was inaugurated in1962. Te buildings architecture wasdescribed as one o the best o its time, and it was considered to be one o Stock-holms most interesting buildings. It waspopularly called the copper house onHornsgatan.
Th c pp h b c m thA ch t ct h A ter 15 years the bank went through areorganization. Te copper house wastaken over by the Swedish Associationo Communes. At rst, the old interior
with small individual ofces or bank personnel remained. Ten, open-planofces became popular, with large openareas where everyone could see, and beseen by, everyone else. Dividing walls were torn down and a large sea o oorspace emerged.
Tis was what the modern architect rm wanted; the copper house was per ect asarchitecture ofces, and at the same timeit represented the best o Swedish archi-tecture.
oday, our entire oors house architec-ture rms, one on each oor. Tey are
Hans Murman, Ahlqvist & Almqvist,Lindberg & Stenberg and Hederus-
Malmstrm-Widegren. I visited each o them to get their view on architectureand copper.Te copper house as a building or archi-tects has many advantages. It is easier orthe di erent ofces to cooperate whenthey are only a ew ights o stairs apart, and a world-encompassing knowledge isgathered under the same roo . At times, projects are too big to be handled by onerm alone, or two ofces may decide to
work together or a contest. Occasion-ally, both husband and wi e work asarchitects in the building, but on di er-ent oors. Te building, pro ession andindividual have become one, a kind o architect integration.

The sunlight lters through the o ce windows copper-greenawnings, ramed by the copper on the aade. As we talk,Hans Murman proudly shows me a small model. This is thewinning proposal or Sametinget in Kiruna. The proposal isvery unusual. The building is hal -moon-shaped and the con-vex aade in the back leans 45 o towards the sky and ends in
a pointed arch. The proposal has received much attention.A larger model is now shown at the International ArchitectTrienal in Venice.
What is your relation to copper? I ask. Hans Murman laughs. I come rom Dalarna and was practically born in the Falucopper mine. I have copper in my blood. I use copper in mybuildings whenever possible, as the material has so manygood characteristics. I wouldnt hesitate to design an entirebuilding clad in copper.
Hans Murman nds the architect qualitymore important than the quantity.
