READING I: Read the text and complete the chart.

The first dinosaurs appeared about 230 million years ago. They lived in the forests with a very dense vegetation and active volcanoes. The climate was warm and it rained a lot.

What did dinosaurs eat? Some dinosaurs ate meat like lizards, turtles or hunted other dinosaurs. There were other dinosaurs that ate plants and fruits. The meat-eaters were extremely dangerous and ferocious, for example the Tyrannosaurus Rex and the Compsognathus. The Compsognathus is one of the few dinosaurs for which the diet is well known: they ate mostly lizards. On the other hand, the plant-eaters -like the Apatosaurus - were rather inoffensive and quiet.

How big were dinosaurs? The largest complete dinosaur we know of was Brachiosaurus; it reached 23m in length and 12 m in height (about the length of two large buses). The Apatosaurus was about 22 meters long , it was a tremendously large long-necked animal with a long tail. It had a very tiny brain and small head. It weighed around 26.000 kg, it is the same as the weight of 4 elephants! The Tyrannosaurus Rex was about 12 meters long and weighed approximately 6000 kg. It had a short neck, an enormous head, large teeth and a long, heavy tail. The smallest dinosaur was just slightly larger than a chicken; it was the Compsognathus . It was 1 m long and probably weighed about 2.5 kg. The Compsognathus had long legs and a longer tail. The eyes were very large and the teeth were very small and sharp.

READING II. Read the text and answer the questions.

THE SOLAR SYSTEM: The Sun is one of the millions of stars in the galaxy called the Milky Way. There are eight planets that orbit the Sun. These are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. The Earth is millions of miles away from the Sun and much smaller than the Sun. The Earth orbits, or moves around, the Sun. The time it takes the Earth to orbit the Sun is called a year. The Earth takes 365 ¼ days to make one complete orbit, so a year is normally 365 days.

THE EARTH AND SUN: In addition to rotating around the Sun, the Earth rotates on its axis. It takes the Earth 24 hours to spin around its axis once. We call this a day. As the Earth spins, half of it faces the sun and half of it doesn’t. When part of the Earth doesn’t face the Sun it is night there. The Earth is warm because of the Sun. The Sun is a ball of gases. It is responsible for energy and it gives us light and heat. Plants and animals need sunlight. Plants make food and oxygen from the sunlight through a process called photosynthesis. All living things need oxygen to breathe.

THE MOON: The Moon is the Earth’s natural satellite and nearest neighbor. It is a sphere. It is made of rocks and has many craters. There are no plants or animals on the Moon as there is no oxygen. The Moon takes 28 days to orbit the Earth. This is called a lunar month.
