“Sustainable tourism in Morocco is a long-term project, a clear wager for the future”, states Es-said Kasmi, the Director of the Moroccan Na-tional Tourism Offi ce in Spain. Estas nuevas formas de crecimiento y explo-tación de la industria turística alcanzan su máxima expresión en complejos implantados en los parques naturales del país, como el de Terres D’Amanar, en la vecindad del Parque Nacional de Tubqal, colgado en las primeras estribaciones del Alto Atlas. El emprendi-miento hace buenas todas las características que se le puede pedir a un lugar sostenible: gestión de recursos naturales, reducción de las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero, ahorro de agua y electricidad, uso de paneles solares para generar energía y, sobre todo, la preservación del modo de vida beréber del

These new ways to help the tourism industry develop and operate achieve their maximum expression in the complexes set up in the country’s natural parks, as at Terres D’Amanar, close to the Toubkal Natural Park, nestling in the fi rst foothills of the Upper Atlas. The ven-ture has come good on all the features that can be demanded of a sustainable location: respect for natural resources, abatement of greenhouse gas emissions, savings in water and electricity, the use of solar panels to gen-erate power and, above all, the conservation of the Berber lifestyle, which visitors are invited to share.

Advised by both local and foreign profession-als, the Moroccan authorities have incorpo-rated the concept that the most conventional ways of enjoying a country, namely sun and beach tourism, active tourism, urban tourism, and particularly nature tourism, can and must be sustainable. And the idea extends through the 3,500 kilometres of coastline hiding some of the true secrets of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic; in the Rif and the Atlas mountains; and the unending sweep of the desert.Figures from recent years support these ac-tions. Las cifras de los últimos años avalan estas actuaciones. El turismo representa en la actualidad el 8% del PIB del país, en comparación con el 6% a principios de la déca-da. Y el número de visitantes pasó de los 4,4 millones en 2001 a casi 9,3 millones en 2010, lo que representa un crecimiento anual medio del 8,7%, muy por encima de la media mundial. Otro de los grandes polos del turismo sostenible aguarda al norte, a las puertas de Chefchauén: es el Parque Nacional de Talassemtane, último refugio marroquí de los pinsapares, los macacos o el águila real. Donde además es posible vivir de cerca la realidad de los jbalas, “la gente de la montaña”, unas 25.000 personas que se distinguen por su forma de vestir, sus peculiaridades lingüísticas, sus técnicas constructivas o sus prácticas agrarias, y que habitan un parque que atesora un importante patrimonio histórico y religioso.
